General Questions / Total Recall Compander Question
July 21, 2017, 05:29:28 AM
I built the Total Recall (plan to do a build report soon) and it is a superb project.  Kudos to Mr. Madbean:)
I have a question about the compander.  I was unable to find the NE570 at Smallbear so I ordered the "equivalent" Coolaudio V571D.  Any draw back here?  I'm hearing a decent amount of hiss that accompanies the repeats and disappears when the repeats fade which I assume is a result of the work the compander is doing.  Is it worth pursuing the original NE570 chip or will it have a similar noise level?

Thanks!

I swear I did a search before I asked!  I'm going to blame it on the Tapatalk app rather than user error;)

Scruffier that seems like a logical theory.

Out of a batch of 20 1% resistors each I found the right value. Just use your multimeter to find the right ones
You had better luck than I did.  All my 24k resistors were right at 24.0x.  My 33k resistors were at 32.8-33.1.
I plugged the values in the non inverting op amp gain calculator and it doesn't seem to be a huge deal.  Was hoping someone would confirm my suspicions or rebuke me before I started soldering;)

General Questions / Total Recall Resistor value
July 07, 2017, 08:41:45 PM
I'm preparing to build the Total Recall.  The BOM calls for a 24k3 and 33k2.  I thought I had ordered carbon film resistors (5%) of the values 24k and 33k and planned on finding values close.  Apparently I didn't do a good job of ordering.  Looking at the schematic though, R23 and R24 don't look too critical if I use a 24k and 33k (1% Metal Film) Resistor.  Looks like they are responsible for setting gain and rc filter for IC3.  I only ask because those values are so specific.  Want to make sure I'm not missing something!
Thanks,
Phillip

Open Discussion / Re: Anyone been to/in Osaka?

I'm going there for the first time end of Sept.  Going for a church mission trip.  Our band is going to play music in the parks and do a concert at the end of the week.  We have some built in "tourist time" but mainly we'll be playing classic "American music".  I'm totally stoked.  I can ask my buddy whose been before to recommend a few places and report back if he gives me anything;)

I've got a gibson 490 's in my SG that rip!
I had those in an HH strat and loved them!

I like the pup swap idea.  Quite possibly the hardest thing to shop for guitar wise.

$138 for the Nordstrand is approaching the $150 I have invested in the whole guitar.
In all honesty, $35 for a GFS makes more monetary sense but I hate spending money on mediocre gear and regretting it when it doesn't meet my needs/wants.
That said, I watched a 3 pickup blind shootout on YouTube and I picked the GFS:/
I also wanted to give Timbo_93631 a shoutout, he wound me some strat pickups a couple years ago that were exactly what I asked for and I'm still really digging them today.  I'm not sure he winds humbuckers though...I sent him a PM and will report back for those interested in his Sundaywound pickups.

Ralfg, I want a full size I think.  I had a single sized JB jr in the past.  It sounded good, but not like a full sized imo.
*off to google Nordstrand

Thanks GermanCdn.  So you think a 10-11k will balance output wise with a 6k middle and neck?
Also, is trembucker spacing worth insisting on?  I had a HH strat that I used Gibson spaced buckers in and sounded great...but I never compared them directly to a properly spaced humbucker
