I love it .... the deco is quite beautifull.
Seeing this kind of DIY pedal is quite motivating to take a turn for the better .....

Build Reports / Re: Chunk chunk
July 12, 2011, 01:45:32 AM
Hello
for the pots, I've tried to show the idea in the picture attached. The red circles show where the 6 pots 16mm can be solded (but bottom side) .....
The PCB is 5cm x 5cm (roughtly 2inches x 2inches).
Seems to me the cheapest solution which removes a lot of wires (when the number of pots is high and pedal is noise sensitive, like in the Dr Boogey).
Good night (in France)

Bye

Build Reports / Chunk chunk
July 10, 2011, 09:51:34 PM
Hi guys
second time that I do the famous Dr Boogey .....
But even with shielding technics, not possible to have an acceptable noise at high volume ...
Therefore I've tried several transistors config even if it decreases slightly the disto.
Quickly, exit the mpf102, I've found it too much muddy (even when replacing just one J201). The sound is darker.
Then I've tried the 2N5457. From my opinion this is a good choice even if I prefer slightly the J201. In fact, it sounds differently to my ears.
- the noise strongly decrease  ;D.
- the gain remains at a high level even if not at the same high level than with the J201.
- The sound has a bit more bass, is "hoter"
- With the J201, the pedal sound is sharper ....

I would have prefered to keep the J201 to keep the sharp, but for the noise control it is from my opinion a requirement to use 2N5458. But it remains a quite good pedal even with this transistor.
To be noticed: I've changed the 2 first J201 (2 first stages) + output buffer, because I've found it gives a good balance in term of bass-treble.

I have had one regret with the PCB: it just misses 1mm between pots to be able to mount them straightly on the PCB (and saves a lot of wires). But this mm cannot be added (if it was, it could not be possible to use a 1590B enclosure). One good idea could be to have 2 different lines of 16mm pots across the PCB, solded back side (I've already done that for a 5cm = 2 inches PCB).

Thanks

ouawww. perfect wiring and finishing is impressing ....
Do you feel it sounds like in the video from JakeFuzz ?
(probably one of my next build but I've before another project).

I would like to build 2 Sunking in one pedal. Is someone tried one to boost the other ? Does it make sense from your opinion ?

Thanks

Build Reports / Re: road rage
June 20, 2011, 04:04:38 PM
Hello,
I'm not sure 100% but if I remember well I've bought enclosure (plastic still better to manage different supplies) + DC jacks here:

http://www.banzaimusic.com/Hammond-1594ASGY.html
http://www.banzaimusic.com/Lumberg-PSU-1614-09.html

this 9V DC jack is quite interesting for people who dont want a 9V battery in pedals ... It saves room (drilling is diameter 8, and this plug is shorter that the one we all use)

A good shop for europeen people.

Yes effectivelly I could add easilly a 15V between the 2 9V jacks in front of the pedal (but I had not the accurate regulator :-( and I was not sure that it could be usefull for me). Perheaps an update one day ....

Thank you guys for all your encouraging message !

Hello
easy to do .... but quite usefull !
2 road rage in a little box in order to supply easilly pedals.
In fact I dit it initially to test the voltage supply effect of a little preamp named duoclean I've built recently (scheme on well known french site).

See you soon

Audio/Video Demos / Re: Boneyard
June 04, 2011, 10:54:27 PM
hello
effectivelly the demo doesn't sound like a plexitone (I have it). Even if the sound of this demo remains good and the boneyard seems really dynamic....
The youtube demo is exactly how the plexitone sounds and to be honest, I've never found before a pedal like this ....

beautiful finishing of the enclosure, and .... as usual I find your wiring perfect.
What do you think about the effect itself ?

Build Reports / kokbox and darkside
May 17, 2011, 10:47:43 PM
Hello
my new pedal: a darkside + kokbox in the same enclosure. Photos attached.
The idea was to have a box with a high depth for the rear of my pedalboard, and use this depth to enclose 2 circuits.
For the darside, I've replace the standard SUS pot by a 500K + 1nF as noticed in the madbean pdf. Concernig diodes used: BAT41. I've tried a lot of diodes, and this is by far the best choice from my opinion.
For the kokbox, no specific mod.
Based on G-2 video, the sound of the darkside seems quite close. The overdrive/fuzz are effectivelly dark, I like.
The sound of the kokbox : a lot of disto, but I think this pedal is not fully for metal (even if you want to remove a lot of medium, it is not possible with this pedal). I like the sound of this pedal and mainly when the medium button is near 0. A pedal to try !

Mods / Re: Uproar: Alternate Switch Wiring
May 09, 2011, 02:03:41 AM
Hello sgmezei,
I dont know how much is dark your pedal (and if it is normal), my pedal is effectivelly "relativelly" dark when the gain is low - medium. When you increase the distortion, highs increase (in my mind this pedal is not for low gain). At the beginning, I had found that the gain of my pedal was a bit lower compared to gain in internet videos (therefore probably more darkness a large part of the gain range). therefore I have replaced the 100K pot (gain) by a 250K. I dont know exactly the differences between 100 vs 250K (I've not done some test), but it works for me. No darkness at all when high gain.
For the tone itself I've replaced the 10K by 100K (10K was not really efficient) as advised in this thread. The 100K works perfectly but with the disagreement that the volume (and partially the gain in the same way) decreases when you turn the tone pot in the counterclockwise. But no problem because the volume pot is efficient to correct this problem. Therefore even when you decrease the gain (means more darkness), you can play with the tone pot.
It works for me quite well.
For the ON/ON/ON and madbean scheme, it works. It doesn't change drastically the sound, but you can ear the difference (and even some tonal differences depending on the switch position). For me this mod is necessary if you want to be sure to ear some differences.

Ah just forgotten: "Suggested substitutes are 10n for C9 and 33n for C8", this is the values I used.

Thanks

yes painting is clearly really painfull.... Unhappilly I'm in france and shipping is expensive from this site. I have not find yet in europe an equivalent site (often just few basic colors exist and not for all enclosure :-( ).
thanks. Bye.

waow, your wiring looks quite good gtr2, I like! In the same way, your solder technic seems really mastered. For the method you use, this is roughtly what I do too.
I have had a look too to your other pedal (amphitrite, custom preamp, zombii, the foxx etc....). Simply impressing. Just a small question even if it is not the subject: how did you performed the painting of the sunking ?

thanks bigmufffuzzwizz for your feedback. The heat gun could be effectivelly interesting (and usefull for other things). If I can find one for a low price when I will order some components, I think I will try ...

Build Reports / Re: Aristocrat
May 03, 2011, 11:32:45 PM
Hello,
I've more played guitar with this pedal since my first post. Definitly this pedal is very good as it. Strangelly, I find that the best use is when I push at maximum the overdrive . It means that for the second part of the pedal: all switches activated for the maximum overdrive and 500K gain pot at maximum. The first part of the pedal is roughtly used like a boost (with a slight overdrive).
Activating the boost + overdrive provides a thick overdriven sound really pleasant which can be used typically for a Hard Rock solo. Playing blues rock and hard rock styles is really a pleasure with this pedal ....

I recommand this pedal !

Build Reports / Re: uproar ....

Hello guys
thanks for all your messages and feedbacks, quite encouraging.
Yes for sure this solder blob was not clean at all (coming from several trials I did which requested to sold wires to the ground) and no way to keep such a dirty thing inside: this has been fixed today. Additionaly in case of shock, mechanically, this solder blob could break.
"You can easily make the ground connections on the switch with clipped off component leads": yes this is too what I do in all my pedal: a good trick which seems to be commonly used.
This discussion is quite interesting because it is often difficult to perform a clean wiring when the enclosure is small (small is the challenge for our pedalboards :-)!). And I think that put in place mods make things more and more dirty ... (Typically here the on/on/on switch mod ....). Moreover the LED (with the 4K7 resistance) management is not the best in term of "internal look". Except the special PCB sold in different sites (to sold the 3PDT with the diode), do you have some tricks to make it clean ?
Thanks

Build Reports / uproar ....
May 02, 2011, 10:54:40 PM
Hello all,
my uproar is now finished, I'm quite happy: I love the sound of this pedal !!!
I attach the photos ....

In terms of mods compared to the madbean's documentation:
- First I have used a on/on/on switch for diodes selections.
cf http://www.madbeanpedals.com/forum/index.php?topic=1288.0
for the wiring diagramm (Madbean's scheme).
NB: I can hear a difference depending on the switch position...
- My impression with a 100K pot for the gain is that -compared to youtube videos-, I had not enought drive/disto. Then I've replace the 100K pot by a 250K
- The 10KC pt has been replaced by a 100K. This value allows a better control of the tone, but when the pot is turned counter clockwise, the volume decreases progressivelly. Increasing the volume is then required to compensate.

More news in the coming days/weeks (if necessary) ...
A bientot
