Build Reports / Re: Small clone for 1590a in SMD
December 17, 2016, 11:25:45 PM
Finally had time and all parts that were still missing. Finished this small small clone clone tonight and guess what: it works perfectly from the first power on! Of course I first tested the voltage doubler board alone and in combination with the main board without BBD after that. Voltages were as expected: 19.5 V for the main board and 14 V regulated for the clock and MN3007.

I only made one very stupid mistake. The pots are both backwards. Good grief, why didn't I simulate the pot orientation in ltspice...

It was already pretty late when I tested the SC, so tomorrow I will turn up the volume a bit to hear how this one sounds. I really really liked what I heard even on low volume.

Now time to box this one up and work on a revised version with the pots in the right orientation. This remains a WIP...

Sure! But first let's see if they actually work and how everything fits together outside Sketchup  ;)

Haha sure, I'll keep one reserved for you wgc. Any news on the Triple Wreck I sent you yet?

This one looks amazing Felix, inside and out.

Haha not a bad thing, just lousy timing...

Build Reports / Messing around with a fuzz face
November 22, 2016, 12:52:53 PM
After all builds I did this summer, I realised I had not done a fuzz face. Not that I'm that much of a fuzz guy. I usually find them, well to fuzzy... The big muff I did has a flat tone stack and is quite tame for a fuzz and thus sounds more like a fuzzy distortion pedal. I like the Katzenkönig and Lunar module (the latter is on my to do list and boards for them should arrive next week), both of which are more like cross overs between a fuzz and distortion.

So I decided to have some fun and build a fuzz face combined with a diode clipping and gain section on vero (still haven't got a decent breadboard, but it's on my next shopping list). The aim was to get something like a fuzz face into an overdriven Marshall super bass sound. Still experimenting, but in its current form, it actually sounds pretty good. From nicely overdriven tones to thick gnarly fuzz.

Boards are in! But guess what: I'm on a vacation coming week, so soldering time starts first week of December...

Yeah, this one looks absolutely great, inside and out. Would love to know how you did this finish.

Build Reports / 1590a Lunar Module/Srewdriver
November 15, 2016, 11:27:34 PM
It's been a month or so since I finished the Triple Wreck. The concept of mounting everything but the foot switch on one board works really well so far and I'm pretty pleased with that pedal I must say. But my hands started itching again and it was about time to build some pedals again. Meet the Lunar Module/Screwdriver cross over. It can be both or anything in between depending on the component values and transistors used. The first prototype boards are on their way and should arrive first week of december on my doorstep. Ordered 3 of them, so when this one is a succes, two of them will go on sale.

I placed 2 via's awfully close to a power supply trace. Lets hope there is just enough clearance and this little bugger works right away. Fingers crossed...

So, it's finally going to happen: I ordered the boards for the SC, foot switch and the charge pump. Let's hope it works right away. Fingers crossed...

Pm sent. The assembly notes are in the PDF in post 75.

The triple wreck made its debut on a band rehearsal last Thursday. Man that thing sounds just monstrous through a 100 Watt plexi. It is currently on an improvised pedal board.

Just look at how big that Pork Barrel in a 1590b is, not to speak of the power supply in an oversized reused enclosure...

The white pedal is an SMD deep blue delay I housed last week. Worked right from power on. Got a pcb of that one left too...

What do you think WGC, would a BOM, shopping list, schematic and layout be enough to build this pedal? Could you have a look at the PDF I attached? That so far only contains BOM, shopping list and brief description. Schematic and layout (top and bottom) will be added.

Yes, this one can go on sale! I tried it on a '73 super lead and a matching 4x12 with G12H's: monstrous tone. Good God, that's a shit load of lows...

I've got two prototypes left. Those are fully functional, nicely done OSH Park boards, just without a board name printed on them (of course there is a silk screen). I'll place a post in Buy/Sell/Trade about it, but you can also pm me.

Thanks! A huge win indeed. With everything board mounted and spaced like in this build, debugging would be hell... But, no need to debug this time ;D ;D
