General Questions / Can a Zombii be a fat fuzz factory?
November 27, 2016, 10:45:40 AM
I have two zombii boards that I would love to turn into fatfuzz factory pedals.  If I understand correctly The fat fuzz factory is the same as the original but has an additional three way switch from hat effects tone.  Is anyone familiar with this?  I really like putting these kits together but I don't really understand the inner workings very well FYI. Thanks in advance. !

Hi.
I know effect order switchers have been covered here and elsewhere before but I am trying to build one with a master bypass stomp switch as well.
Basically, I would like to plug two effects into a box and be able to turn them on and off individually, switch their order, or bypass them both completely.  That would mean four different stomp switches.
Apologies if it's already out there but I have not found a layout for anything that could do that. I feel like it shouldn't be that difficult to make but I can't get my head around how to do it.
Thanks in advance for any help. I have built a few pedals from kits and a few from madbean PCB's but my understanding of this stuff is pretty limited.

Tech Help - Projects Page / Poindexter problem
March 12, 2012, 02:16:35 PM
Hi

Im having some trouble with my poindexter build and I could really use some help.

When I hook everything up there is no bypassed signal at all, totally muted.  When I engage the pedal the LED lights up and there is some static that changes when I adjust the knobs on the pedal but there are no notes or signal from the guitar.  This is the same wether I use my one spot adaptor or a tested 9 volt battery.

I built the pedal exactly to spec, no changes at all.  I did remember to reverse C11 as it is noted in the PDF.
Here is the poindexter PDF:
http://madbeanpedals.com/projects/Poindexter/docs/Poindexter.pdf

There are 5 transistors, all 2n3904.  Here are the voltage readings I got on from them:
Q1:  E:  0
        B:  1.2
        C:  5.2

Q2:  E: 2.8
        B: 0.6
        C: 4.4

Q3:  E:  0.8
        B: 0.8
        C: 3.2

Q4:  E:  0.8
        B: 0.8
        C: 3.2

Q5:  E: 0
        B: 0.4
        C: 5.8

And reading from the diodes:
D1 A- 0
      K- 0

D2 A- 0
      K- 0

D3 A- 0
      K- 9

Here are some pics:  I really tried to light them as best as I could.

It shows 4 transistors but the PCB clearly requires 5.  What transistor should be used for Q5?
Here is the poindexter PDF:
http://madbeanpedals.com/projects/Poindexter/docs/Poindexter.pdf

I found this out because I'm building the pedal right now and I only have 4 transistors lol.  Does radioshack sell 2N3904 trannies or am I looking at a week wait from smallbear?  Or better yet, am I just reading something wrong?

General Questions / Slambox and Zombii Mods
November 26, 2011, 12:47:54 AM
I have a couple PCBs from awhile back that I would like to use now.  I see some notes on the project PDFs that I am curious about.

MOD 1- I see the Zombii v4 notes says "From Matt Palmer: Change C1 to 22uf and C4 to 47uf for a beefier sound!"   So who is Matt Palmer and does this work? Has anyone tried it?  I love the zombii that I have but I do keep an EQ after it to add some bass to it- it would be great if these mods would make that EQ unnecessary.

MOD 2 - From the slambox v4 PDF  "If you find this effect too bright, try subbing smaller values for R1 and R2. A 2M2 is a reasonable alternative."  That sounds cool to me as I do find it a bit bright.  The problem is that I have a slambox v3 PCB which is a bit different than the v4.

The resistors from v3:
R1 1M
R2 10M
R3 10M
R4 5k1
R5 47k
R6 2k2

and from v4
R1  10M
R2  10M
R3  5k1
R4  47k
R5  4k7

So if I want to try this mod with a v3 PCB which resistors should I change out to 2M2s?  I would guess R2 and R3 but this is just a guess.  I bet there are people here that actually understand this stuff that will know exactly what to do.

Any help is appreciated guys- thanks.

I have a slambox and zombii in a single enclosure.  Each effect has its own switch 3PDT switch.  The effects can be ran independently or together.

My question: Is it possible to add a third switch? One that would switch between the effects?

My goal is to have both effects engaged but not running in line- just one in the signal at a time.  I know that there are things like A/B switches but I would like to have everything compact and in this single enclosure.  I would think that just based on logic this shouldn't be too hard to achieve but I cant find any diagrams and I dont know enough about wiring to figure it out.  Please help!

BTW- here is the layout I have used- it works great

From the poindexter info:
" This is a noisy effect. Shielded wire is recommended for the effect output"

Has anyone built this before?  How noisy is noisy?

I looked for shielded wire on smallbear but I couldnt find any- Do they sell it or should I buy it from somewhere else?

When it says use shielded wire for the effect output does that mean for every wire connected to the output?

Build Reports / Zombii Slambox
January 27, 2011, 05:43:46 PM
This is my first build that wasn't from a kit -it really highlighted my incompetence with this stuff.
Sounds AMAZING tho - madbean makes some awesome PCBs.
Thanks to everyone that answered my noob questions here and to runmikeyrun@DIYstomboxes for all the help.

Here it is next to a 808 I built from a ggg kit

guts:

here is a pic of how I cracked the enclosure by using a worn out drill bit that was better off in the trash:

I think I may build the same exact pedal again just so I can try to do a better job at it.  I certanly couldnt do much worse.

hi

I just built a zombii and slambox in one enclosure.  Bypassed signal is fine but when I engage either side of the pedal all I get is a clicking sound (a small click about every half second).  My LEDs dont light up and neither effect works at all.  The sound mutes except for the continuous clicking.

Anyone ever heard of this?

Here is the exact layout I used.  The only difference is that I didnt use a hookup for the 9v.  I simply left both of thoe wires out- could this be causing this?

Tech Help - Projects Page / basic PCB question
January 07, 2011, 07:36:44 PM
I have a couple madbean PCBs here.  A zombii V.4 and slambox V.3.  The PCBs are just black on one side while the other side has writing.
Does it matter which side gets soldered?  I have looked at other builds here and it seems that all of them have the components on the writing side and the solder on the black side- but I would Like to do it backwards.  Would this work or is there a rule?

Thanks!

Hello
I am planning on putting a zombie and slambox into one enclosure, the zombii coming first.  I dont have a lot of experience with building but I do enjoy it very much.  So far I have only one build under my belt and it is a GGG fuzzface.  This being my first build that is not from a kit I have some questions that I hope someone would help me with please.  I am a nerd so I am going to number the questions.  I have tried researching all of this stuff beforehand- a lot of it is just things I am not 100% sure of- and I'd hate to have it ruin my build.

1.  I was planning on buying some #22 gauge wire- this is acceptable right?  If i buy this wire what size shrink tube should I get?

2.  What do you guys put on the side of the PCB with all the solder on it?  I have seen some people just put electrical tape but is that ok?  What is best?

3.  Here is my parts list so far (from smallbear), does it look right?
I found the LED but not a holder for the LED- anyone know where that is or does it come with it?
The slambox uses a reverse audio pot right?

0301A    Box - Taiwanese 'BB' Size White Powder Coat  ('BB' White)    $9.95   $9.95

   0508C    Wire, #22 Pre-Bond, 50 Ft. Sampler  $6.75   $6.75

   2302    LED T-1 3/4 5mm Water-clear High-brightness (White)    $0.50   $1.00

   0611    Jack, DC Power, 2.1 mm All-Plastic, Round (All-plastic Round)    $1.25   $1.25

   0600    Jack, 1/4 in. Mono Switchcraft #11  (#11)    $1.85   $1.85

   0602    Jack, 1/4 in. Stereo Switchcraft #12B (#12B)    $1.89   $1.89

   0200    Switch - Taiwan Blue 3PDT (Blue 3PDT)    $8.50   $8.50

   1001    Alpha Single-Gang 24mm, Linear & Audio Taper, Solder Terms (5K Linear)    $1.25   $2.50

   1001    Alpha Single-Gang 24mm, Linear & Audio Taper, Solder Terms  (10K Linear)    $1.25   $3.75

   1007    Alpha 16mm Single-Gang, Reverse Audio & "W", Solder Terms  (5K)

4.  Absent from my parts list are my resistors and capacitors.  How do you know what type of capacitor to use?  It seems to me that some of them can be the same values but different types- am I wrong?  I need clarification please.

5.  To put both effects in order in one enclosure I used this wiring diagram:
     http://www.generalguitargadgets.com/pdf/two_in_one_wiring.pdf
But it does not fit perfectly with everything so I drew my own diagram out (I apologize but I could not figure it out on my computer so I just hand drew it with some markers and scanned it).
Do you think it would work like this?

If the pic is hard to see there it can also be found here:

Thanks in advance for any info anyone could spare.  I tried to be clear with my questions.

I am interested in putting a zombii and a slambox in a single enclosure, kinda like a sunlion but Z.Vex style.
I have built a few pedals but I am not very educated in how everything works.

Could you post a general layout for combining 2 effects like this in one circuit/enclosure?  Maybe even a layout specific for the zombii and slambox would be great.

I found this...
http://www.generalguitargadgets.com/pdf/two_in_one_wiring.pdf
not sure if it would work with those 2 pcbs tho.  Are the Zombii and slambox both negative ground?

Also- do you think these 2 would fit in a 1590BB size enclosure? I dont see why not.

Finally-- How can I add a LED to the Zombii?

Thanks for any info you can provide. Love the PCBs--built a pastyface and I love it.  Sorry for the stupid questions-- I dont know much but I do enjoy building these things

General Questions / SHO--negative ground?
April 13, 2010, 02:40:33 AM
Hi- I dont have a ton of experience with this stuff but I have built a fuzz face before.

For my next project I want to put in the same enclosure a soulbender and a SHO.  Kind of like a sunlion but with different pedals.   I have it all figured out for the soulbender, I think, but the SHO is Negative ground right?  How can I make it so that it's compatible with a Pos ground like the soulbender?

Any links or tips would be appreciated--thanks!

Tech Help - Projects Page / First thread!

Stupid question:  I am planning on building the pastyface kit (soulbender) and I want to buy all the parts from smallbear.  The pots are listed as 100kB and 500kA on the madbean parts list but at smallbear the pots are just listed as 100k and 500k.  Are these the right parts or is the A and B after the k important?

Here is the page from smallbear:

Also-- cool site.  Hope it gets off the ground.
