Title: Hey kids, you ever seen a real Muff up close before?
Post by: TheDude on January 13, 2020, 02:07:56 PM
Got a pair of Big Muffs to share today, courtesy of Bean's Mudbunny and Pigbutt boards. First up we have the Mudbunny Mayo. Had to get some help on my Green Russian post to realize these BC550s need to be placed in reverse. The volume was almost non-existent until I flipped, and boy, this baby is beautiful. Hits those Siamese Dream tones wonderfully. Bit brighter and a touch clearer than the Green Russian. Excellent. Enclosure is a simple cream with brownish graphics and oxblood knobs, with the goal of hinting at that very Siamese Dream album. Clearly I wasn't prepared to put on knobs this big, but such is life.

Secondly comes the Pigbutt OpAmp Muff. Graphically just took a simplistic spin on EHX's reissued version, nothing to write home about. Once again, this puppy rocks. In my opinion by far the most versatile version of the Muff with Bean's boards thanks to that treble switch. Easy to dial in those Smashing Pumpkins tones, but you can also bring in some pretty dark and gritty tones that work magically for a lot of stoner rock. This is the Muff I'm currently rocking on my board, and will likely be the one to stay on.

Knob's too big for the Muff, eh?
..wish I had that problem.

Nice clean layouts & font choices!

Thanks Jimi! If I'm being honest, I've become a little obsessed with muffs since my first one [emoji23] Hoping to get my hands on a few more of the '15 boards to build the other 4 variations. Love that layout. And who doesn't love swimming in Muffs?

Those are some great builds. The Mayo has that swanky 70s thing going on, and the IC Muff is wonderfully straightforward.

The P19 is possibly the smoothest and one of my favs to date. The green Russian is a great one for bass.

I hadn't heard of the P19 til now but you're absolutely right, that's impressively smooth. I love my Green Russian too. That honestly could beat out the OpAmp muff for my desert/stoner rock board with how well it handles lowered tunings.

me too!

Muff is pedal that started my journey. Being addict in muff make me hand draw layout in my free time on job. Even draw for quad array. And always have switchable tone caps is must for me, although still favorite scooped 3n9. Dont care if use spdt or dpdt on-off-on, use whatever in my stock. Because dpdt on-on-on became rare here.

My favorite? Tri Dirty Booster. Still in plastic box in my office desk. Hahaha. Never sell that although some friend want to pay. They cant buy my eureka pedal.

I'm with you. The green Russian is my eureka pedal. One of the many I have has a tone filter so I can switch between guitar and bass.  I've sold so many pedals and then built them back again, it's crazy.

I like the creamy color of the mayo. Never heard a opamp muff, sooner or later I will build one.

My muff is a blend between green russian and ram's head, with germanium diodes on the third stage, and a less scooped tone control.
I use it with bass, it's a doom machine.

Fun fact:
The day when I discovered the second (or first) meaning of the word MUFF...
I was looking on google image for some ideas... I started from fuzz... muff fuzz, fuzzy muff, wool... wooly muff, nothing intresting... wool is a form of hair... tried hairy muff. DON'T DO THIS! :o

I'm with Jimi on the Green Russian myself. I started building to get my hands on a Zvex wooly mammoth for far less than those suckers go for, but once I built the Green Russian, hoo boy. It was over.

That Tri Dirty Booster is pretty gnarly.

Hahahahaha, I'm glad I'd heard of the word before trying that. I don't know where Mike Matthews got the idea to call his pedal a Muff though. Gnarly fuzzed out guitars and muffs don't really seem to come together in my mind. But hey to each their own.

I definitely recommend trying out the OpAmp muff. I think it has the most unique flavor in terms of the distortion itself, as opposed to the others which seem to vary more specifically in tone. I'd love to see the values you put into your muff though! Sounds like it could be a fantastic variation for that stoner/desert rock sound I'm working for.

I have! I actually built a JMK 5-Knob fuzz, though I haven't been able to wrangle it in beyond a few specific settings. I was able to get a fantastic In-a-gadda-da-vida out of it though. Beyond that it came out a bit shrill and/or glitchy for my tastes in most settings. Granted, this was the second pedal I'd built, so it may be time to revisit this one, maybe even try out some new transistors in it.

It's fun, but I haven't found it a lot useful for my taste. Catch some youtube vids on it, it can do a lot of stuff.
