Open Discussion / Re: Footswitch PCB
« on: November 06, 2019, 12:50:06 PM »
Attaching a footswitch to the actual effect circuit is one of the most predictable paths of future failure, IMO. The footswitch is the point that receives the highest mechanical force exerted on the enclosure (which is itself not as rigid as it might seem). Any flex on the enclosure from stomping on the switch could lead to small fractures in the solder joints on that switch which will lead to failure at some point. When you have two separate boards, there's no rigid plane to cause those failures: the small footswitch PCB simply has nothing trying to keep it in one plane.

I've put together some basic kits before that have onboard pads for footswitches... not a very durable method? These are designed for beginners too. Bad practice? Encouraging bad habits?

Wow, never thought I would see my pedal show up on a reverse engineering DIY project, cool.
A friend and I designed this circuit and the PCB CAD, yes, in my basement (haha).
Life got too busy to continue hand building these.
Perhaps I should dig out some old un-built PCBs and build some?

Dad gave me a kit from them this past birthday last january. Kit was missing several parts, they chalked it up to a "bad picker". It was their blue box clone (name escapes me, I have it somewhere in this room...deviator or something) with a pre-finished and printed enclosure. The circuit never worked as they never included the DIP sockets for the chips and I soldered them direct and possibly damaged one. After fighting with it I finally got it to make some sort of sound, but it was doomed from the start and eventually had too many damaged pads from me refusing to let it die that I finally gave up on it. I was less than pleased. I had ordered kits from them in the past and had zero issues (that weren't my own). Bummed. Haven't ordered since.

the part supplier and source of the part. Tolerances may be off, plastic quality, etc. Cheap parts can just fail

I love the secret EH options they put in! I love the memory boy don't get me wrong, but I want long delays and a feedback knob that doesn't shoot right into "OMG TURN IT OFF" territory right away. The dd-7 also has a modulation and analog mode as well if I find I need that vibe again.

I was expecting a gorgeous bass. But this is way better, and will definitely take up most of your time lol

tried it direct into the pedal then into the rig nothing in front. I think I have it figured out now, it doesn't like hot input signals. Sent boss a support message they confirmed. Normal passive, normal active, nothing hot. It may also not be playing nice with my audio interface, as the more repeats stack up it start to clip. I've been used to pedals you can throw any signal into. And now that I think about it, the POD doesn't really like like anything remotely hot either and I have to be careful using the LP as it clips easily. Ultimately I need to find an alternative to the POD for recording the thing is too damn finicky.

Tried it with the rig. Basically it doesn't like any slightly hot signal through it. And my LP pickups are slightly hot. My p-90's are mostly ok and my strat is fine. Just kinda a bummer it can't handle all three.

Opened it up (with some difficulty) and appears to have never been opened. Everything looks factory. Bummer

crap now I might have to open it. The thing looks barely used save for velcro on the bottom and included a tap tempo box. The velcro look fairly fresh too.

So for the longest time I had a boss dd-5. Was my delay for years. Traded it for an original ce-2 a while back and replaced it with an EH deluxe memory boy. Decided I miss the digital delay too much, so off to reverb I go a-lookin'. No dd-5s, but they have a dd-7 and included home brew tempo box for $100. Sold. So I get it yesterday and it clips. Any remotely hot signal and it clips. Is this the internal buffer being overloaded? It clips in bypass as well. Doesn't play nice with my LP and I'm wondering how it's gonna do on my pedalboard with an overdrive through it. I don't recall the dd-5 ever clipping, but maybe I'm wrong. Anyway it ticks me off royally. Right now I'm running the output of a PODxt through it as I had with the dd-5 for years. Little mention of this issue besides a random TGP thread. I hate to have wasted 100 bucks on a pedal I now can't use. I can't imagine there being any mods for these as everything is surface mount.

The punk band ALL that was the really the Decendents when Milo was off being a chemist nerd? They are very underrated and quite melodic. Had forgotten about them for some time

Maybe I'm dense.. what is he getting at? It's a still in production non vintage pedal right? And he's claiming the matching chips warrant the price?

I say if someone wants to drop 2k on a "new" klon, let 'em, it's their money. I could do a very nice little vacation on that dime, but hey. It's like politics. Can't change people's minds. I feel the people who pay 2k for a klon will never have an as enriched and rewarding musical experience as I will with my lonely stock EHX soul food, but I won't hate on them for that. Pity maybe. lol
