It's been on the enclosure 72 hours and feels pretty hard.  Will it just peel off with pressure?  Will I end up having to sand it down?
With as cheap as Tayda enclosures are (I used a polished bare box) I might just start over if it's a pain.

I'm planning on my first envirotex enclosure and I've applied the waterslide decal.  Will I benefit from buying some Micro Sol or will the envirotex make irrelevant?

Open Discussion / Which copper clad?

I'm placing an order with Tayda tonight.  They have 6x6 pieces.  Either Phenolic or Epoxy FR4.  If I'm etching boards with acid which do I want?

Open Discussion / Where to source these Knobs
February 05, 2014, 08:53:55 PM
I have a Ross Distortion that I am modding. It was a gift to me and came without knobs.  Would these be D-Type shafts on the pots?  If so, who carries them?  Couldn't find them on Tayda, Mammoth, SmallBear or Pedalpartsplus.  Doesn't mean they aren't there though.

Open Discussion / DIY Pedalboard and Case
February 05, 2014, 08:08:30 AM
Funds are limited and making stuff is fun:) Got the hard shell suitcase at Goodwill for $5. There was a larger one (double the size) for $12 but wanted to keep it reasonable.  Scrap wood and nails from the garage $0. Need to get some elastic to secure the wah and volume pedal in the top.  May also secure the pedal board the same.  Currently my signal chain is:
Engineer's Thumb Comp>RC Boost Clone>Klon (Sunking)>Eternity OD clone>BYOC Rat>Multiplex Echo>Biyang Reverb>BYOC Boost.
As much fun as this was, I plan to give it to my son eventually and splurge for a pedaltrain or similar board with isolated power supply:)

My son wants and OD pedal.  We recently built MB Sprout Fuzz and he is pumped.  I'm looking at the Sparkplug VS Green Bean.  I've poured through the forums looking at both which has confused me.  I was interested in the Sparkplug because it's not a TS;) Saw some reports of 'fizziness' in the decay of the SP.  Was this resolved in the revision?  Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Open Discussion / Modded Biyang RV-8 Reverb
January 31, 2014, 08:44:01 PM
Picked it up for $20.  Really decent sound when in the vintage mode.  Problem was there was a significant volume drop.  Built up a EHX LPB-1 with trimmer on vero and with the help of fine folks here, have it running at unity!  Stoked that I can access the trimpot through the battery compartment, you know, in case I want to crank the volume and use the pedal for a cavernous solo or some other nutty business.  This would be my first mod to a factory pedal.

Open Discussion / Need help - Biyang FootSwitch
January 31, 2014, 05:58:12 PM
So I am attempting to insert a boost after the effect but can't figure out what goes where on the switch.  I used an audio probe to determine the wet signal to be at 7 and 9 on switch (if I have my numbering correct).

456
789

I plan to cut the trace on the switch and splice in the boost if I can figure out which direction (ie out from the board TO out to the plug).

Open Discussion / Need boost recommendation
January 30, 2014, 08:31:08 PM
I picked up a Biyang RV-8 reverb unit for $20.  The spring reverb in the 'b' setting really sounds nice.  Problem is there is a significant (to my ears) drop in volume.  I was thinking of adding a simple clean boost with trim pot to set it and forget it to get the volume to unity.
Any recommendations?

Build Reports / MB Quasar
January 29, 2014, 03:04:01 PM
Learned a lot on this build:  Don't try and spray paint in 25 degree weather (bubbles and uneven coatings), don't get the water too warm for the water slide stretching and buckling), it's easy to break the traces on an etched board when putting pressure on the pot wires (destroyed two, notice the wire soldered to the diode, there is another jump underneath).
Good news: it works...first try!

Open Discussion / Quasar Question (C1)
January 26, 2014, 07:43:51 PM
I messed up ordering.  I didn't order C1 - 47nF.  Can I substitute another value or is this a critical value.  I've socketed the PCB at that point so that I can hopefully test the circuit and replace the cap with the appropriate value when I get it.
So, can I jump it with a wire just to test? I have an extra 100nF I could use.
Thanks for any help!

I'm including the Quasar PDF

Trying to ground the electronics to the back of the bridge but solder won't 'stick'.  Using a 20W iron.  Do I need something more significant or is there another issue?

Picked up a Dunlop Crybaby Wah for $25.  Is the Weener Wah II the way to go or should I consider other options?

Build Reports / MB Sprout
January 19, 2014, 07:42:01 PM
My 11 year old helped me populated and 'paint' the enclosure.  He was a little afraid of the solder iron but I was real proud, he made some healthy joints.
He was a little upset with the art work.  Wrote his Z's backwards.  It's now the Behold the Fuss instead of Fuzz.
Also, the bit ripped the bottom of the enclosure by the DC jack.
My son and I are stoked, bottom line.

Also, it was my first 1590A.

I bought my first guitar/amp used for $75.  The guitar was a Harmony Strat copy and a Gorilla GG-20.  2 months later my 'good' friend came back and said the amp wasn't his to sell and needed it back.  So, I sold it back to him.  In the early days I never could find an amp that I liked as much.  So, 23 years later I finally have another Gorilla - $15.  This one has built in chorus that actually sounds pretty dang good.  BTW,  I may have romanticized the memory of the sound I got those first few months but in reality, this amp can really sound pretty good.  Crank the volume all the way, add a little 'Tube Stack' and you get some wicked crunch/distortion.  Poor little 6.5" speaker.  I'm loving it!

Open Discussion / Sunking Help!!
January 15, 2014, 12:55:24 PM
I desoldered a blown diode (D3) and the solder pad came of on the cathode side.  Looking at the build document, it looks like that pad delivers power to the rest of the circuit.  I soldered the new diode (cathode) directly to the 9v+.  How do I ensure power to the rest of the board with this pad missing?!

Here is a link to the document:

Open Discussion / Trade for a 'Broken' Kingslayer?
January 14, 2014, 06:16:40 AM
Guy listed a broken MB Kingslayer on CL.  Said he let a friend borrow it and it came back not working and the friend won't return his calls.  I'm relatively new to pedal building (9 builds under my belt).  Am I wrong in thinking this should be a doable fix?  I am supposing he either plugged in a  power supply with the wrong polarity or maybe plugged in an 18v power supply.  In either case, wouldn't it just be a matter of replacing a few components.  Or am I asking for it.

Open Discussion / MB Sprout Artwork
January 11, 2014, 09:16:36 AM
My 11 year old wants to build a pedal so I etched a MB Sprout and ordered the parts.  I asked my son to think about what artwork he would like.  Without hesitation he says 'A severed Hello Kitty head impaled.'  Should I be concerned?  Maybe too Lord of the Rings.

There is a stock Vox Wah on CL for $30.  Seems like a good price for like new condition.  Is it worth the $?  Would definitely be interested in modding it.  Any recommended mods if I do this?
Draw back is I haven't really missed having a Wah since I sold mine back in 1992!

Open Discussion / Amp Footswitch LED.

Stupid question. But how does a passive amp foot switch LED get its power?
