Build Reports / Superfuzz
July 20, 2017, 04:21:54 AM
Simple superfuzz.  What a great sounding evil fuzz.  Pcb is from ukelectronics.de  On the documentation, they suggest BC548A transistors.  Very aggressive almost ring modulation sound.  Some others (Fuzzdog) suggest 2N5088 for maximum gain.  I ended up with a mix of 3 of each.

Very nice looking pedal!  I like the comic-book font on the controls.
Is that a smallbear enclosure?

Thanks.

The enclosure is from banzaimusic.com
Nice but it was pre-drilled and the holes for the input and ouput jack were too close from the top of the box and one of the jack socket cannot fit completely horizontally. It is cool looking anyway.

I like the idea of naming it after a Sonic Youth song. Looks great, too!

Yes.  At least, during the 90's both Thurston and Lee had a blue blox on their pedal board.  I don't know exactly when they were using them but when you hit a chord with this pedal  plus another dirt pedal on, it's just NOISE.

Build Reports / Screaming Skull (mxr blue box)
March 12, 2017, 06:41:30 AM
Finished my first attempt with a fuzzdog's PCB.  And it worked like a breeze.
The switch is for choosing one or two octave below and there is an added boost for getting more volume than the original.

I built it stock except for the IC i put a TL072 instead of the 5558, a lite bit less noisy but still plenty of fuzz and octave.  It's a great sounding pedal if you're into messy stuff.

Hi,
I had this project waiting for a while and i finally got the time to build it.
It is my first try for a two pedal in one enclosure and thanks to the madbean forum it worked without any problem.

So the Japanese twin is a maxon OD820 (with an nimbus aion pcb) and the british twin is a Colorsound overdriver (plasma aion pcb).
The PCBs are great, easy to solder.
The switch in the middle of the pedal let you chose wich effect goes first in the chain and both can be used as clean boost or overdrive (with a lot of drive for the overdriver), so you have a lot of sounds in the bag.
As always, my wiring is messy but it's not the worst i have done.  And there are extra holes on the side as i made them too close to the pcb at first... Anyway, i like it and here it is.

Build Reports / The Velvet Claw (Red Snapper)
April 20, 2016, 07:55:38 AM
Hi there, I noticed i didn't have any overdrive pedal and decided to build one.  I liked alot the red snapper demos so i chose this pedal.  I use the tagboard Fx layout and it do sound really nice. I re-used the 1776 pcb switch from an old project so it has been desoldered and it's a bit messy and my wiring still sucks.  I cannot cut those wires short...
Cool pedal and a usefull one with the bite and cut knobs you can dial alot of tones.  I like it :-)

It's so nice.  Looks like an old console, sure it has an "Albini loves analog" vibe to it.  Wow!

Open Discussion / Re: How do you guys feel about the Pod?
December 29, 2014, 01:14:13 PM
I never used my pod for live or practice with a band but i did all my home recordings with a pod 1 and then a pod 2 for some years.  I liked it a lot and the clean tones can be really great.  But the overdriven tones are sometimes less convincing and the pod don't always do great with stompboxes (it hates my rat and most of my fuzz pedals).  I have always found that there is a "veil" over the sound.  Since last year, I'm using tech 21 character series pedals (blonde, leeds and liverpool).  When you play, they have way more dynamics than the pod and they do great with other stompboxes.  There is no "veil" over the sound, it's indeed very dry.  It's not perfect though, i guess if you want the sound of a real amp you have to use a real amp.  But for me it's not always possible to use my amp to record (neighbors, sleeping kids etc...) But i prefer the tech 21 over the pod.
I also must add that in the software department, overloud makes great emulations : TH2 for guitar (amps and effects) mark studio for bass and a Fantastic spring reverb : springage.

Every time I think i'm done with wanting new pedals,  someone comes with something like this.
It sounds so great.

Anyway, I remember that near the end of this song, it's one-note solo city....
(great bass line)

Wow thanks, i forgot about this one. Great cover.

Looks good to me. Any chance of a demo?

Here is a link to the demo I was making for my friend to hear the difference between the original and the buffalo.  Guitar is an epiphone casino, bridge p90. I can't mic properly my amp so it is direct recording with a tech 21 Blonde in parallel with a tech 21 leeds.  I just add some spring reverb with a strymon Flint.
First you have the clean sound for reference.
Second clip is both pedals with gain at zero and tone in mid position.  First you hear the Formula then the Buffalo then the Buffalo again but with the tone at max.
Third clip is both pedals with gain at max and tone anywhere since it has no effect with the gain maxed.  First the Formula then the buffalo then the buffalo with the Rage switch on.
So you can get a general idea.
Cheers

Hello,
I finished my second vero build, it's the Catalinbread Formula n°5 with the layout from Tagboard effects, including the "more mode" modification.  I put the "more mode" on a footswitch for ease of use  :)  I made one for myself and one for a friend.
It's also the first time that i use my Test board and it proved to be useful the very first time.  Unboxed everything seemed fine, then boxed nothing happended with the more mode.  It took me a couple of hours to debug the pedal instead of the usual three or five days without sleep ;D

I am very happy with this build even if my wiring is still terrible and some dust was catched between to layers of clear coat.
As sound goes, i would say it sounds 80% like the original.  The main differences are :
- less gain in the Buffalo (except on the rage setting where the gain can be higher than on the catalinbread);
- the buffalo cuts some of the highs and not the catalinbread;
- the sound of the buffalo is more defined than the Catalinbread but also a bit more "flat".

For my taste it sounds very good and the Rage mode can go to almost fuzz when gain is maxed up.  As i own the "real thing" the differences add just some other taste.

Open Discussion / Re: Any Lefty like a righty?
December 14, 2014, 06:51:48 AM
Hi,
I am as far as i remember a complete lefty.  There is no application where my right hand is the dominant one, and it's the same for my feet.  But, i learned to play guitar as  right handed.  Don't know really why, I guess, it was mostly for guitar availability.  At the beginning, I always took the guitar as a left-handed, so I guess there is something natural in that.  The thing that has been the most difficult is the left-hand moves and techniques.  I grabbed the pick really wrong for years and i ended up each show with bleeding fingers (i found it cool at the time anyway).  And I still have some problem with rythm playing, like funky fast moves and i totally suck for finger picking.  So i think i should have been a better player if i have played like a lef-handed but more than that if i was not sooooooooo lazy and practice more.  ::)
