No prob, looking forward to seeing what you make!

Yeah, sorry about that, here's the new pic, I also redid the design a bit so that 2 outputs are never tied together, which means no noise or tone sucking and also, you could use a 3pdt and a dpdt, instead of 2 3pdts. I hope I didn't miss anything :)
A bit of explanation:
State 1 or ST1 is when the bottom rows are connected, ST2 is when the top rows are connected. There are 2 OUT pins that need to be tied together at the jack. SW1 could be a dpdt, SW2 must be a 3pdt. It would probably be a good idea to add some pull-down resistors.
So basically SW2 determines wheter you are cascading or not, regardless of SW1 and SW1 determines which effect you are using in non-cascading mode.
Hope this helps :)

Ok, so I found this scheme on my phone, it should work in principle, but there could be a problem with some of the outputs, because they aren't disconnected when they should be, it could lead to noise or tone sucking or both. I never managed to test this circuit so I don't know. As an alternative solution you could use a microcontroller with relays, that's probably how I would do it. If you decide to go this way, let me know if you need some help, it's pretty simple to get this working :)

I think I had a similar idea and worked out the wiring, as I recall it could be done with a 3pdt toggle, but it was a long time ago, I'll try to find the scheme :)

Man I wish Id have the time for this, already have a few books on this topic that I want to get to :)

If you can make and tweak patches on the FV-1, you could do this blindfolded while having a fish sandwich and a cup of tea :)

Addy Bart, yes that is pretty much what I meant, that two parameters (which note and velocity) control which sample would get used. In my mind that is pretty much a must if you want to use some piano/rhodes sounds or you lose the nuances in playing.

sturgeo, I think it's really cool that you can have an idea and go from zero to finished in a couple of days and still have the capability to tweak and add stuff just by changing the code. And yes, the jack is for an external footswitch. My first idea was to use a Mega board and a ton of features, but the main problem was the enclosure, because I wanted slider pots, which cause a lot of problems when drilling. I'll probably get to it some day and use a 3D printer for the enclosure. Your project sounds really cool, I'd like to see that, when it's done!

Drolo, yes I did the programming myself, but am not done yet. Basically what the program does is it reads the pins and if there's a change in value it sends a message to the serial port (USB). At first I wanted to use the MIDI library, but it just didn't work. So I went and studied the standard MIDI documentation and used the commands described there for sending the messages. So if you know how to read inputs on an arduino you are one step away from making a controller like this :) I can send you the basic code with comments if you are interested. Thanks! Interesting idea, but I guess you'd have to load a bunch of layers of samples on it to get a nice velocity curve?

And it's yellow!
The keyboard player from my band started using VSTs for different synth and organ sounds, so I decided to make a MIDI controller to control the basic parameters such as volume, reverb etc. The original idea was to make a huge board with many pots and switches, but I decided to go for a simple version first, to see how it works. It's Arduino-based and I pretty much designed the circuit as the project progressed, I'm pretty happy overall. The top-right toggle is meant to be a bank switch, so you can control additional parameters with the pots and switches and the bottom switch is a weird momentary toggle that I bought accidentally, but thought it's pretty cool so it ended up on this thing.

cheers!

I think I got 2 CA3080s from Banzai about 2 years ago and 4 from ebay. The 4 from ebay worked and 1 of the 2 from Banzai didn't. I didn't bother sending it back though. So I guess you can get anything anywhere :)

I have the UMC-404HD and have been very happy with it so far. As you said for the price and features it is a very good value and the MIDAS preamps sound clean and quiet in my setup. I upgraded mainly so I could have 4 Inputs and 4 Outputs and wanted the option of having Instrument level inputs for direct Guitar and Bass input so I can reamp or use amp plugins, my previous interface only had line level/Mic inputs (my DI tracks to not sound right) and only stereo out. Now I am able to have my monitors running all the time and still have outputs to run signals to outboard gear like my Xamp to reamp my guitar DI tracks thru my amps. It also has inserts for the 4 inputs but at this point I am not using those.

What OS are you running? I got a warning from a guy at the local store that there were some driver stability problems etc. but didn't find much about that online, just that you need ASIO4ALL. I'll probably go for it and if won't play nice with my computer I'll make a return and look for something else.

I really wasn't looking at Focusrite stuff because it's more expensive than most stuff, but might reconsider.

Open Discussion / USB sound cards, what are you using?
February 08, 2017, 10:45:45 PM
I'm in the market for a USB sound card, looking to spend about 100€ and since a lot of people here have experience with recording I'm interested in what gear you are using and what to look out for. I know there must be a million forum threads all around the interwebz, but I'd like to get some input from people on here. The one that really caught my eye was a Behringer umc-404hd, it has 4 preamps and a lot of other goodies for 110€.
Any input on this would be great!

Cool stuff, enjoy your studies! I have to agree that this place is a pretty strong influence, I just couldn't stand not understanding the techy posts, and seeing how other people have such a clear idea of what's going on, led me to believe that this stuff is not some voodoo magic and thanks to the people here, I started studying EE as well.

This year I didnt do much building, so my first plan is to build more, finish Drolo's MDD for starters. I also want to learn more of C++ for building my own VSTs  and start working on an arduino-based MIDI controller. Id also like to learn some basics of DSP and signal manipulation. So pretty much plenty of programming, but I'll see how much DIY time there'll be with all the university and music school work I have.
