Title: Let's make suggestions on the next Giveaway
Post by: madbean on February 10, 2021, 02:59:56 AM
I have one in mind that I already designed and verified last year, but I wouldn't mind hearing suggestions to generate ideas I might not consider otherwise!

Caveat:
It needs to fit in a 1590A or B.
Not too complicated - no analog delays or choruses, etc. It needs to be something straightforward and easy to build with no esoteric parts.

I'd like to do the next Giveaway in March or April so if we start now there's plenty of time.

An analog octave up or ring modulator.

Dual buffer or dual boost...one can be use before and the other after the chain or a pedal.

I think you should do your own version of a Deluxe Bazz Fuss and call it the Super Bad Mean

Vorg Warp or Analog Bit Crusher?

I'd vote A Green Ringer

A simple bass/mid/treble tonestack with a single opamp to make up any gain lost.

Rump Roast or Bacon Bits reissues.

Something like a bit crusher or the crash sync would be pretty cool. I am always game for a good ring mod too. Although the only one I can think of that is small enough is the Escobedo one and it's hard to get the right IC in through hole.

Color me boring but....

What about a JFET test rig? Something that could be used to match JFETs for a Phase AND.... for Idss, etc. Something slick and useful in Madbean fashion.

This way when the many questions about JFETs are posted, anyone can point to the project and say "Build this and ye shall find the way!"  ;D

I'd like a board that lets me add a clean blend to any pedal.

Or, perhaps a cocked wah.

Will it fit in a 1590b? See, I'm planning a multi and I need something small to fit in there.

Well, there are definitely more DOD projects coming including some of the stereo ones (I already have one ready to prototype). But, like I said the Giveaway boards need to be more on the beginner to intermediate level builds.

I'm digging the fixed Wah idea (actually something I had been thinking about). I'd like to put a Wah in a 1590B with expression pedal input option. But, there's a problem with trying to make an expression pedal pot simulate the "ICAR" taper in a Wah.

Distorque Pitch Incinerator. I'm surprised how rarely people build this circuit considering how unique and awesome it sounds.

I would also be excited for a simple ring mod and I happen to have a friend's borrowed moog ring mod open today, so here are some pics to show the complexity level for those who may not have seen one.

That would be useful. I also use these standalone hpf and lpf alot. It does use a 100kA dual gang pot but I don't think those aren't too difficult to find

I recently built a Korg MS-20 VCF on vero that's powered by +9v and has a low parts count. Great LPF, neat resonant frequency. Not exactly a cocked wah, but in a similar vein...

The aforementioned Vorg Warp is basically a cocked wah/fuzz hybrid.

Another vote for some sort of filter. I'd find a Baxandall or HPF/LPF combo more useful than a cocked wah, personally.

Or, a no-knob HM-2 with everything set to max (...maybe add a volume knob).

I could be wrong but the Boss FA-1 seems like it could fit and isnt often cloned and has a nice tonestack. Couldnt find a 3volt (maestro? dizzytone?) fuzz at any regular PCB shop either.  Maybe a switchable Jawari/Bronx Cheer? Love both circuits and that way it's only one transformer. Maybe the Jen Modulator, that's kinda bitcrushy from some comments.

My vote would be for the mini wah with exp input if there was a workaround for the taper.

I would like to see a fz-1a fuzz in a silicon version, could simulate leakage with resistors. Wouldn't mind it in a 1590g or 125b either, small box and big feet is a bad combo

I like the FA-1 idea a lot. I was also thinking maybe the ChunkChunk TMB tone stack with a FET pre-amp in front of it might me cool. The Boss may have a slight advantage being active cut/boost though.

I really like this idea. We all love fuzz and overdrives but maybe something like this would help other people discover other fx they like to build!

My other thought is maybe a stripped down version of the Cave Dweller. Maybe a fixed level and tone and just have the time and fdbk as pots.

So, I'm not against having a FET tester. I've had a board for it for ages and just never released it. But, not as a giveaway. Specifically b/c the Giveaways do need to generate some sales and frankly I think it's a better deal for customers to get a project I might release for $5-$9 instead of one I might charge 50 cents for. KnowwhatImean? But certainly, I can just run that JFET panel on the next go.

Anyway, here are two I worked up over the last week. I'm still looking at your guys suggestions so these are just in process. I'll work on some more of your suggestions next week.

The Fireaxe is the FA-1. I added one extra switch for soft clipping option similar to what I think the Retrosonic version does. The ChaosAgent is something I wanted to try - a FuzzFactory but designed for any NPN silicon transistors :) I checked it all out on the breadboard and it gets close to the real thing. Maybe not 100% but still fun to play around with. I did that one as a VFE style knob layout.

I'm definitely down for a Fuzz Factory minus the ripping velcro emulation especially with that knob config... good choice

How about a single-channel Mysterioso?

I really like how "Setting 1" works and sounds but rarely have any use for "Setting 2."  Personally, the buffer doesn't get much use from me and I don't ever turn the tone control off, so I wouldn't miss those 2 toggle switches either.

I really dug Thomasha's Ultra-Flanger build, if it can fit in an LB, the 1590A should be a doddle.  ;D

I've seen the vero, it's not small. Or easy, I imagine...

Low parts count, 1590A:
MANGAVYBE — a MadBean improved version of the MagnaVibe
Japanese for Vibe: 雰囲気 Fun'iki (Manga Fun'iki マンガ 雰囲気) — I Google-translated them separately.

Translated together "Manga Vibe" came out as マンガバイブ — Mangabaibu.

Took delivery on 10 (or 11?) prototype boards last week and I am working my way through them. So far having good success.

The Chaos Agent (NPN Si Fuzz Factory) is perfect as designed. The Fireaxe (Boss FA-1) also worked out great. I ended up liking so much I decided to go a bit further. So, now it will include an output volume pot when using it as a low gain OD (it sounds super good).

just populated the board yesterday, for my first smd i managed to get it tacked on without my scope and finished it under the scope so it would be clean and secure.
filled the through hole so i wouldn't make a mistake later.

I've made the mistake on my second SB V3 board of putting a resistor on one side into the wrong through hole, so figured to keep myself from doing it twice...
Also forgot it was a SMD part when I finished. XD

Mine too, my glasses do not cut it and they have been a little off when focusing since I got them.
Mild Astigmatism, but it doesn't help when the optometrist rushes you on those slides.

I have to recommend the one I have, it's a little iffy, but runs on a 18650 and can be used connected to a pc without the battery.
Just don't add the battery back in while it's on and in pc mode. It locked up on me. XD

Not sure if we're still crowdsourcing suggestions but has there ever been a Bean Ampeg Scrambler board? Just off the back of octave fuzzes it doesn't seem common in the wild but may have missed it. Or maybe a Devi Ever mashup with a couple of switches you could have a 3/4 in one with flipping some transistors. Big fan of the Jen HF modulator too, that might fit in a 1590A.
