Hey guys,

Kind of a stupid question, but what is your preferred supplier and why?  I have about half a dozen partially done pedals sitting here (a couple compressors, an Uproar, a Boneyard, and a few others) that I haven't gotten to work on for a couple years due to life stuff going on.  I went through my available components and will need to place a reasonable-sized order to get everything to finish them (including enclosures, switches, etc.).  I'd prefer to get everything from one supplier, if possible.  I've ordered from Mouser in the past, and at least once from Mammoth.  Good experiences from both, but thought I'd just toss this out there to see what everyone prefers before I make my next order.  Tayda hasn't gotten much on here love due to quality of some of their stuff, though I have no experience with them.

Anyway, thanks for any and all thoughts!

Tech Help - Projects Page / Is my Boneyard fried?
March 04, 2014, 10:08:39 PM
Hi all,

Those on here who know me will know that I'm more of a player than a pedal builder, though I've become at least reasonably competent at building over the past few years.  However, I recently ran into an issue that I don't know how to trouble-shoot, so I'm looking for a more knowledgeable member to point me in the right direction.

I have one of the old style Boneyard pedals (3 stomp switches), and while I was swapping some pedals on and off my new pedalboard last week, it all of a sudden stopped working correctly.  I've had it for a couple years, and have used it regularly with no issues, so this is a surprise.  It makes a hideous hum sound when plugged in, and won't allow any guitar through at all.  When I touch both the input and output cable, a good portion of the hum dies down and some small amount of guitar signal passes through, though it sounds awful.  All the LEDs continue to work, also.

I'm assuming one of my two ICs is fried, though I don't know how to test that besides swapping in new ones (which I don't currently have, and must order).  I do have some of the other components socketed, so I made sure to re-seat everything, but to no avail.  Any ideas for a novice trouble-shooter?

Audio/Video Demos / Boneyard demo (studio-recorded)
October 23, 2011, 06:34:50 PM
Hey all,

Here's my first Madbean pedal demo.  Excuse the rough patches in editing and playing!
http://youtu.be/Q1dSxI5MFxQ

In terms of the vid itself, I have some serious recording gear, so I was able to get a sound that is darn close to what it sounds like "live."  That said, it's a bit more compressed here, plus the bass is getting slightly boosted, but I'd still say this is 90-95% of what it sounds like in the room with the amp.  Comments welcome.

Requests / n00b (beginner) forum
October 20, 2011, 07:56:45 PM
Hey guys,

Since I don't get to work on my pedals very much, I feel like I'm not learning this stuff as fast as I should, and therefore my questions are sometimes VERY elementary.  I'm not apologizing for that exactly, and many of you have taken the time to answer some of my beginner questions, but I don't want to dump basic questions into specific forum chains.  Oftentimes, they go unnoticed, and they also can kind of get in the way of some of the other discussions.  I do search in other forums, but the ones that I have found with the most knowledgeable members are also the ones that require MASSIVE sifting to actually  find an answer.

So, would it be worthwhile to have a newbie/beginner forum section here, just to keep things more clearly defined?  Just a thought, and I appreciate any feedback.

Tech Help - Projects Page / Boneyard grounding issue?
October 13, 2011, 08:45:35 PM
Hey all,

I have a very nice Boneyard pedal here that I'm loving so far, but there is this crazy high-pitched squeal going on any time I run medium to high gain (or use hot pickups).

I saw this thread, and my issue seems to be similar, though I haven't tried it with active pickups yet:  http://www.madbeanpedals.com/forum/index.php?topic=2290.0

I think I've at least narrowed it to the input jack in some capacity.  When it's on the highest gain setting, it squeals like a 12 year old girl at a Justin Bieber concert.  If I reach inside the pedal and touch the tip of the input cable, about half the volume of the squeal disappears.  If I do that AND touch the part of the 1/4" plug that's outside the enclosure at the same time, it goes away entirely.  Literally nothing happens when I do the same to the output jack.

Any ideas, mates?

General Questions / transistor socket
December 02, 2010, 07:58:13 AM
How many of the veteran builders here use sockets for transistors?  Considering trying it now for my builds, but didn't think of it until after I had already ordered all the other parts.

Open Discussion / Great cover song

Not sure if this is something that should be posted here or not, but I'll gladly remove it if asked.
Anyway, check out this amazing cover song.  You'll all know the original, though this one barely resembles it.

Tech Help - Projects Page / Fatpants capacitor question
November 12, 2010, 07:25:53 AM
Hi all,

REALLY feeling like a n00b at the moment, but I searched the forum and couldn't find this answer anywhere:

The only place I could find 220pF (.00022uF) electrolytic caps was Mouser and they don't keep it in stock.  Where do you guys find these?  Is there an acceptable substitute (I'm assuming there is not)?  Thanks in advance for any info.

General Questions / Parts stockpile?
November 11, 2010, 09:37:03 PM
Hi all,
So, I'm ready to jump head-long into this pedal building thing, but I have a practical question about getting started.  Since I don't have a good electronics store near me, should I stockpile a bunch of different components so I don't need to order pieces each time I want to try a new project (seems silly to do that)?  Perhaps there are kits sold by a supplier that would appropriate for this.  Recommendations?  Thanks in advance.

Open Discussion / New here
November 09, 2010, 06:20:46 AM
Hello all,

Been lurking here for a few days and finally decided to jump in.  I'm a electronics fan, but a pedal-making n00b, so I'm sure I'll be asking lots of questions!  I'm trying to decide what to make first, so comments welcome.  I'm considering the Cupcake, Serendipity, or Egodriver first (at least while I'm waiting for an official version of the Riot clone!).  Thoughts?

Thanks to all (especially madbean) for participating in such a cool forum so I can ask questions and learn here.  Cheers!
