I built a P19 version of the Big Muff - based on Juansolo's spreadsheet, and used BC550 tansistors.  I have been trying for about three months to figure out why it wont work - it gives a bit of a volumeboost/ very subtle overdrive but no muff-ness.

I was reading on the net lat night about muff variants - I think it was GGG - about being carefull with making sure the pinouts on transistors are correct.  So of course (hand slap to forehead) , I look at an on-line spec sheet and sure enough, the  550s are 180 degrees reversed from a 2N5089 and the like.  So last night I flipped them around and BAM!!!! muffy, muffy goodness.

So pleased that this one finally works.

Tech Help - Projects Page / Runt build ... Problem
November 12, 2013, 05:06:21 PM
What does it mean if the pedal only works if I am holding all three pots in my hand?

Let me explain: I was having trouble getting any sound from a runt build, and found a few mistakes I had made ...cold solder joints etc retouched everything I could think of, removed the pots and the power jack from the enclosure, and then was giving the wires a gentle tug to make sure they had contact with the board etc

At one point I had all three pots in my hand with fingers contacting the pads on hey eh potentiometers and the sound came through!!

I am assuming this means a grounding problem, but I have checked all the connections against the build documents and all the grounds are going where they need to be.

Suggestions?

I got my snarkdoodle to work (finally) but the sound is kind of farty / blatty..

Anyone have a similar experience?

I did not use the optional switch for the higher gain stage! but jumpered pads 1 and 2.

Thanks

General Questions / LED for a battery power mangler
March 10, 2013, 03:55:18 PM
Hey all

Can I get some advice on how to add an led to a battery powered positive ground mangler? I'm using some ge transistors from small bear ..I,don't want a road rage board in this.

I found the wiring diagram on the mangler project page, but its left me a bit confused :  the diagram shows the black lead from the battery going to the flat side of the led and the round side then going to the footswitch (top left pole).   Where does the 9v power wire to the pcb connect?

Thanks

General Questions / Green Bean question please

I am looking at the BOM for the green bean and it refers to a 20kW pot.

what the heck is a W pot?

General Questions / Snarkdoodle caps
January 30, 2013, 12:17:01 PM
My snarkdoodle build is not working. I am startign to debug, and have a question:

I use radial caps rather than axial and use the middle pads as shown in the pic below.

is this correct?

General Questions / Road Rage wiring

A bit confused about the wiring to the Raod Rage  ???

Ive attached an image with my question:

thanks for the help.

I was reading the build documents for the Rangemaster and it says its not recommended for solid state amps, like my Vox.  Is there any impact on the sound when using this pedal for solid state? IS there any treble boost or is its goingt o end up a volume boost (I have the Thunderpuss for that purpose).

in an ideal world (and a deeper wallet) I'd have a tube amp, but I don't.

to build, or not to build? That is my question.

Hi all -

Can I get some help with how to wire the Boost switch for the Tube Sound Fuzz? There are three solder lugs on the pcb - how do I wire it up, please?

General Questions / road rage question
January 12, 2013, 10:13:32 AM
I am confused by the road rage instructions.  ???

I am building the Mangler Fuzz and all i need is the voltage inverter.

I bought a LT1054CP ici for it.  will that do for the inversion function, or do I need the TC1044SCPA for that?

thanks guys.

General Questions / Cupcake Trimmer question
January 11, 2013, 10:49:53 PM
I just populated the pcb for a cupcake build and I realized that I used a 20k trimmer for the Sustain ... The build docs call for a 10k.  My bad.... Can I leave it in there or should I replace it? I obviously don't have ones I used the 20 k.  Will it still work???

How Do I? Beginner's Paradise. / Volume pot issue
January 10, 2013, 01:03:43 PM
Hey all - I just finished a Mudbunny build - my third project to date (Thnderpuss and a GGG Fuzz Face also complete).

I had HUGE trouble with the crap wire I used breaking at the PCB when tried to install it... very stressful.

I have a weird issue wth the volume pot. I was super careful not to let the pot get too hot - I cooked one once in trying to make a perfboard fuzz - but when I test the cicuit it works, when I get it all in the enclosure it works, but when I tighten the bolt on the pot to the enclosure - the volume kicks out.

i think its shorting somewhere, somehow - is it when the top of the metal pot / solder tabs touch the enclsoure? If i wrap the whole thing up in electrical tape (kidding - but if I try and insulate the top of teh box with tape or the pot itelf)

If I leave the pot in 'loose' (not tight to the box) it works....

Any thoughts?

thanks

Hi all - I am hoping to start on a Mangler build soon, and have the parts on their way from Small Bear.

IF I use teh Raod Rage - do I need to reverse all the capacitors on the Mangler?

thanks

I know, I know...build ALL of them  :) (and Improbably will) but for a start Rams Head or Triangle?

Any opinions ?

Tech Help - Projects Page / Mangler Power Supply
December 06, 2012, 01:19:35 PM
Hey all - the build instructions for the mangler refer to using a 9v isolated power supply. Not sure what that is, but I have a Danelctrode pwer supply that I bought for my chicen salad and tuna melt pedals.

Is this what the buidl refers to?
(i am thinking not, but - a guys gotta ask, right?)

I've got a Yellow Shark board on the way to me in the mail - and I am sourcing parts locally.

the Transistor calls for a 2N5457 - I can source a 'regular' tansistor or a JFet with this code.

*which should I use??

Thanks
