Title: What is everyone doing????
Post by: jimilee on January 09, 2022, 12:27:02 AM
I've never seen this place this empty. Where is everyone at, building?

It's been like that for a while Jimi. Myself I'm just getting back into building after a hiatus during the holidays. I'm getting ready to take on some builds in the coming weeks. But first I had to clean my bench. After cleaning and reorganizing I'm ready to tackle Brian's new projects. I also got a new guitar so I'm trying to get in time to play, on top of work, family and general adulting [emoji51](https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220109/3c124b033a4ceb5b7e5f28e48dbb202b.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220109/149ad1c0272f387597cce890b72eb42d.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220109/04bb71e8443ca1d3c8bb16896c8b69b3.jpg)

I'm hardly building these days but still lurking around here while on baby duty. Otherwise I'm renovating the bathroom in my house, trying to squeeze in some guitar playing, or playing video games after everyone is asleep

I want that SG!!!

Business as usual for me.  I've been binge building since the beginning of the pandemic and I'm up to my eyeballs in pedals.  I've been selling a bunch of stuff thru my pal's music store but sporadic and not coming even close to breaking even.  Still, building is therapy for me and every now and then (Fuzzy Britches and Archibald) something comes down the pike that is absolutely killer and stays on my board.

I will agree, l want that guitar also. Since I figured out eagle, I've been covered up in boards and builds as well, it's like a feeding frenzy.

And...
Its been slow for a while, but I t hasn't been this dead. When I posted this, there were literally 2 posts all day. I've been working on homework and building in between brief breaks. One more year to go starting in March and I'll have my bachelors....at 51 and 1/2.

I know you were talking before about an SG special you liked at Chicago music exchange. Well if you like that red SG then this picture should really get your blood boiling lol after years of Les Pauls I realized that I'm really an SG guy. No turning back for me. You nailed it, Gordo.  I think I built 100 pedals during this pandemic.  After things opened up a little bit, it's been nice to enjoy some other things.  I finally dove into Eagle last year too, Jimi. I'm hoping to do some more of that soon.

I have some more boxed up, gotta take photos and will post tomorrow. Which is today at yours. Or so. Because of time zone, date line and time confusion and so on.
Whtaever, it'll come when it comes.

December January, as well as being stinkingly hot summertime, is also the busiest time of year at work.

Mind you, ever since the pandemic started, the slaughterhouse has been going pretty dang constant.

I've got a few projects that are at the "need a Mouser order", I just really, really do not want to deal with putting an order together with Mouser's website. I've also been getting back into World of Warcraft Classic BC.

I've ended up working on eurorack synth stuff for most of 2020, so only got one pedal build done.

And playing way too much Civilisation 6 recently, that chews up the hours!

I think it may be some sort of reverse snowball effect, if that's a thing..  I used to post here more, but the truth is I really don't have anything amazing to say or show to you guys so when it's super slow I don't want to be the ONLY guy who posted something in a whole day.  My mediocre build reports and dumbass comments need to be sandwiched between fancier content that just isn't flowing like it used to..

I really wanted to participate in the BOTY here but all I actually completed last year was a massive multi-box so I wasn't qualified to enter and I didn't see the rules in time to complete another submission (HA!)

Maybe I'll do a report for one of my mediocre builds this week- just to contribute some content.

It is very satisfying. At times, I wonder why I'm doing this, but this motivates me to finish what I've started.

I dove into the whole DIY hobby deeply when I started and kept that going for 4-5 years, but then it just faded (also with some other names retreating from the hobby content got less frequent). Frankly, I've never been much of a guitar player and did it more for the building part. These days I do one or two custom pedals occasionally for friends that actually want to play the effects.
Other than that, I have been busy with work, also ramped up my climbing activities (as far as lockdowns let you do this) and also have been playing wayyyyy too much Destiny 2 over the last year on playstation  ::)

But yes, I still lurk around and I have to agree with Jimi. The activity on the forum has gone way down over the last years (despite pandemic lockdowns in winter would be the best to pick time up this hobby).

Brian, did you also see a decrease in business, or is this just the forum? (No need to answer if you don't want to disclose that info, just curious)

I don't have time to really delve into playing like I want right now. After I graduate, I'm digging in there. I still play, but not much. I can sneak in a little time to play and build occasionally.

Is that one of the newer '61s? Missed a couple opportunities in the last few months to get one at a really good price but I've committed to selling a couple guitars before buying a third SG. I'm trying to keep my total guitar count to 5 but I'm already +1, haha.

Jimi, it's awesome that you are going back to school. Good for you. I know from experience that being the older person in a B.S. program is a little weird. I finished my Math degree in my early thirties. In hindsight I wasn't that much older, but I already had kids and a decent amount of responsibility, so it felt weird to be in school with a bunch of people who were basically still teenagers.

Haha, yeah I'm there with you In my mind I have about five, but yesterday I remember one that I haven't played in a while and then my wife mentioned another that I had completely forgotten about. Who knows I may have another ten I don't even know about anymore.

Generally I only keep one out at a time and rotate them every week it two. It helps keep the creative sparks flying.

It is Brian, the new standard 61. Sounds and plays excellent. I sold a Les Paul tribute to get it and so glad I did. I'm set now on guitars, all bases covered including bass, my p-bass. Not pictured is my martin acoustic, that stays in the case. (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220110/c49f877f5a618cc3071553b2f15730b6.jpg)

Oh yeah, I know. Asking a bunch of irrelevant questions, overthinking things. Was I that way in my first year? I took some time off after my first year, it was a little overwhelming. Shock to the system I suppose.

I'm not bragging, but I have just too damn many. How do you decide what to sell? It's like selling my kids. I mean I'm sure I could sell the oldest boy, but the rest...

I had twenty at one time about 8 years ago . Had a massive sell of. I sold everything that didn't get played. I decided after that that anything I had was something that Inspired me to play and actually got used.all my guitars serve a purpose, they sound unique and get played. There's Paul I sold never got played so off it went. I decided after the sell off that for one to come in one had to go too. I hate feeling like a collector or hoarder.

Buying (usually spares/repair) vintage computers, consoles, CRTs and the like, then fixing them up. Cleggy and I have come up with video mods and stuff like that for old Ataris. Far less of a DIY scene there though, so even though we've documented it all, very few people have picked them up and used them. Still we get a load of stuff sent our way to do it for them.

For quite some time now we've been working through a guy's collection of super obscure old kit and making it work. Lots of bespoke mods required to get some of this stuff working with modern kit. Which has been fun.

I'm not really doing a lot.  I've turned my focus towards building some of my model stash and I've messed around with the little TPA amp boards you can get off ebay and the like but I've only completed two builds this year as I'd decided to take a break from it.  I've been working on my cover band since getting my Player Strat, so there's that.  Didn't have anything of standard to put into the BOTY comp.

I ask myself everyday, what am i doing? Old age and lack of sleep for the last 25 years is really setting in....

I was working on this killer multi pedal build for the BOTY but thems damn rules sidelined me, hahahha but now I am finishing it up to do a video series with it.

Other than that it is paint, play, film, edit and try to come up with good ideas for the DIY videos. Same shit as always just less time to post everywhere.

Playing a whole lot of guitar, but hardly ever grab a pedal that isn't already on my board. Building rack gear and microphones but that requires a significant investment in time, money, and space, so I don't take it nearly as lightly as I did building guitar pedals.

last year was rough, all work an no fun. I also had to finish my dissertation...it took a lot of time.
But this year I hope I can build more stuff, lets see. Last year I had a lot of Ideas an no time. It has been centuries since my last subminiature amp.

A lot of my favorite forum members stopped being active in the forum. Kind of a bummer but I understand.

I remember how awesome things were when I first joined and then slowly but surely, people started fading away.

I guess the lifespan of a pedal builder is relatively short. Once a person feels they have built everything they could possibly ever want, they get bored and move on.

That said, I'm still excited about building and have been playing a ton of guitar.

I feel the same. I have the passion even if I don't always have the time. The big thing for me is that there wasn't alot of projects that were exciting or excited me. Brian has been on fire since summer.

What SG do you have besides the SGJ?

This is my main squeeze right now, which is a 2003 Standard (and I also have a ebony 2018 Standard). I think I'm actually going to sell the 2018.

All the best,

I'm in the SG club too... Mine is a 2005 Standard in Natural Burst. The mid-2000's had the thicker 50's necks that I very much prefer over the thin 60's profile that everything else seems to have.

Nice one, those are not so common.
Any love for SG juniors? I would love to have one with the dogear P90s, but they seem to be out of stock everywhere in the EU.

Well, that and some convincing, cause my wife knows I already have a SG shaped guitar...

I had an SG for a little bit. I sold it tho. I probably owned the wrong kind, as mine had a pair of P90s in it, and I didn't dig the sound. I'm in for the classic Singles or Doubles, but don't get along with any Hum.

I've got an epiphone sg that I'm storing for a cousin. Haven't dug into it yet.

What SG do you have besides the SGJ?

I bought a used 2016 SG Standard w P90's about three years ago. It's basically the perfect guitar for me. With 11's is just slays. Only maybe to be surpassed by a '61 w/ humbuckers at a future time, haha.

I was going to post what's been going on with me, but I don't own an SG, so I don't think I qualify for this thread.  ;-)

Maybe I'll have to buy culturejam's.

I do think it's fair to say that the question "what is everyone doing" is answered.

Looking and drooling at SG's.

I have an SG faded I got from Curtis. Dropped some hand wound by Timbo ,Pearly gates in there. I'd love to have a P90 SG or Les Paul. Going to Nashville in March, maybe grab one then.

This is a fact Stephan. I was constantly struggling to find a Gibson style guitar that I liked anymore. Most Les Pauls and 335s are either to heavy, or to dark and muddy sounding to me. The other thing is that most Gibson guitars look outdated and gaudy with flame mapled sunburst. They look like something a lawyer or doctor wearing khakis and a sweater wrapped around their neck would play. The SG looks modern and sexy. They are snappier and brighter and the Gibson that I can really get on with.

That's certainly what I'm doing at the moment.  ;-)

I've never been able to find an SG I could play in tune.  I have a bit of a death grip on the neck and even playing 11's I always have intonation issues on skinny neck guitars.  Good to know the 2000's were the chunkier neck.

I bought an SG for my brother-in-law once so I guess I can chime in.

I'm still building. It runs in real large peaks and valleys but I still enjoy it. My wife can't figure out to save her life why I still build pedals. Can't say I blame her. But I wonder why she keeps buying new yoga pants she doesn't need so I guess we are even  8) When I retire, in 3 or so years, I'll probably go to building a bunch of amps I don't need too. I've got this notion to volunteer for free at some luthier shop somewhere to learn to build an acoustic. I'll string guitars, clean the place etc.. and they can show me how to build. That probably won't happen but it is a notion I have.

My silence is directly proportional to my industry: I'm about to move to a place with no logical bench space, so I've built something like 25 pedals (!) in the last month. Plan to finish my last one (the GGG Maestro Ring Mod) tomorrow or Thursday & post a few faves here in the coming weeks.

I've been in a lull for the last 9 months it so.  I did finish a Partscaster (tele) last fall that I should post on here.  I also have several half built pedals and an amp in the works but I can't find the time/energy to finish them.  On top of that, we just put an offer in on a home so I'm most likely going to be working on DIY projects of another kind for the foreseeable future.

Here's my 2008 SG Classic w/ chunky neck:
