Open Discussion / Re: Where to find Drab/Army green enclosure?
« on: April 01, 2013, 09:47:02 PM »
Just a heads-up, Mammoth had run out of military green powder recently (last week or two) and it was going to be a while before they got more in.
So you might be better off looking for an alternative at PPP unless you can wait a while.

But maybe they got the powder in early! Good luck either way.

Build Reports / Say Wahhh

Acquired a Crybaby in a trade, but it just wasn't doing it for me. So I decided to make it into a v846 from a vero layout on FSB with a Freq pot in parallel with C4.

I got the faceplate from Rej (GrindCustoms). Big thanks to him for the service.

Demos (you can tell I'm still new to wahs):

First one is clean, second dirty, third clean with a low frequency peak, last dirty with a low freq.

Love the concentric pots. A Klone must be the perfect project for them.

I accidentally ordered two huge perfboards not too long ago, so I've been trying to use it here and there to get rid of it. How anybody does a perf layout larger than a fuzz or boost is beyond my comprehension.

It's not for the impatient, that's for sure. Hats off to Midwayfair for pulling off crazy 1590a perf designs.

Build Reports / Smoothie & Mini Fuzz

It's been a while since I've had any good builds to show off, but this week has been a building week.

First off, a Smoothie. I had it built for a couple weeks but hadn't matched the FETs. Yesterday I decided to go ahead and see what the difference was. It sounded good before but it sounds GREAT with a matched pair. The vibe mode is much more noticeable after.

This is my first 1590A. It's a Fuzz Face on vero. No bias control, but I used 16mm pots and 2n3904s. No mojo at all in this one, but it sounds just as good if not better than my BYOC Silicon Fuzz Face in half the size!

I was apprehensive about diving into the mini territory, but already I can tell more will be on their way. I had built the circuit up before with no intention of putting it into a 1590A. Last night I was bored and feeling masochistic, so I decided to try drilling the enclosure (without a template, just eyeballing it) and seeing how it went. Surprisingly I didn't have to trim any wires or anything. You would almost think I planned to put it in there!

This might be one of my favorite pedals. The label with that hammered paint looks killer.

This really is a monster build.

I actually had a problem similar to this the other day when I built up a Fuzz Face with 2n3904s. I tried a range of ceramic caps from 47p to 470p. Originally I had left it empty, and got squeal when it was wide open. 47p knocked it down a bit. 100p was almost there. 220p was perfect.

I would try to get a range and see which is best for you. It's one of those values it wouldn't hurt to socket.

Vox did a similar thing recently as well. Clearly everyone wants a piece of the multi-delay pie.

Has anybody tried a GR in tandem with an octave fuzz?
I can't help but be intrigued by the thought.

The Poindexter is absolutely crazy (in a good way) on bass. Probably the nastiest fuzz, but it really cuts through. I like it better on bass than guitar actually.

Of course you can't go wrong with a Green Russian Muff or a Woolly Mammoth/Sabertooth. Always good fuzzes. The Deadringer does pretty well on bass.

I don't recommend the Smallbear ribbon. It's just a little too thin and difficult to work with.
Grind Customs was selling some if I remember correctly.

I put mine in front of the switch (always on) and it hasn't given me any problems, so you might want to check something.

You've gotten these baby builds down to a science! Very clean builds, inside and out.

I don't know what I was expecting, but it wasn't that. Thanks for doing this.
