Thanks for your help.  I'm in the middle of double checking everything now.  Hopefully it's just a incorrect resistor value somewhere.

I'm having a problem with my quadrovibe build.  It distorts when I have my guitar's volume turned all the way up, but is clean when I roll the guitar volume back to about half way.  The effect works as it should other than this problem.  I have the same issue if I keep the guitar volume at halfway but have another pedal that adds gain in front of the quadrovibe.  It seems the input is overloading the circuit somewhere.  The distortion is the same no matter where I set the vol, intensity, or speed controls.  I assumed maybe I had the gain trim set too high, but it seems to do it no matter where the gain trim is set, so it must be happening earlier in the circuit.  I was thinking maybe I should try another j201 for q1?  I know they can vary quite a bit.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks.

I did the mod on r15 with a 50k trimmer and that did the trick .  I like being able to adjust the filter a bit more for different sounds as well.  It pretty much nails the mutron filter behavior at about 27 to 31k or so, but i have found some very useful sounds at even lower resistance (15k and up).  Really cool mod.  Thanks Brian and others fo your help.

You may find useful the xlr adapters that have a transformer to go from mic level (lo-z) to hi-z(guitar).  This should clear up most impedance issues, but can limit your headroom a bit.  There are always going to be sound quality issues with this sort of thing, but pedals are designed to destroy or add distortion to your audio most of the time anyway.

Ive seen this done in the link brian provides on the nautilus project page, but i cant remember what the foot pedal controlls.  Its a page about the mutron iii and there's a pic about halfway down the page.  I could see using the sweep or the peak function as a foot pedal.  Not sure which would be best.  Actually, the gain would kinda be cool also.  Maybe i'll make a giant one with three footpedals on it.

I compared my nautilus to a friend's Mu-Tron III from the 70's and it sounded pretty close, but i found that the filter closed a bit slower on the nautilus no matter how i configured it.  Are there any tweaks I can make to change the sensitivity of the filter in this respect?  The best way i can describe it is that while the mutron would say oww, the nautilus would say ooow.  It would remain open longer and wouldnt clamp down quite as hard as it closed.  I know the input gain changes the sensitivity of the filter as well, but even after adjusting the gain on the pedal and the gain of the instrument, I still cant get it to react the same way as the mutron.  I'm wanting to use it specifically with a clavinet to get the sound on stevie wonder's higher ground.  The mutron nails the sound, but i cant quite get it with the nautilus.  It still sounds good, but not the same.  Maybe i am being too picky, but i think it's 90% there and i'm hoping that with a little tweaking, i can get it the rest of the way there.  Any help would be appreciated.

Dick Dale is probably my favorite of the upside down players and one of the only non-blues players I've seen do it well.

Yeah, I remember seeing him in the movie Road House as a kid and thinking "how the hell can someone play guitar if they cant see? " I could see and i couldnt play for crap.  What an incredible guy.

Great job.  I agree that this is one of brians best layouts.  For a pedal i never thought i would be able to build, it was really easy and fun.

Yeah, Eric Gales is a bad ass.  I met him once at a friend's studio here in Memphis.  He's from here and i used to see him sit in with his older brother's band when he was like 15 or 16.  Incredible player and just a really cool dude.  That Albert King style weirds me out every time I see someone do it.  I've tried it and it seems impossible.

My suggestions are:  civil war muff, meathead, fuzzrite (merkin fuzz version), mkiii tonebender, rangemaster (not really a fuzz, but in fuzz territory. My favorite pedal ever.)

Yeah, i've noticed the kits could be sourced for much cheaper just by using mouser and other sites.  One site was charging 25 bucks for four gain matched FET's that they probably paid a nickel for.  But if you're building transformer based pre's like neves and api's, you definitely don't want to skimp on the transformers.  Just like with guitar amps.  But there are alot of great sources for transformers also.  With a little research, you could realistically hundreds of dollars. 

Does anyone have any experience with any of the diy mic pre kits out there, i.e. 51x, five fish, seventh circle, classic api, paia, etc.

I'm looking into building a 51x rack or buying an api lunchbox and possibly starting off with a couple of classic api vP26's. 

Has anyone tried to build one of these or anything from another source.
