General Questions / Shielded Cable?
June 16, 2016, 11:37:07 PM
I'm about to order parts for my second tube amp build and was wondering what is normally used as shielded cable. My first amp was just the little firefly, which was easier to build than a lot of pedals and it didn't call for shielded cable.  Anyway do you guys use coaxial cable for your sheilded cable? That seems to be all I can find except for the guitar cable they used in the old Gibsons with the shielding exposed on the outside of the cable.

Ok, I got my Total Recall put together. I can Bias IC6 with either of my MN3005s. But when I try to Bias IC7 as I turn the trimmer there is nothing, then noise, then nothing again. All my voltages check out except for pin5/6/7 of IC4 which are on the high side at -12volts. Now this may be because of where the gain1 trimmer was set at the time of checking the voltages (so that may have changed. Not sure). I do get clean delay signal on pin7 of ic7. Anybody have any ideas?

The real kicker is I just left for vacation and won't be able to play with for a week or so. But I can't quit thinking about it ::)

Edit: dang it. Wrong board

I'm getting some conflicting info on the net when using two polar electrolytic caps in series to make a non-polar cap. I read in one place that using two 2.2uf will equal 2.2uf. But normally and what I've read in other places is in order to achieve approximately 2.2 to 2.3uf I should use two 4.7uf caps. So my question is which way is correct? :o

Edit: or would it just be better to use two 1uf film caps in parallel?

Build Reports / Delay Ray....(Aquaboy DLX 2015)
April 20, 2016, 05:43:17 PM
Pretty proud of this one. It took a little trouble shooting, but man does this thing sound awesome. My painting of the enclosure didn't come out like I planned, but I liked what was happening so I went with it. There is white, sparkle blue, dark green, and sparkle green all mixed in with a little of the aluminum coming through. I was just going to strip it and start over. But I like how the colors came. I think you can really see the Manta ray and labels well. Oh, and I like the yellow green LEDs that I didn't even know I had, lol

Tech Help - Projects Page / Aquaboy DLX problems
April 13, 2016, 12:19:54 AM
I just put together an Aquaboy DLX 2015. I get clean signal but no delay at all. My voltages seem good except for pin 8 on the MN3101 is only 0.5v. I did omit D3 since I'm using the new MN3005. So I'm getting the same voltage on C19. Does this sound right?

I'm going to post my other voltages in a minute. Just wanted to ask the first question

Tech Help - Etcher's Paradise / tin or drill first?

Do you guys tin your board first or do you drill the holes first? Never done this before so don't know which way is better

Build Reports / Star Wars inspired
March 23, 2016, 05:47:33 PM
Just finished this one up this morning. It's the Retrograde. Great fuzz and octave. Etched, powder coated, and then put some clear enamel on top.

Did this one awhile back but never posted it. It's Harbinger One. Of course, it has a little light saber in it instead of a lamp, lol. Didn't really come out like I wanted so I went with the used look, lol. Wonderful sounding vibe though

Build Reports / Yet another Moodring
March 15, 2016, 06:31:10 PM
Man, this thing sounds awesome. Definitely one of the best sounding reverbs I've ever owned. Pretty proud of how the the art work came out, but is there any tips for keeping the etching solution from getting through the toner and making little spots. I used lye this time, which takes awhile to etch with (or I didn't make the solution strong enough?). I've used muriatic acid with hydrogen peroxide for my other etches but those didn't come out as clean (but it etches extremely fast).

Build Reports / Pork Barrel (the Police)
March 04, 2016, 02:20:28 AM
I'm not much of a fan of The Police, however I do like quite a few of their songs. But anyway, since Andy Summers was known for using a Boss Chorus, I figured why not name it that.

It came out great. Not real happy with the etch, but it's only my third attempt. I've also been using Muriatic acid with Hydrogen peroxide. I think it may be too aggressive and the etch doesn't come out clean.

Anyway, the two LEDs on top of the car blink red and blue. The two head lights are clear and come on when the pedal is on.

Tech Help - Projects Page / Collosalus trouble
February 18, 2016, 09:58:04 PM
I've built two of the most recent Collisalus and I have the same exact issue with both. I'm building it per the 18 volt instructions. I think I ruined the first board soldering and resoldering. Anyway, both you would just hear a thumping sound and the voltage at the plug keeps fluctuating. Everything is new on this new build with the exception of pots and stomp switch. I've tried different plugs even though I've used known good pedals with the same plugs.

I'm thinking is has something to do with the power since its fluctuating. I asked on the last build and Madbean suggested changing out some caps, which I did, but it still just thumped. I did socket C22 and when I put in a 62pF cap the thumping is more noticeable the if I switch it for a 47pF (there is almost no sound at all with the 47pF).

I've got to ask what is D4, D6, C20, and C21 doing if you're not using the 9 Volt build? They seem kind of pointless, but I'm super new at this so I could be very very wrong.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

I did get the Harbinger One going the other day. Loving it
