I built the madbean TrebleBooster Rangemaster2020, it's awesome, but does not play well with my board power supply, I've had to use a dedicated One Spot.

symptoms:
When I give it an "isolated" (I know probably not truly isolated $75 pedal power supply) from my board power box it HISSES like crazy.
-this does not occur when using a One Spot, but I'd like to know what's causing this and possibly think of a remedy.

Also, sometimes there's a power up delay, sometimes kind of struggles to get up to full power,
and if I unplug it it whines like a failing hyperdrive.
I know charge-pumps are problematic but I've never had such a "tube warming up" amount of time for a pedal to come to life.
-is this maybe indicative of a problem with the Max1044 or 47uf cap?

I built the Old School (opto tremolo) with the VFE Switching Board.

The effect worked, LED flashing with speed, all pots and switches worked.
but somehow there's
No clean bypass signal

Is there a way to verify the Relay?
Does anyone have voltages for the other ICs?

Thanks!

What's the go-to prognosis when touching part of the board (underside) with my thumb seems to help?

I've checked joints and continuity along traces... am I an inductor?

*UPDATED*
I discovered I had skipped Q13, just needed to put that in and the effect works! doh!
Questions about the Max Speed, and treadle friction below, thanks!

Hello,
The Lamp does not light up.

bypass is clean, and when I engage the pedal the LED lights up, guitar signal passes cleanly with some change in tone, knobs and switches have mildly noticeable affect.

Majority of my voltages are spot on the PDF, with some minor discrepancies.

I'm getting about 14v on the positive side of the Lamp. But with it in place there is 14v on both pins - does that indicate a bad lamp?

I measure about 60ohms on my DMM between the two lamp pins.

The lamp came with the PCB, I don't think I blew it, but maybe I did, is that common?

Hey all, I built this Man O War, you may have seen other posts I've made on here for help as I was debugging it.
1 bad IC, four broken traces, and hours of "biasing" (by ear, I don't have a scope), I got it functioning in a way I can use.

but the clock noise is pretty heavy as soon as I roll the DELAY time past a certain point.
I know I can adjust the trimpots in a way to avoid this ever happening, but that would defeat the point of a 2x mn3005 circuit.
I assume there is an underlying issue

Any idea what would be causing a less than great performance from my 2x mn3005s? Bad clock IC?

Build Reports / Build Report of my MXR Dist+
June 06, 2021, 08:41:36 PM
Hey gang, here's a video I made with a build report and demo of my MXR Distortion+ kit from GGG,

It didn't work at first and after checking the solders and values, I started swapping components and using a probe to search for the problem. Eventually discovering I had two resistors transposed (4k7 / 1M) because of a typo in the documents! Dang.
So after a long haul of debugging, and a lot of forum searches and reading, I got the pedal working great.

General Questions / Man O War, stuck. please help
April 19, 2021, 09:09:35 PM
I posted on this in another category but the only responses I've had were to repeat my due diligence (reflow, check values, etc). If it turns out I did miss something I will kick myself, but honestly, I've got a half dozen working pedals (among my other electronics projects) and this one is just not playing nice.

Has anyone completed a Man O War (not dlx)?

I just can't find anything wrong with my build, it gets to the NE571N and just stops.

The voltage on the output (pin7) is 11.11v when it should be only 2.97v.

also voltages on Q2 are 12v, 10.75v, 10.4v and should be 11.71v, 2.96v, 2.39v (Q3, Q4 are likewise high on B, E pins)

All the other voltages seem within acceptable range, but the signal basically stops at inside the 571 and becomes a helicopter.

I've tried different OPAMPs, Transistors, and another compander, same result.
What else can I do?

Thanks!

Well, the day finally came, I got all the IC's in, MN3001's from Small Bear,
MN3005's from DIYGUITARPARTS.AU, and an SA751N from Pedalhacker...
Plugged it all together and... nothing.

*side note, I'm not sure if it's possible to assemble the pedal as described in the build docs, I followed the drilling template exactly on a 1590BB and the DC Jack is blocked by a diode and capacitor. It's not like that in the included photo which appears to be an earlier version. I started a new enclosure in a bigger box, taking the LEDs and Pots off the pcb.

I've started going through the circuit with my audio probe, and found that the signal gets to Pin 6 of the SA751 (NE570), but there's nothing coming out of Pin 7 (and no signal downstream of that point).
I'm hoping someone can offer some help or suggestions in debugging before I order another IC (and hope that's the issue)

should I go to PedalHackers again?
does anyone have a source for another NE570 equivalent?

Here are my IC voltages (Madbean doc values in [...])
Clearly my Q's have crazy high voltage, and PIN7 of IC2 is way high...Does this indicate a specific issue? What is the next step?
- some of the voltages are not printed in the Doc the page seems to get cut off.

I've heard to keep values within 5% but

can I get away with using a 22n for a 27n?
how about a 3n3 for 3.9n?

they both seem to be in the runup to a Q.
Is that a common filter or bias arrangement. Will using a slightly lower value for those caps...hit the Q harder?

Is it worth it to trust the designer and wait for the exact parts?

General Questions / Cave Dweller 2 shopping list
February 23, 2021, 04:32:29 AM
Hello there pedal people! I've got a few kit builds under my belt, now getting a shopping list together to make my own pcb and enclosure. I'm oddly confident about the etching transfer part, but really out of my league when ordering the parts.

I went through the BOM and found the closest I could discern at a couple well known online stores. But I was basically just picking from the available parts by price. There are so many variations

I'd love to hear what people's favorites among the various brands and specs?
Can I post pngs of my shopping list (Mouse store and Ursa Minor) with exact item #s?
