Synth sounds great, I always wanted one of these. I heard they are built like a tank as well. Your demo led me to your blog and I like your music.

Thanks a lot! Yeah, this synth is a good instrument: it feels solid, the playing touch is good and the sounds are pure gold. DX7 was really common synth back in the day, so it's still pretty easy to find and prices haven't gone up, yet. I suggest that you score one in mint condition now when they are still sold for peanuts. It's an investment with a significant hipster factor, so the value can only go up!

Lately I've been getting into synthesizers and here's my latest purchase: a Yamaha DX7 synth from the 80s. It's in almost perfect condition. Just few minor scratches here and there and one key has a slightly louder release noise. Yesterday I quickly recorded a little demo video showcasing the factory presets (with few minor tweaks). I was born in the early 80s and my fascination to these sounds is probably encoded to my genes: I love this synth!

Thanks for the kind words! I've been practicing quite a lot lately and finally my touch is getting better. I would like to be able to play some faster runs too.. so maybe I should spend my summer with a metronome and learn how to shred.

I love the way you do your demos. Excellent playing, too. I never would have considered building a Box of Rock without hearing this (also not a high-gain guy).

Also, I was wondering what happened to your blog. Now I know. Does that mean all your old stuff is unrecoverable? That's a bummer.

Thanks Jon! I do have backups on some of the old stuff (and I'm going to publish them at some point).. but all unfinished articles were lost. Well, there were only few so it wasn't such a big loss after all.

It's a decal. Well.. I don't have any gutshots on this one, because it looks like crap inside. A lot of messy wiring.. but it works!

Here's my Zvex Box of Rock Clone.  



I don't use distorted tones much, but this one works nicely with low gain settings too. I used a vero layout from Guitar FX Layouts -site. I had some problems with the decal and I had to use those white washers on the footswitches to prevent tearing and lifting. So the small text "...just a bunch of Super Hard-Ons" doesn't show completely.. well, I just have to live with it.
