General Questions / Re: Kingslayer Fat Switch

One quick tone note:  I pulled C7 from mine this evening, and was surprised to find my apparent gain level was actually lower in "fat" mode.  That's a benefit in my case, but might not be for everyone, so thought it was worth noting.  Also, because it's such a low gain circuit, I don't find the extra bass to be too boomy at all, at least at moderate output levels.  YMMV, of course.

Do you need to add a jumper, or can you just totally omit c7?

You don't need a jumper

I think sticking with omitting C7 is the right thing. Or, you could put in a 1uF there which would probably have the same effect (since it would pass frequencies). I would leave R10 alone.

Awesome, thanks man

Thanks, Brian.  Appreciate that explanation.

I may try that first, just to see what I get.  I normally run this at very low gain settings, so I'm not too worried about it getting overly beefy by allowing all frequencies through the gain circuit.

If I was to try tweaking what is allowed through, is R10 the best place to start?  Nothing is currently socketed, but that's no issue.  Any advice appreciated.  :)

Sorry to dig up an old post, but this is something I've been looking at, too.  I'm in the same situation as a lot of folks in that I don't notice much difference with the 'fat' switch in or out, and would like even more low end available.  Did you try socketing C7, or did you just leave it off for good?

These pedals are killer, and the pics don't even do them justice.  Jon, as most of us know, does excellent work, and he made my life easy in getting these done for me while I'm over my head with work right now.

The Afterlife replaces my 4 knob Keeley comp clone, which I never got along with, for some reason.  Liking it a lot better so far, but haven't taken it through its full paces yet.

The Uproar/Riot is my "I need a good pedal to keep in my gig bag in case I have to play without the rest of my gear" pedal, and that's why I had Jon put a battery clip in it (the sock was a surprise  :D ).  Actually liking that pedal more than I thought I would.

The Boneyard is my favorite pedal design to date, and this is my second one.  The first was built "stock" based on the first version of Brian's schem, and is my main mid-to-high gain box for gigging.  I had a few tweak ideas for this one, and Jon was able to implement almost all of them.  The Fat Pants in here is genius, and beats the heck out of the standard boost in the Boneyard.  Running a stand-alone buffer on the front of my board got rid of the whine from the circuit, since the included buffer isn't killing it, for some unknown reason.  It's currently loaded with a TL047 op amp, which is a sub, but is very close to my older unit with the suggested LF347.  I actually ordered a few MC33079s to try, as I've read that they are another notch up in terms of clarity even than the 347.  The jury is still out on that, but I'll report back if it seems like a major improvement.

Once things calm down a bit, I'll try to do some clips, too.  Cheers!

Also, for the guys that do buy from Tayda, what is on your "avoid list" that you won't buy from them?

There's at least two threads recently about this. Multiple pages. Just do a search for Tayda.

Didn't look before I posted, sorry!
Here's one of them, for anyone else interested:

Oh yeah, I didn't mean the links.  I meant more the "I prefer to get part x from this supplier because..." responses that were given.  That's of way more use to the novice or beginner than most of the better builders probably realize.  ;)

This info is great, and might be worth creating a "sticky" post for it, since I can't be the only one asking these questions.  Thanks guys!

These are really great answers, guys, thanks!  I had looked at Paul's store months ago, but wasn't sure if he carried what I would need.  Worth another look, now that I know what I'm wanting to build.  I'll definitely run with a few of these ideas and let you know if I have other questions.  Thanks again!

Hey guys,

Kind of a stupid question, but what is your preferred supplier and why?  I have about half a dozen partially done pedals sitting here (a couple compressors, an Uproar, a Boneyard, and a few others) that I haven't gotten to work on for a couple years due to life stuff going on.  I went through my available components and will need to place a reasonable-sized order to get everything to finish them (including enclosures, switches, etc.).  I'd prefer to get everything from one supplier, if possible.  I've ordered from Mouser in the past, and at least once from Mammoth.  Good experiences from both, but thought I'd just toss this out there to see what everyone prefers before I make my next order.  Tayda hasn't gotten much on here love due to quality of some of their stuff, though I have no experience with them.

Anyway, thanks for any and all thoughts!
