Hey all! Long time no post. With the ol plague outside I've had time to get back into building pedals. I have a handful of PCBs from Abominable that I don't understand the off board wiring for. See the two pics attached. Anybody here have suggestions they are willing to share?

Since we haven't seen a an update in a while I was for sure we were going to get something bonkers yesterday.

Here a couple of builds I finished over the weekend...

This is the second LWA Overdose I have put together. The first was in a massive enclosure and was my first working build. For this one I shoved everything into an enclosure half the size. I was encouraged not to attempt this but came out working great, even if it isn't pretty. For the transistors I used BC182's instead of the metal cap 2N2222a(?) that Joe from LWA uses and am much happier with the results. It's not as "soul crushing" as Joe puts it.

I have wanted to build a reverb pedal for a while and got this board six months ago. For various reasons, mostly laziness, this build kept getting pushed to the side. A few weeks ago a friend of a friend found out I was on the DIY train and asked me to build a spacey reverb for him so he ended up with the pedal. I really liked playing this one and will probably get another for myself sooner or later. Next time I will use a smaller box though.

I finally feel like I'm understanding the basics of building even though I don't get to spend a lot of time with the hobby. Much thanks to this board and all its members for all the help you've provided me thus far.

note: I'm open to some other reverb options out there for my next reverb pedal.

Heyo all,

Does anyone have a list of component part numbers for Arrow or Mouser?

I'm ready to place an order and want to try a new vendor.

I know this has been brought up but I can't find anything on the board anywhere.

Thanks!

Not sure if this is allowed. If not, let me know and I will delete the thread. Anyway, you know the drill. I have a few things I've been eyeing that I will be picking up.

Open Discussion / FX PCB List?
September 14, 2018, 04:50:43 PM
Does anyone have a list of companies other than MBP, JMK, 1776, TH Customers, Lectic-FX, and Grind that offer FX PCBs? Curious to see what other folks have out there. If this is breaking I apologize. Thanks!

Hi guys,

I think I know the answer here but before I start soldering this board any further I want to be a little more certain.

A little back story...
When I decided to give building pedals a shot I lurked around the web and ended up getting a Muff Pi kit from a certain company (not GuitarPCB). I painted an enclosure and boxed it and then cried when it didn't work. I slaved over the thing and finally put it away and started on another project. That being said, I have pulled the pedal back out and it is a mess. I almost feel like I should keep it as a paperweight reminder of how bad I was... but where is the fun in that.

After reflowing all solder joints and rewiring the whole thing I realized that this enclosure is cut very tight for this board and everything else. No matter how I wiggle the board in to the box, its going to sit sideways. To reduce clutter I want to use a 3PDT PCB.

I have attached a picture of the board. Does anyone know how to match the wiring up for these? I assume T on the input and output pads would go to the corresponding pads on the 3PDT PCB. After that, I get lost.

Anyone done one of these before or have a suggestion?

Build Reports / Mangler - "Acid Sloth"
July 19, 2018, 05:17:20 PM
Finally finished a run of MBP fuzz circuits for a few friends to pick from. This is the fist of the bunch. It is the Mudbunny with a set of "All-American" transistors from Small Bear. We tried a set of the "Dutch" trannies but they sounded no where close to as good as the "All-Americans".

Not sure if anyone saw or remembers seeing the Brutalist Jr. I posted a little while ago, but it had similar artwork. My friend basically begged my girlfriend to do another animal with the same theme. I think it came out better than the one she did for me!

This thing is the best sounding fuzz I have built and I'm a little sad to let it go.

I have never wired a rotary up, much less added one to a circuit that doesn't call for it. I have a circuit with a mod to add a rotary on one of the cap pads and then have different cap values on each rotary click. How would I wire a 2p6t rotary into this circuit? I'm looking to have 3-4 clicks on the switch and then have the washer block the remaining spots.

Thanks!

Open Discussion / POWER SUPPLY BUILDS?
June 27, 2018, 06:24:36 PM
It's time to ditch the one spot wall wart and get something that will kill the static. Does anyone out there offer DIY builds for power supplies similar to how madbeans offers pedal boards?

Are these jacks supposed to have two or three connections?

https://www.mammothelectronics.com/collections/audio-jacks/products/4sjk102m

If they are supposed to be three wire then how would you wire them up?

Thanks in advance!

So I have a Telecaster my pops played he was younger that was lost to oblivion for about twenty years. Well the thing popped up recently and I got my hands on it. This thing is in rough shape but the neck looks good and so does the body. That being said, I want to gut it and make it my own. Trouble is, I don't know what the guitar really is. The body edges are significantly rounded like a strat and a normal eight hole pick guard wont fit without significant modification. See the picture in the next reply. Anybody have any clues as to what it could be? I know it is at least 30 years old. What would you do with it? I'm looking for ideas.

Build Reports / Brutalist Jr
April 26, 2018, 12:08:12 PM
Here is my go at a Brutalist Jr. This thing sounds great and will probably replace my drive pedal I use all the time. My girlfriend did the artwork and I couldn't be more pleased. All in all, I love this thing. Just wish I would have got it done sooner.

Open Discussion / Your Favorite Strat Pick-Ups
April 09, 2018, 05:45:13 PM
I have acquired a 50's reissue strat built in '82 that has been through the ringer. Before I got my hands on the guitar it set in the case in storage for years. When I got it I opened it up and sure enough everything needed replacement but I left the original pick ups despite all the corrosion and rust everywhere. After putting new pots, toggle switch, cap, jack and new wiring in the guitar still breaks up and is much more distorted than when I was in my teens (I grew up playing this guitar and then it went away for a while). Since the only thing that hasn't been replaced are the pick ups so I want to give it another face lift.

I would like to make this guitar my dedicated clean/twinkly machine but wouldn't mind it having some bite when needed. What would you all suggest sticking in this thing? Hopefully something that doesn't break the bank!

Tech Help - Projects Page / Testing Rig Build Link?
April 05, 2018, 03:09:31 PM
I'm going to try and build a testing rig this weekend so I decided to check the forum for a diagram or a board to buy. Turns out this topic is a jumbled mess and broken links, sites that don't exist anymore, and pictures that aren't hosted anywhere.

Does anyone have a diagram that they would please share with the class?

Got it all together and I believe all my components are correct but I'm having some issues...

When toggled, on one switch setting there is a huge amount of gain or distortion coming through. I tried adjusting the volume and gain trimmers and they are barely even on with the same problem. On the other switch setting the volume is much quiter and it sounds like I'm playing through an old radio with dying batteries, and there is about a one second delay on my attack.

My voltages are:

IC1
1: 4.55
2: 4.55
3: 4.55
4: 0
5: 4.55
6: 4.55
7: 4.55
8: 9.13

IC2

2: .5 mv
3: -
4: 0
5: .1 - 1 mv
6: 2-3.1 mv

IC3
1: 4.98
2: 2.48
3: 0
4: 0
5: 2.78
6: 2.47
7: 1.46 - 1.51
8: 1.5 - 1.69
9: 2.48
10: 2.48

Hey all,

I have one of the Weller SP series soldering irons and the tip got bent a week ago due to a cat running full speed at the chord and yanking it off the table it was on (No cats were set on fire). The tip still worked fine other than having 90 degree bend. I replaced the tip with a pair of cheapos from Amazon. I also recently got into a roll of solder that is .039 in size which I think is larger than what I started with.

Now I'm having issues with the solder being very muddy. Sort of like it isn't flowing properly but this doesn't happen on every joint. When it does get muddy I have to keep the iron on the joint longer than I would like because of the extra heat being applied to components.

Do you guys think I should go with a smaller solder like a .031? Is the heat not transfering properly through this tip? Is the problem a combination of both?

Any links to what you fine folks are using?

Open Discussion / MINI ANGLED WRENCHS?
March 14, 2018, 03:42:55 PM
Hi all,

Sorry if this has been asked and answered before. I was wondering if you all have a suggestion for mini wrench set, preferably angled, to reach those hard to reach spots when fine tuning pedals. For example, LED bezel nut that has loosened? Trying to avoid pulling the whole pedal apart and these would be immensely helpful in the future.

Thanks!

I'm about to start a few projects and one calls for a 3362p trimpot. In an effort to keep costs down I want to order all parts from one place if possible. That being said, Small Bear carries a 3266w trimmer that I think will work but would like a second opinion from you fine folks..

Here are the build sheets..

http://www.bourns.com/docs/Product-Datasheets/3362.pdf

http://www.bourns.com/docs/Product-Datasheets/3266.pdf

My main concern is the contact resistance variation.

3362p: Contact Resistance Variation  ...........................1 % or 3 ohms max.  (whichever is greater)

3266w: Contact Resistance Variation  ........................3.0 % or 3 ohms max.  (whichever is greater)

Will this be a cause for concern?

Sorry if this has been asked before but I couldn't find anything in the forum search.

I have a friend who wants a Big Muff fuzz but is looking for a 70's blues rock sound. Which version of the Mudbunny (triangle, violet ram's head, civil war, green Russian, mayo, creamy dreamer) would be the closest to this? Any other tips? I plan on socketing a bunch of pieces so I can try different parts.

Sorry for my fuzz ignorance. I feel like that is blasphemy around here. haha.
