Title: '71 Camaro Z28 OCD
Post by: k.rock! on February 05, 2012, 12:30:18 AM
Hey guys! It's been a while since I've been around...I've missed ya'll!  :D haha

So, this is probably the most special pedal I've built so far. My Dad used to have a '71 Camaro Z28 in gold with black stripes and he's been dreaming about having one back for years...

Recently he picked up his electric guitar again and I wanted to motivate him so I built him this modified OCD. I used Brian's clip mod except I went with asymetrical clipping. Sounds very tube-like! Also, I installed a second level knob to control the HP and LP volume independently. I retained the stock resistor values to keep the same tone and basically added the second pot into a 4PDT switch.

Component wise, I used the same recipe I've posted around a couple times which to me is a killer combo! Starting with the BAT41 clipper.

Now, probably the coolest thing about this pedal is the LEDs. I wired them so that when you step on the Ignition, it turns ON both LEDs and the sound is LP by default. When you step into the Overdrive it will light up the high beams and go into HP mode!  8) Gotta say, I'm pretty proud of the outcome...It sounds amazing and it's a killer versatile pedal!

The guts are not my cleanest work, but the fact it fired up the first time made it all good :P

Here are some pics, hope you guys like them!:

Awesome build! I wish my dad was still around so I could show him something like that! And about the guts: if it works, it's fine! Only people on this forum want to see that stuff, your dad probably doesn't care. Love the car theme, with the headlights and all... Great work!

Very cool...  8)
Nice that you have music in common with your dad!  I feel like the odd one out in my family

Thanks guys! I just gave it to my dad and he loved it!!

and yeah, he didn't mind the guts haha...I just don't like to build messy stuff! But the flip side is that it is very quiet. I was very aware of every power signal throughout the pedal so every 9V line has a ground wire twisted with it and routed away from audio lines. Heck even the output wire is twisted with a ground wire just in case haha He's also an engineer so if anything goes wrong with it I know he can take care of it :P

well thanks for the comments guys! I just love to share this kind of stuff with you all.

That's cool.  I like the hi beam/low beam option.  That's not a '68 Camaro, though ;)

You are absolutely right! Haha My Dad had a 71 Camaro...not a 68... Thanks for the correction man!

Awesome job! Outstanding. But dude, MESSY?? Are you kidding? Pffft. My first build is a rat's nest. Also, I own an OCD and I don't use it anymore- a love/hate but I might look into building one w mods like you have done and sell the OCD.

thanks guys!!

Haha yeah man! I think it was kinda messy! Granted the mods required quite a few wires, but still, it's just one of those things you know you could've done better...Specially with all the amazing talent around in this forum! One feels like we need to keep up! haha

Anyways, give your OCD another try man! I recommend starting with the clipping diode...change it to a BAT41 and you'll notice a change almost immediately. Also try changing cap types. I've posted the combo I've used on my builds and I love it. People like it a lot when they hear it! Search for White Rhino on the forum :)

I own an actual FT OCD, not a clone- you mean mod it?

Oh somehow miss-read your post :p

I thought u had a MB OCD. If u wanna mod it, sure, go for it! If not maybe just get an egodriver and mod the heck out of it and make it your own :)

Ya, honestly I'd be happy to mod the one I have- although -maybe- I could sell it and get enough money to cover cost of building my own which would be more satisfying in the long run. I wonder if I could adapt/apply mods listed here to the FT OCD- any thoughts?
thx

Awesome Kaleb!! The finish is soo good.  What a rad gift.

You should show Fu Manchu, they'd be all over it!

haha thanks Magic! that cover looks awesome...

@Om_Audio: Man, if you're not too wild about the sound of your original OCD, then you might as well sell it and build your own and shape it to the sound you're looking for :)

Hey Kaleb, where you been, mang?

I dig your pedal.  I used to have a stock 70 camaro with 300HP that had pretty much the same body style.  Loved that car.

Thanks Kaleb. I feel like =maybe= if I had a big Fender Twin or something I might love it- as it stands it is def love/hate and I really don't use it- so I will prob do as you suggest- I'd much rather build my own. Thx.

Hey man! I've been busy at work and playing a lot lately, so I had to put pedalbuilding in pause, and MBP went wiith it too =\ ... But the work load is less now and I can check in now every once in a while =P

On another note, I'm jealous of u and your Camaro...I'm sure it was a sweet ride...I also dream to have one in gloss black...heck, any color would do haha

Haha, yeah mine was chevy blue.  It looked very much like this one but it wasn't an SS.

I thought that body style was the best, and they only made it for 2 years I think.  :(

Jacob

The outside of the car honestly looked about that good and I had those same wheels.  It really was a badass especially right after a tune up.  The interior needed work though.  But it had heat and AC, a tape deck with decent speakers, and it came with an ashtray which was important to me in those days.  I do miss it- and it was fun to drive- but I don't think I would like putting gas in it now.
