Tech Help - Projects Page / Apis no longer working?
January 08, 2015, 04:19:35 PM
So, here is the short version of this tale: I built myself an Apis. I sold it on TGP for cheap to help fund an amp purchase. Shipped Apis to south Africa. Buyer tells me it doesn't work. He ships it back and it doesn't work! I have a suspicion that he put the wrong voltage into it and cooked something. I've taken it apart and and don't see anything unusual or obviously messed up. Bypass works, everything on the jacks, switch ect looks good, so I'm guessing he toasted an op amp or something? He told me he tried a bunch of different power supplies which worries me...

Anyway, I gave him a refund and I'm glad to have it back because I was missing it and I'd like to get it going again for my own personal board.

Where would you guys start with trying to repair it?

Here she is just because...

Hey gang, been awhile since I've been on the forum.

I have a Kingslayer I recently built and In my current rig, I wish I could tone down some highs.
Like, I wish the tone knob went down lower. about 9o'clock is the brightest I ever set the treble knob, but there are times when setting it to zero I wish it was even lower.

It sounds good with other rigs, but with my particular setup I'm wondering If maybe changing a cap value would help me get what I'm after. Hope that makes sense.

What do you guys think?

Cheers!

Edit:
After having a look at the schematic, I'm wondering if changing C15 (5n6) to a different value would be the trick?

Also, My knowledge of schem and tone controls are extremely limited.

General Questions / Most transparent madbean boost?
August 28, 2013, 06:11:23 PM
Hey guys,
I finally got an amp (Morgan AC20 deluxe) that I love the dirty sounds on and I think that dirt pedals seem to take away from the sound of the amp when trying to push it harder. Until I tried a Thunderpuss I built, which Just seems to push the amp without a lot of color and extra...stuff. The amp sounds like an AC30 being pushed. I love all the chime and clarity, but when I put any dirt in front of it, it loses a lot of the chime and clarity. (klon, Zen, TS808, etc) So I'm thinking a transparent boost might be better for me.
I built the Thunderpuss for a friend and just happened to gig with it on my bored a couple of times.
The time has come to give it to him, so I need to build myself a boost.
So Is there a better boost than the Thunderpuss for me?
I like that it is one knob. (but doesn't have to be limited to that)
The most important thing is I just want it to push my amp without adding anything extra (color, treble, etc).
What do you guys think on a transparent boost project?

Build Reports / My Cosmopolitan (screwdriver)
March 27, 2013, 04:42:41 PM
Hey everybody, here is a cosmo I've been working on the last 2 weeks.
I have been trying to find a fuzz that isn't your typical fuzz face. I wanted something more like an overdrive with fuzz qualities to it, and I think this is exactly that! I absolutely love this circuit! I'm floored with how good this sounds. It is stock and uses an AC127. I really want to do a lunar module now too!
The color is red kryptonite. It was hard to get the sparkle to show up. Anyway, here she is!

Mods / blend switch on Sabertooth??
March 26, 2013, 08:48:20 PM
the bass player in our band asked me to make him a Sabertooth, so I am.
I have this idea of using a toggle to add the dry signal back in parallel with the fuzz circuit which would essentially make the output knob a blend to a certain extent (i think). That way he could keep his dry signal but blend in a little bit of woolly mammoth, or if he wants 100% mammoth he can flip the toggle and be back to stock.
Anyway, In my head I could see how that might work.
What do you guys think?

Build Reports / Kingslayer
March 24, 2013, 12:09:45 AM
I haven't posted a build in awhile so heres my Kingslayer! This is a wonderful OD, but most of you probably know that. I didn't really put a whole lot of effort into wiring neatly because I was so ready to try it! This is really a great sounding build I'd recommend to everyone!  ;D

General Questions / momentary switch bypass circuit
February 22, 2013, 03:05:23 PM
What are you guys using for a momentary 'soft-touch' switch true bypass?
I remember seeing a few in build reports.
I kind of have this idea of making a TB looper with all momentary switches....
Just curious what circuit/board you guys are using for that purpose.
Thanks!

The last couple of my orders from mammoth I haven't been very pleased with.
I can order stuff from PPP and mouser and get them in in 2 days. I live 50 minutes from Mammoth and it takes about 9-10 days to get 10-15 small parts. Just wondering if anyone has had any of the same issues?
Maybe I need to be more patient.  ???

Build Reports / Badger drive (Apis & thunderpuss)
January 03, 2013, 03:01:50 PM
I've haven't posted anything in a while so I thought I would post this.
My sister wanted me to make her boyfriend a pedal for christmas. I knew he liked the klones Ive made and wanted a boost so I decided to make him an Apis/thunderpuss 2-in-1.  The inside isn't as neat as I would have liked and the decal is "so-so" because It was such short notice right before Christmas. He loved it, so that's all that matters I guess.
I really liked raulduke's latest labeling styles and wanted to try something similar, so shout-out to raulduke for the inspiration. Also my sister's boyfriend has a thing for Honey Badgers...
I don't know why, my sister just said do something with a badger, so I did.

General Questions / Anyone have a pic of PPP hammertone?
December 13, 2012, 04:36:48 PM
PPP has black hammertone as well as blue.
Anyone have a picture in one of those? I keep getting surprised by their colors when they actually arrive.

Also where can I get LED lenses in the US? I checked mouser and mammoth with no luck.
Thanks!

I cant believe I'm having issues with such a simple circuit... I'm actually making 2 at the same time. The first one had the whine issue, so I whipped up my other Thunderpuss board and it also has the same issue!
The boost knob does what it is intended to do, but there is a weird loud whine with it. as the boost increases the whine seems to decrease a little. The whine isn't very high pitched; it is almost like a buzz...
I double checked all my component values and they are correct....
I'm guessing it has to the the transistor?  :-\
FYI they are not boxed up, Im testing on my "testing station"

Tech Help - Projects Page / Kingslayer switch popping
October 08, 2012, 01:42:06 PM
Hey guys,
I finished my Kingslayer yesterday and it sounds great,  but I'm getting a really loud pop when bypassing and engaging the pedal. I did the buffered version so I'm not really sure how to address the issue....
Thanks!!!

Open Discussion / MIDI PCB out there?
September 14, 2012, 09:39:37 PM
just curious if anyone knew of any usb MIDI PCB.
I'd love to play with making some midi pedals...
Disaster area amps used to sell these boards, but it appears they dont anymore...

General Questions / Which solder station should i buy?
August 14, 2012, 05:09:05 PM
I'm new, and really enjoy pedal building so far.
I feel like I would be better suited using a solder station with adjustable temp.
What is a decent one for under $100? (preferably around $50...)
Im currently using a yellow walmart iron  ;)

So I'm just getting into this so please excuse what might be a noob question.
Is IC installed correctly here, or should it turned the other way?
Because this one doesn't have the little notch on the end I'm unsure of which direction is correct.
