Tech Help - Projects Page / The Pig Butt...from HELL!
February 05, 2017, 07:48:38 PM
hey all. I'm working on finishing a Pig Butt and have run into a brick wall.

1) the pedal is sans-box... i am in the process of rocking before boxing :D. I have gone through and verified the values of all components. I can post a picture of the board tomorrow morning, just to make sure that I've not done something stupid like put my electrolytics in backwards. I did graze a box cap with the iron and melted part of the corner. Could that be the issue?

2) when i plug in power and actuate the footswitch, the led turns on. i have measured the voltages of ic's and recorded the following:

4558: 1) 4.57V, 2) 4.59V, 3) 4.49V, 4) 1.2mV, 5) 4.52V, 6)4.57V, 7) 4.5V, 8) 9.1V. While there a few values that are a tiny bit off, I feel like these are close enough (correct me if I'm wrong).

LM471: 1) 4.9mV, 2) 4.96V, 3) 4.77V, 4) 1.3mV, 5) 5mV, 6) 4.98V, 7) 9.11V. These seem a bit wonky...

3) when i plug anything into the pedal, whether it is "on" or "off" i get a horrendous buzzing sound.

I'm at a bit of a loss as to how to proceed, other than clipping all my leads to the board and retrying wiring things with a new switch. I have to say, my pride is a bit hurt. This is not my first electronics rodeo, and didn't think I'd be felled by a "Cowboy" level pedal...

Thoughts? Please don't hesitate to ask any additional questions that may clarify things. Thanks in advance for your help :D

General Questions / Pig Butt - Diode Socketing?
February 14, 2016, 06:45:02 AM
Hi all, I am working on my second build (Pig Butt) while waiting for some additional parts to arrive for my first build (Multiplex Echo Machine). I was wondering, is there any advantage to socketing the diodes? I'm not sure if they are clipping diodes or not... I know the Pig Butt is an op amp fuzz, so I wasn't sure.

If you do recommend socketing, what other diodes would you recommend trying instead of the stock 1N914 and 1N5817.

General Questions / Indicator LEDs...Which to do you use?
February 13, 2016, 03:33:43 PM
Hi all. Noob question here. I have to order some replacement electrolytics from Mouser, and was thinking of buying some LEDs to fill out the order.

I have some diffused red and green LEDs but was wondering if they'd be too dim for use as an indicator LED? What mcd rating do you usually use for your indicator LEDs?

Thanks!

Build Reports / First build - 1776 Multiplex Echo Machine
February 13, 2016, 01:38:02 PM
Hey all... this has been a long time coming. I'm finally getting to my first build, a Multiplex Echo Machine. Unsurprisingly, I've hit my first two snags... Mistake 1: I ordered all my components from Mouser, and first ordered box caps with varied and incorrect lead spacing. Having reordered the correct box caps, I now realize all my electrolytics have different voltage ratings. All are > than 9 volts but 2 values: 47 uf are 4v rated and 100uf are 6.3 volt rated... now I have to order more replacements...it's maddening...

Here are some progress shots:

Open Discussion / BLMS vs Small Bear 1900H clones?
February 04, 2014, 11:54:42 AM
just wondering if anyone had any experience comparing the davies 1900h clones from BLMS and small bear?  BLMS says that the knobs are just "ok" in their description (i really appreciate the honesty), and they suggest ordering a few more than needed to deal with the ones that aren't quite at spec.  BLMS clones are about half the price of the small bear clones.  I'd pay a little more to get the knobs that i know are going to be consistently in spec, however.  Any thoughts?

General Questions / My First Build - Mudbunny
January 12, 2014, 09:49:39 AM
Hello all!  I'm new here :).  I'm a drummer who dabbles in guitar/bass and electronic music.  I have done some circuit bending, tube amp building, and custom midi controller making, and am finally ready to get my feet wet in the pedal building realm!  I'm planning my first build, a Madbean Mudbunny, and thought that it might be useful to document my first foray into guitar pedal goodness.  I plan on detailing each phase of the build:  design, parts sourcing, building, testing, and playing, with all the headscratches and hair-pulling that goes with each of them.  My hope is that a thread like this might help other new builders some time down the road.  So...on with it!

In this post I'll talk about my goals for the project, and show you my design for the enclosure of the pedal.

Goals:  I wanted to take a classic circuit (BMP) that I can use both musically and to learn a bit about pedal building.  I want to use this build to learn about the effects different components have on tone.  As such, I'll socket the diodes and transistors so that I can play with the different combinations to find something that I find nice sounding.  As a basis, I'll start with the Green Russian config.  The Green Russian will also inform my enclosure design...

Design:  I've used the Vector Pack to mock everything up in Adobe Illustrator (though I'd like to figure out how to do the same thing in Inkscape as it is free...).  I imported the drilling template from the mudbunny pdf, as suggested by many, and think that I've lined everything up appropriately.  I haven't actually done that with the drilling template objects yet, but it is the same process as I've done with the knobs.  I still have to double check that everything is actually lined up correctly by printing and measuring, but this should provide you with a snapshot of what I'd like the end product to look like.

FIRST QUESTION!  I really like the place that I've positioned the LED.  However, I don't know if I'll have space with the pots there...  is it possible to fit an LED in between the top two pots?  Just wondering if anyone had attempted this before...

Stay tuned!
