As some of you know, I've been away on a gig for neatly four months now, and I'm going home soon! Due to this I have a massive backlog of stuff to build. I need to place a large order if stuff, but i don't want gone tiriubke shooting everything!

I bought 5,000 resistors, and all the 9mm pots recently from tayda, Alpha is Alpha!

But, I need to buy the rest of the stuff.

I am thinking box caps from tayda, and diodes transistors etc.. Somewhere else perhaps, I have only bought pots and knobs from smallbear., but the seem to be pretty good with device etc..

Any opinions on the best place to get this stuff at a reasonable price.

Oh yeah, I am in UK too, but I don't mind ordering from anywHere, as I'm not back for a few weeks, price is king!

Open Discussion / Wah/Volume question..
September 18, 2013, 05:08:15 AM
So a friend has asked me to build him a good wah into an old shell he has.

He asked me, if it would be possible to have the wah pedal as a volume pedal when the circuit is not engaged.

I'm trying to wrap my head around it.

We built a passive volume pedal out of an old wah, just using a pot.

Would it be possible to switch to that?

Or possibly, a small breakout box with another Footswitch in, 4PDT maybe. I have one lying around.

Has anyone seen these?

If that drive turns out to be anything other than a tubescreamer, I will eat my hat.

I wonder how much they pay for those custom enclosures..

I've never been a fan of the 'roll your own' as I find it's always been hit or miss.

Does anyone have any experience of this with VTL5C3 or NSL-33, as I have both of these in my parts emporium.

I have seen these here somewhere, maybe on some of Raulduke's builds..

A couple of questions -

1) what are they?
2) where do I get them?
3) do they come in 3mm?

Thanks dudes :)

Open Discussion / Help! What Klon layout is this?!
August 25, 2013, 05:50:00 PM
So, ColesBD was having a clear out and I bought a mixed bag of stuff, a ton of pre drilled enclosures and other stuff, amongst the lot, was a pair of 'half populated Klon bowrds'. When I asked him about them, he said he couldn't remember where they came from, and thought they were sunkings. But now I have them in front of me, they are not. The only writing on the board, in  copper looks like the word 'klonk'?

Any help would be appreciated :)

Thanks

So, in an effort to learn some more, i thought i'd try to hack a few things together. I had this idea of taking the fatpants v2, and feeding it in to an overdrive.

So.. i did it, it may be all kinds of wrong, hence posting it on here, constructive criticism/help/advice welcomed with open arms :).

So it's a fatpants, minus the volume control, i put a 50k resistor inline instead as that should be roughly around the 12 o'clock (maybe - no way to test things at the moment) as i want it as a preamp, with the fat control, but not the volume (and want it not to boost, or maybe a touch, depending on how it affects the overdrive circuit). Then it feeds in to a TS style dual op amp overdrive, the first half having diode clipping. The second half having one of Jack Orman's modded TS9 tone controls, and in the middle i put some mosfet clippers on a swicth before the tonestack.

This is really just an experiment, and to try and do some learnin' whilst i have the next two months away from building.

Thanks Dudes

So whilst on this long long residency. I made a Russian friend. A fellow guitarist. So we have exchanged emails etc.. He has said he is willing to get hold of stuff in Russia, and send it to me. So I was wondering,  does anyone know where to get germanium stuff from in Russia, maybe even Moscow. Also, what is the good stuff. As I haven't had too much experience with Ge mojo parts.

I know this is a strange post. But I thought some one here would know something.

Thanks!

Open Discussion / Anyone on this forum in Tunisia?
July 23, 2013, 11:03:17 AM
I know it's a long shot, but I am in Tunisia for the summer gigging, and could really use a torx screwdriver, and the post from abroad is not good apparently. I know it's a long shot, but I was hoping maybe someone on here would know a shop or somewhere i could order one from!

So, I'm away for the summer on a gig, and am getting serious withdrawal symptoms, so i have done lots of Eagle designing, and am getting a lot of small runs of boards done.

So, on to the "Multi pedal of doom". I have this idea to put a load of pedals in one box, so that i can just take that to a gig, dump it on the floor, plug in the power, and away i go. Obviously it's not to replace either my big board, or my pedal train nano, but i think it'd be really useful!

So, i have 4 main questions..

A) What to put in a 'ready for most scenarios' multi..

This is what i am thinking so far

1) Boss TU 2, gutted - and the screen screwed down, I saw it on a thread here maybe?
2) Compressor (Afterlife)
3) Fatpants v2 (clean tone secret weapon)
4) Shoot the Moon Tremelo (I'm having some 1590A boards fabbed)
5) Nautilus (amazing pedal - I've done an SMD layout in eagle that fits easily in a 125b or maybe 1590b can't remember)
6) Klon Centaur (True Bypass)
7) Zen Drive (I'm having some 1590A boards fabbed)
8) Zero Point Micro/Cave Dweller (not sure on that one)
9) Boost - Maybe Thunderpuss

As you can see, a lot of the boards are quite small, ish..

B) What enclosure would i need, perhaps a looper type enclosure?

C) Is there an issue with having that many charge pumps running of one power supply?

D) Does anyone out there have any information on a True Bypass conversion for the TU 2

Any information would be massively appreciated, on either on what should or should not be in there, circuit order etc...

EDIT - I've not built the Zero point micro, so opinions on that circuit would be good as well. Also, does anyone know if a tap tempo is easily rigged up with the ZPM?

Thanks dudes

Open Discussion / Ground Plane..
July 13, 2013, 08:39:32 AM
A little while ago, i remember someone saying something about R.G Keen having recommended against the use of ground planes. Does any one remember this, or have a link to it? Or if you have any views on the pros and cons of using a ground plane when designing a board layout, please feel free to share, i'd be very interested to hear everyone's thoughts on the matter!

Open Discussion / Zen drive Mosfet Clippers?!?
April 18, 2013, 10:15:46 AM
So i've built two of theses things, one from a serendipity etch, which sounds killer, the other is a grind customs feng drive (1590A). The serendipity sounded so good that i put the mosfets clippers in so the circuit is the same as the bean schematic.

The feng has tons more distortion!

I used 2n7000's in the serendipity, but when i came to build the feng, I did have any left, so i used BS170, obviously swapping the pinout.

Do you think the BS170's are causing the fact that there are lots more distortion? Those are literally the only components different.

I'm sure some of you diode/FV wizards will be able to give me a good answer!

thanks

General Questions / Harbinger charge pump..

Is there are reason the charge pump in the harbinger one isn't the usual max1044 type?

Also, can't wait to order some boards tomorrow!

Open Discussion / Big enclosures..
March 26, 2013, 02:20:04 PM
So, I'm going away on this gig to play in a hotel somewhere hot for the summer, and i don't want to take my board, cause i have loads of stuff to get on the plane, was thinking of building a 6in1 or something. I have some really awesome tiny board to build up, and will probably put a lot of them in a on enclosure, so i don't have to take a board..

I don't know what will be in it, but.. I have an Afterlife, Apis, 1590A ZenDrive, think i have a cave dweller knocking around too, and a 1590A timmy with SMD from pickdropper, and 3 1590A Muffs form Jimmy. (i'll probably audition the dirtpedals, and put two in), and anyone who knows me, knows there will be a fatpants v2 in there too!!

So, i need an enclosure to put it all in, what do you guys think, and what model numbers would they be, not built anything that big yet..
