Build Reports / First Veroboard and 1590a
January 25, 2014, 10:02:00 AM
Yay! I got a delivery today and built my first Veroboard build. I am still waiting on the stomp switch and haven't boxed it up, but I am so happy that it works  ;D
It is a Rangemaster NPN treble booster.

Build Reports / Pastie Drive Done!
January 23, 2014, 12:04:48 AM
I FINALLY got it!!

This is a great effect. I ended up getting the board together in no time once I had all my parts. Tested it quickly and then to bed. Next day I hooked up the stomp switch and it sounded perfect till I turned up all gain volume, and tone. This loud squeal came out. I checked all my resistors and volts and everything as fine. Anyway it ended up being something with the stomp switch or board. Changed that and BAM it is perfect. Even with all the dumb problems I had I will end up building another one of these one day. It is the tone I was looking for. Again please disregard the cheap paper/tape decals. I also had an issue with the drilling, so I ended up drilling a piece of Plexiglas and used it to hide my botched drilling.

Tech Help - Projects Page / Pastie Drive Help
January 20, 2014, 06:13:31 AM
Sorry guys I need more help. I have a pastie drive that sounds great at low volumes. However, when I turn up the gain and tone and have the Mids switch in the bottom position I get this loud squeal. I tracked it down with an audio probe and it starts on the middle lead or source of the Q1 j201

I followed the Build instructions except the IC1 I used a TL072CN in place of the JRC4580 (I have one on order)
http://home.comcast.net/~gprause/BuildDocs/Pastie_V1.1_Build_Doc%20V2.pdf

Here are some things I tried:
Took off LED
Changed IC
Tried many other j201s and even a couple 2n5457s

Here are my voltages:
Q1 G 2.97
     S 4.59
     D 9.03
Q2 G 2.97
     S 4.73
     D 9.03

Here is IC
Positive  4.52     9.04
              4.65     4.52
              4.43     4.52
                0        4.51

The 0 on the IC seems strange to me. I also wanted to know if the direction of the Mids toggle matters (1MD6T1B1M1QE) I am getting a darker sound when it is switched up and the middle has a bit more "sparkle" then the bottom is a super bright sound, and that's why when I turn up the tone and gain it gets this loud squeal (that also can be changed as I move the gain and tone)

The other thing I noticed was that using the probe it is clear on the input, but once it starts to squeal at Q1 if I press my finger on the "Tip" solder lug of the input jack it clears up.

Here are some pictures.

I circled where the Q1 transistor is. I also put tape over that spot thinking the solder might be touching the toggle switch.

General Questions / IC subs for Pastie Drive
January 20, 2014, 12:11:57 AM
I substituted a TC072 low noise in place of the JRC4580 that they ask for in a "Pastie Drive"
http://home.comcast.net/~gprause/BuildDocs/Pastie_V1.1_Build_Doc%20V2.pdf

The J201s both measure 9.02 Gate, 470 Source, and 2.98 Drain. I am getting some squealing when I dime the grain and Tone Only when the Mid switch is Down completely. I also noticed that I get some feedback if I am facing the pedal with the Guitar again only when the mid switch is down.

I have some JRC4580s coming in, but I am wondering if there is something else causing the issues?

I mentioned this earlier today and posted it in the 1776 section but thought I would get more of a response here. I thought I had fixed it but was wrong.

Anyway, the effect sounds great but I keep feeling that I am missing some volume. It is loud and sounds great on a tube amp but Compared to the MudBunny this volume is lower. There might not be anything wrong with it so I am still looking for a Demo. If you have a Demo please let me know where to find it.

I checked all resistors and they are the correct value from the Build materials. I did notice that the pinout on the Volume pot is only mesuring 50K when it is on the board. I took it off  and it was 100k. I replaced it anyway, but it happend again.

Here are the Tansistor volts
Q1 C 0.02
     B 0.64
     E 4.10

Q2 C 0.04
     B 0.65
     E 4.32

Q3 C 0.02
     B 0.65
     E 4.09

I just finished this fuzz. Sounds great. I am still too cheap to get a printer and decals.

Im starting to get pretty good at debugging these.  :D

Build Reports / My First Chunk Chunk
January 04, 2014, 07:53:03 PM
I finally finished my Chunk Chunk. The build was not difficult but making sure I had the right parts was a pain. I ended up needing 2 resistors to finish my Pastie Drive and a 3n3 cap to complete a SuckerPunch Over drive. So those will come soon.

Here she is. I had a loud squealing sound from the gain last night, but boxed it up and figured I would dial with that by lowering the volts to the j201s. After I got it together no more squeal. This pedal is HEAVY Metal at its finest. The Led is a Red with very high resistor so it looks a little like a burning ember

Does anyone know of any good amp sim pedal clones? I think Joyo makes a few. I already have something for tweed.

Build Reports / Bacon Bunny 2 in 1
December 17, 2013, 11:02:04 PM
Finally finished my first 2 in 1 build. It is a Mudbunny and Bacon Bits boost.

The mudbunny is my very first build. It is a Rams head that I thought I would never get working,  I ended up finally getting it working. I had to bridge the C13 to the 3rd lug on the volume pot.
The Bacon bits I ended up having the IC1 and IC2 mixed up so I didn't have any sound. This showed me first hand that you have to socket parts.

Big thanks to all who helped me with these and  disregard the hot glue on the wires, I had it sitting out so long I didn't want to break wires.

December 13, 2013, 03:48:34 PM
I am getting together my parts for a Tweedy Bird and I need 6 of them to be pretty much the same. I am wondering how consistent they are and how many I should buy. I was going to get them from tayda

General Questions / More Muff help
December 11, 2013, 04:21:25 PM
Sorry I keep having questions. But I am going to build a Green Russian and creamy Dreamer off the Muff Spreadsheet.

My question is about c15 and R24 being omitted on the excel. I understand the R24 is a safety type feature and not really needed. But the C15 is labeled as power filter. I just want to be sure I am not going to burn the house down.

Open Discussion / Pignose 7-100 Sound
December 09, 2013, 03:01:07 PM
If I were to try and get a Pignose 7-100 sound from a pedal what Pedal should I try to build?

I am still waiting on my Stomp Switches to get my Bacon Bits up and running and Im sure this will be close.

If you have never heard a Pignose, It starts out clean and then at 50% volume it gets some real gritty sounds. It becomes a balance between your master amp volume and the guitar volume to find that sweet spot.

Tech Help - Projects Page / low volume Bunny
December 05, 2013, 12:58:41 AM
I am going back to my first "kinda working" build. It has low output about 1/4 of the output that come from my other mudbunny builds.

I checked the pots and the transistors and they all seem okay. I am going to use the audio prove and look for the problem. Probably a wrong part size.

However, should I just look for the first drop in the volume or are there areas that always come out lower than normal?

Open Discussion / Is there a flash for Building ?
December 03, 2013, 04:38:02 PM
I am wondering if there is some type of flash program for pedal building and colours?

I have seen one for BMX and Guitars. I am just trying to figure out what knobs to use on a military green enclosure. I was thinking of Orange, but giving them a "road worn" treatment to make them look dirty.

Sorry I have so many questions, but thanks to everyone for putting up with me.

I am putting together a Road Rage for the -9v on my Pastyface this weekend. But I am not 100% sure what parts I need. Here is what I think based on the build pdf
C3
C4
C5
D3
D4
IC1
T1 (Im not sure I need unless I care about "dead battery tone")

But it shows part of IC2 in green.

Thanks

Open Discussion / Bacon Bunny
November 26, 2013, 07:09:18 PM
I have a 1590BB and a Bacon Bits and Mudbunny built. However I only have 2 1/4 jacks.

Is it worth waiting for my other jacks to come in or should I just put them in the same pedal ?

I was planning on Input > Bacon > Bunny > output
