Title: Cap substitution
Post by: ddj3891 on May 17, 2019, 12:38:14 PM
The muddbunny civil war calls for 430p caps.  The suppliers I use don't carry that.  Can I substitute that with another value without compromising the circuit?
The only resource that I know has them is mouser, but they have so many options I always end up getting weird sized caps because I don't know all the details to match what I'd get from mammoth or small bear.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks.

390pF or 470pF would work fine. Orange drop ceramic caps (which is mostly what EHX used at the time) tend to have high tolerances (20%) so their "430pF" caps could have been anywhere between 344pF and 516pF, if not even more out of the box.

If you are feeling neurotic, buy a handfull and meter them to find the closest to 430. Or just use a close value and know its likely as close as anything used in the actual construction.

EHX used whatever they could get their hands on that was cheap, back in the day.

You'll be fine.
