General Questions / Touchstone Vibe Mod
« on: April 29, 2020, 10:03:31 PM »
I'd like to add a vibe switch to the Touchstone.   Build doc recommends lowering R23, so, I thought a jumper across would work.  Mods I've found on the web recommend pulling out the other side of the mix (R22).  Are they the same? Seems like there might be a volume change with the jumper choice.

Thought this was cool and tangentially related to pedals...Who knew!

General Questions / VB-2 Vibrato Clock Frequency
« on: April 12, 2020, 02:43:43 PM »
I finished up a BYOC Vibrato.  It's a clone of a Boss VB-2.  I'm wondering what to set the clock frequency to?  Should be the same as a CE-2.

General Questions / Volume Pot Question
« on: March 29, 2020, 12:22:01 PM »
I'm building a DOD 250 and I do not have the A100k for the volume pot.  The volume pot is the last thing in the circuit with pin1 to ground, pin 2 to output, and pin 3 coming from the circuit.  Does the value for this pot matter or change the feel of the circuit at all?  It's just a voltage divider, correct?  Would any audio pot work here?

Build Reports / Glitchee - Corona #1
« on: March 22, 2020, 02:05:40 PM »
Glitchee made me think of Altered States for some reason.  Not sure why, haven't seen that movie in over 20 years.  Anyway, this circuit rocks. I started playing with it this morning and before I knew it an hour had past, which is fantastic under the current circumstances!

Build Reports / The Cutter - Runtime Error

I finished this one a few weeks back.  I really like this circuit, it sounds very unique, highly recommend giving it a try.

Build Reports / NomNom (Phase 90) and a JOYO look alike
« on: February 24, 2020, 01:05:07 PM »
I finished this NomNom awhile back.  Really like this pedal, it sounds great.

I also have a Joyo Classic Phase, I got some years ago for ~$20 if I recall.  I decided to take it apart to see how the components compare.  Looks like pretty legit stuff.  Anyways, I thought it was interestingÖ...

General Questions / Rigol O-scope?
« on: February 19, 2020, 05:08:15 PM »
Anybody have an opinion about Rigol DS1102E O-scope?  I've had an old Techtronix 2235 for awhile now but last weekend it decided to catch on fire!  No joke, lots of smoke  :o

I'm looking on Offer-up and CL for something similar.  There's a few oldies on the cheap side, but I'm wondering if a newer digital would be better.   There's one used I'm looking at for slightly more than a used analog.

General Questions / Filter and Drive Dual Pedal Idea
« on: February 08, 2020, 02:24:01 PM »
I have a Flunkee (DOD FX-25 Envelope Filter) and a Runtime Error (Systech Overdrive) sitting in my queue.  Both are 1590A, which I'm not crazy about.  I was thinking of combining both circuits into one pedal.  Do you think these circuits would complement each other?  If so, what order is recommended or should I include an order selector switch?  Opinions welcome!

Build Reports / Lectric FX Ė Bloozehound (Boss BD-2)
« on: January 27, 2020, 03:32:35 PM »
Finished this one up, this weekend.  Deciding to move the power jack to the top turned out to be a big pain, lots of shoehorning required for that small adjustment.  I should have moved the instrument jacks lower. I also misjudged the height clearance requirement for Beanís new LED trimmer PCB.  I had to wire the trimmer in from the side.

For the graphics I was shooting for a late 80s skateboard look.  I really like the way it came out.  Enclosure is a polished 1590B with no film waterslide.

Hereís a dual 250KB that I converted to a dual 250KA, for the build.  Only burnt myself twice to do it!

Build Reports / PedalPCB Mini Heterodyne Receiver (EQD Data Corrupter)
« on: January 20, 2020, 03:43:02 PM »
Wanted to take a stab at SMD and chose this.  The build went really smooth, Iím excited to do some more SMD.  I bought the faceplate at PPCB, which looks super pro.  Was wondering if anyone knows of a good DIY way to make these?

Pedal is a really loud, noisy, and crazy, but that's intentional.  I think I might add a master volume, itís kind of tricky to get the three levels set.  Overall, really pleased with this one.

Open Discussion / Tayda Grey Box Caps??
« on: December 29, 2019, 01:17:26 AM »
Populating a board, and realized I don't have enough 82nF caps.  I do have a bag of Tayda 82nF caps, I bought a couple of years ago.

The manufacturer, according to Tayda, is Acutronics, which I learned from the inter-web is Kemet.  Does anyone have experience/opinion of these caps?  They are battleship grey with few markings.

The pedal I'm building is an overdrive that I want to sound right. I'm might order some Topmay caps from Small Bear, but don't know these either. Opinions appreciated!

Build Reports / MadBean Collaboration Builds
« on: December 13, 2019, 02:55:51 PM »
So, if youíve been here awhile, you probably know, there are a lot of cool ass people on this forum.

I got some PCBs from jubal81 a few months ago, in various states of completeness and I wanted to post a few of the builds I have completed.  Typing up the build report I decided to make it a big post, adding in other builds Iíve received contributions from other forum members to be able to complete.

First up, Penyroyal Chorus.  Circuit was completed by jubal81, I just needed to add the pots and box it up. Enclosure is a no film decal on a Tayda box.  This is an insanely nice sounding chorus.  I have a newer Small Clone and this one blows it away.

General Questions / 1uF MLCCs
« on: December 12, 2019, 01:55:31 PM »
I'm starting a build this weekend that will need some 1uF MLCCs due to space restraints.  I ordered some from Mouser.  Usually when I order MLCCs I go for the C0G/NP0, but those aren't an option for 1uF.  I ended up ordering some TDK X5R dielectric caps.  Does anybody have experience to say whether or not these are fine?  To make matters more complicated, I don't have a schematic for this build, so, I'm not sure these are going to be in the audio path or not.

I was just looking over Bean's Husky Boy project and it reminded me of this.  It also has some 1uF MLCCs.

Any experience appreciated.

Open Discussion / MXR 117 Flanger - Ten Foot Pole Test
« on: November 19, 2019, 03:13:05 PM »
I'm looking for some advice from anyone who has done repairs on these.  A friend of mine asked me to take a look at his friends vintage MXR 117 (so, friend of a friend to me  :o).  I told him no, because I didn't feel comfortable working on and potential breaking something that valuable.

Today I got an email from my friend asking if I had a spare Reticon 1024A lying around(!), which has me worried they are planning to start pulling parts.

So, should I keep my original inclination and not get involved, or try to save this pedal from certain destruction?  I have a scope and could at least trace the signal out for them.  What do you guys think?

Here is the description of the problem:
"signal is not being bypassed when the pedal is off, so no sound comes out...  when it's activated, the signal comes through but none of the effect is present, so, no effect, only clean"
