Title: Sultinizer
Post by: juansolo on April 09, 2013, 01:22:53 AM
Sultinizer

An idea we had a while ago and were beaten to by CJ here (http://www.madbeanpedals.com/forum/index.php?topic=8566.0). Anyone who's ever listened to Clutch will know what this sounds like. Tim Sult has a very unique superfast wah style, this pedal essentially does that without the effort. With the LFO switched out it operates as a cocked wah.

The boards used are both from Grind Customs. A modboard and Kwawk wah.

An interesting fit in a 1590B...

Excellent JS. Huge Clutch fan here as well. Maybe a demo if we are lucky?  :)

Never heard the band, but there's always extra points for getting multiple PCB's into a 1590b!

One day I want a beard as awesome as Neil Fallons:

...and while I'm on Clutch, this one is for the fans. They're just a bunch of guys and are obviously a bit uncomfortable with the whole interviewing thing, but this one is brilliant:

Saw the art and my eyes shot open. "Damn that's genius."

Then I read what it does. "Sweet jeebus, that's Effin brilliant!"

Been kicking around the idea of pairing a SWAH with a Green Russian, but this just might be way cooler.
As an aside, I've seen Clutch live more than any other band - six times. My friends and I were huge fans in the 90s & early 2000s - though Elephant Riders is the only album that still makes in my rotation these days.

This thing does sound great, but could be improved if anyone has an easy mod to the LFO circuit to make it more sawtooth like.  I think that would replicate Tim's wah technique better.

I've got one these to put together, it's not going in a 1590B!.

Easy:

A diode across the rate pot.

Depending on which way it faces, it ramps up or down.

You can put two on an on/off/on switch and have all three wave forms.

You can put them on a 500K pot and have the Tremulus Lune's Symmetry control.

The switch is just better for an auto wah, and it makes the control panel cleaner. Here's a demo of a kinda-sorta-similar optical auto wah (inductorless) with the ramp mod added:

I'll try the diode when I put mine together.

That is in fact a burly beard. Inguess I'm not surprised to hear he grew up in Washington state :)

I'll bring mine over today and we'll graft it on to try :)

That's a really cool pedal.  Very clever.

Well I added a diode as per Jons suggestion and I also opened up the RYO vactrol and pulled the LDR and LED apart so it was a lot more diffuse. It's really taken the harsh edge off it and made the wah action more natural.

Smashing!

1. that's an awesome idea... well played.
2. Clutch is the shit.  I just saw them a few weeks ago... epic.
3. you should film/record a demo of this...  :)

I love the graphics Juan! I love me some Clutch so I will definitely have to head over the Grind Customs and pick up a board...

That's an excellent idea, and my hat's off to you guys (Juan and Cleggy and CJ) for coming up with some actually interesting integrations of fun ideas. Really cool.

I'm trying to find the mod board, any links for that one?

Same here, looking for the mod board as well...

I'm starting to see the value of using this in anything to replace a pot...modulate the modulation rate or level!

Send grind a pm on the grind customs board, i'm sure he'll have some available.

Most excellent built as usual.

The mod board that Juan and Cleggy uses for these where part of some protos that i got made.

We had some little issues with them, mainly the Depth control pinout being inverted.

The new boards are on their way with the pot pinout corrected and also the pads for a Shape knob or SPDT switch.

Might actually make a dedicated PCB out of this, a cool and original effect.

Sorry for the thread derail.

If you do, it wants the diode on rate so it waaas rather than aaaws or aawwaawwaas. Also that perceived vol drop when you kick the LFO in could do with sorting.

We're going to sort it when we do Cleggy's as he's having it in a bigger box with two stomps. The second to toggle between cocked wah and LFO'd wah.

Cool!

Well, when you guys will have sorted it, post all the details in the «Product Devellopement» section @GCFX board  ;D

So we make it real and perfect :)

To compensate the output loss due to LFO, maybe just tweaking the buffer section of the KwawK so it have more output would fix it. Hopping up R16 to 56K should do it.

Yeah, we're going to switch that resistor on the cocked/LFO switch as when cocked it's a bit louder currently.

But yep, we'll post details when sorted :)
