Thatís insane. Is there a way to avoid toll roads?

There always is. Until now, it was always better to pay the tolls to save the added time. Now, it may just be worth the extra few hours  ::)

By who?

That would be the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission. Collectors for the toll roads.

They don't have people working the toll booths anymore. It is all automated. Go through the toll booth and it snaps a pic of your license plate and they bill you. Got 2 separate bills. One for the trip there. One for the trip back.

Bill #1 = $46.70
Bill #2 = $33.60

That is just RIDICULOUS!

Don't know how many of you fine people reside in the state of Pennsylvania but, I hope you are all getting serious kick-back checks!

Just got billed for a 290-mile round trip car ride through the state on the Turnpike. Total cost = $81  :o

For those that don't want to bother with the calculator, that would be $0.27 per mile!

I don't remember seeing any gold in them roads!

It's funny, we're in the same state, and in a couple dozen orders I've never had to wait more than 5 days from when I place the order to it being on my doorstep.

Maybe you're on someone's shitlist.

It is possible  ;D

I have ordered from Steve about 5 times since I have been building. First order was quick! Every other order had to be followed with at least 1 or 2 emails asking when they will go out the door. And this wasn't like 1, 2, or 3 days after ordering. Usually waited about a week before emailing. Shipment always seemed to follow the emails though so maybe they just got lost in the shuffle. Or, maybe it was just because I wasn't a constant source of ordering?

I placed three orders since the announcement.  I emailed them asking to merge the orders to save on shipping, and they responded the next day telling me the merged orders were ready for packing and would go out with the next scheduled mail drop.  No automatic order status email saying that though.  Generally, 14 days from my payment is the max I've ever had to wait for a Smallbear order to arrive.  I'm fine with that, but I understand not everyone would be.

Meh.. This is not the first time. On a previous order, I waited about 10 days before emailing them and it was then that they told me that my order would go in the mail that day. Any others after that, I have had to email them a few days after the order to get them to act on it.
I deal with vendors on a daily basis for work so I know how it goes... unfortunately.

EDIT: I guess they saw my email. Got a shipping notice a minute ago  :o

Reluctantly, I placed an order the day after the announcement was made about the retirement. Only place I could get the smaller chicken head knobs in the colors I wanted.

That was a week ago and still no word on what the status is.  :-\

Unfortunately, this is why I hardly ever ordered from them in the past. Almost every order I placed I had to email them and "prod" them to get my items out in the mail. Looks like its time for another email  :-[

PSA for those that travel and book through 3rd parties......

I booked a family vacation hotel stay apparently through a 3rd party (I was linked to it via the hotel website without knowing) and received what I thought was a decent price for the entire hotel stay. Upon departing the hotel on the last day, I was given a printed receipt for my stay. Funny thing was, the total on the receipt from the hotel was exactly $372 LESS than what I paid  >:( After WEEKS of back-and-forth communication with the booker and hotel, I discovered that the 3rd party had added the extra expense as "Taxes and Fees" even though their policy stated that they only charge a $14.99 booking fee. Also learned that the hotel was NOT supposed to give me a receipt. Now I know why.

Currently have a BBB claim against them and awaiting mediation.

Bottom line... ALWAYS get a hotel receipt when you check out and compare that to what you paid (if booked via a 3rd party)

I guess we just need to give Steve a call and ask for source of the parts. In case in the future, we will order the parts. At least we know where to go. But again, if heís going to provide us with some directions.

Someone on FB emailed Steve to ask about sources and he had this response:

"The vendor information and part numbers are part of my intellectual capital. What I suggest to customers who are looking for a new source is that they do the homework I did."

I was already thinking about asking about their source for pot dust covers since I use them for all my kits - they fit better than Tayda's. So this was pretty disappointing to see, since he hasn't given any other indication that he plans on capitalizing on his intellectual property (i.e. selling the business including supplier lists). Based on the information he's shared, the inference is that he's just going to leave customers stranded if they were dependent on parts that only SBE sells.

I hope it's just bad miscommunication on his part and there's more news to come. But SBE's relationship with the DIY community goes both ways. He's been a great part of it, legendary even, but we've also given him his job for 20 years, so this is not a great way to close out an otherwise impeccable career.

I also hope that someone picks up the mantle and continues to provide to the DIY community in such a manner. That being said....

Many have depended on Steve for their builds and he provided an invaluable service however, I had done my research and that is why I probably placed about 4 orders with SBE in about 15 years.

Didn't Steve announce that he was selling stock until it was all gone? If this is the case then I would expect that he may not be planning to sell off the business to someone else rather that he is just getting out of it. Still very sad for the DIY community.

That is the one board I really wish DEFX would have located the wiring closer to the stomps like all their other PCBs.

Easier said than done Greg.  Although that was laid out some time ago, perhaps I'll revisit it and see if I can improve it

I do not doubt that it is a big ask. You guys keep pushing the boundaries on good projects. It is what it is and it doesn't stop them from being awesome!  ;)

Thats a nice build there!

Are you having any issues with knob collisions? Looks like the spacing is quite close  :o

General Questions / Re: Changing pot values
« on: September 14, 2021, 04:44:25 AM »
First... Welcome!

Second, for the pot question, it really depends on you. You can try to use substitute pot values however, you may not receive the desired output or "reaction" that you are looking for. Usually, it is best to stick with the listed value.

As for the capacitor question, a good general rule of thumb is +/- 10%. As long as you stay within 10% of the value you should be good. Since 2.2nF is within the 10% range it should be just fine!

Good Luck  ;D

Open Discussion / Re: Anyone else get the Covid Vaccine?
« on: September 03, 2021, 08:59:07 AM »
I'm just going to put this on here and then I will have nothing more to say on the matter.

I am not for or against vaccination. I believe it is a personal choice. Get it. Don't get it. Its up to you. That being said, lets look at what has transpired so far. Regardless of excuses:

1) Shut everything down and social distance with masks to be worn everywhere - Didn't stop it
2) Vaccinations for everyone - Didn't stop it.
3) Now the plan is to go back to Step 1?

This thing is mother nature. You cannot stop mother nature period. Anyone who thinks otherwise is fooling themselves.

END RANT (if it is one)
