Open Discussion / Re: Just Saying -- the soapbox thread

I saw the singer from Live once at a moderately crappy music festival.  He performed a handleful of the old songs to polite applause.  The lead singer of Fuel was also there, doing the same thing.  Whatever is left of Everclear was also there (the singer was very high/drunk and forgot the lyrics to one of his songs).  By contrast, Billy Idol performed at the end of the evening and rocked it.

Yeah, but as you point out a lot of those vital programs can be continued safely.
Definitely.
I can't actually think of any support service that would require or justify opening a school and packing it full of students and teachers.
My children's emotional and social well-being (the buzzwords of hurry-up-and-open) is better served by avoiding exposure to a deadly virus.  I'm ranting again.  Sorry.

Yeah, I was reading something that suggested that the downsides of interrupting childrenís education and development outweigh the chance they could spread Covid. It read like propaganda.
My understanding is that that is connected to the need for support services like nutrition (for some students, school lunch is their only substantial meal) and detecting abuse that could go unspotted if children are keep at home.  As long as schools put plans in place to continue suppprting vulnerable students, then there really isn't a need to open schools for other unnamed "health benefits".

General Questions / Re: Ceramic VS Film
« on: July 09, 2020, 07:00:10 AM »
Generally, choose film caps whenever possible (doesn't matter a whole lot what type of film, as long as it fits your board).  For pF range caps, ceramic are more typical.  If you choose ceramic caps with a NP0 or C0G dielectric, the value will be more stable.

Audio is considered a "general purpose" application for caps, so there are tons of different ones that will work just fine.

If I were any good at Photoshop, I'd turn that pic into and L.L. Bean catalog cover parody, perhaps making the logo "ΛΛ. Bean"

I'm actually at a crossroads in personal grooming.  I feel like I no longer have enough hair at the front of my head to justify spending money on a nice haircut, and it will be a VERY long time before I would be comfortable going somewhere for a professional to cut my hair anyway.  I don't really fancy the idea of a buzz cut or a shaved head though. Guess that leaves me with the Keith Flint Prodigy hairdo as my only option.   :P

Totally agree, I just trim mine up about every 6 months.
Before the pandemic, I used to get a haircut every 5-6 weeks.   ;D

Tomorrow is my five month haircutiversary!
Haven't even had a trim.  It helps that I'm losing hair about as fast as I grow it, but my receding mullet probably looks terrible.  ;D

Also, I haven't used a public restroom since March 15th, although I came close to breaking that streak when I drank coffee on the way to the grocery store two weeks ago.  :o

I have an N95 mask, I think it looks cool. I feel like cobra from GI joe or bane from the Batman series.
Mine make me feel like Chun-Li from Street Fighter 2.  I might also be wearing them wrong though....  ;D

Open Discussion / Re: One knob pedal suggestions please

Any fuzz face variant.  Find the sweet spot in the fuzz control with a trimpot and just have a single knob for output level.

A one-knob squeezer (either an Orange Squeezer or something more sophisticated).

I have been reading articles that suggest a big reason for the increasing numbers is people spreading spreading Covid at family get togethers and small parties. If stuff like that is causing an uptick I think itís time to face the fact that schools wonít be able to safely open next month.
Agreed.  Our city schools are still trying to figure things out.  They've suggested allowing parents to keep their kids home for more remote learning or allowing kids to return on alternating days, which I consider more difficult to manage than keeping them home, especially when I have two kids who wouldn't necessarily have the same at-school days.  I'm imagining my daughter refusing to go to school on her at-school day and yanking her mask off so that I can't safely make her go.  I can't handle that.

Also, as I've said before, my comfort level is at Phase 0, regardless of what reopening phase my state is rushing into.  I'm still on mandatory telework, with the option to enter the office only for a very limited time with express written authorization (highly discouraged).

Seriously, WTF:

Actually, I think it was Ted Yoho, representing Florida of all places.  He has a degree in Veterinary Medicine.

Just to be clear, I would call anyone who refuses to wear a face mask with the justification of "herd immunity" a total asshat.  This has nothing to do with his political views or affiliations.  Also, quarantine fatigue has caused me to have a shorter fuse than normal.  I apologize for using such impolite language in this extremely friendly place. I will try harder to restrain myself in the future.

It seems there's a widespread idea out there that if enough of us get this virus it will just die off and go away. That idea ignores the reality that the more people who get the virus the more potential for mutation and then resurgence, as well as the reality that some people will just never be able to breath the same again after it.
I remember reading about a total asshat walking around the U.S. Capitol Building simply saying "herd immunity" when asked why he refuses to wear a mask.  I think he may even have a medical degree (truly frightening).  I can't remember which state he represents.

I have one of those boards laying around in my random collection.  Maybe I should think about building with it.

I feel like itís only a matter of time before it grows to all of the states again.
It's been in every state constantly for months now, hasn't it?  ??? I mean, I know some governors are better at pretending than others, but still.
