Looks great.  There is beauty in simplicity sometimes, and this box nails it.

Freehand with a very very very fine paintbrush, Testors gloss black enamel paint, and held breath and hushed prayers.

Build Reports / Super Whitey
August 26, 2013, 04:59:43 AM
Deep in the woods, a population of squirrels can rest easy knowing that evil will not show its face around their neighborhood...not when Super Whitey is around.  Super Whitey, while not fully understood or accepted by the public, uses his super AUTO WAH powers to filter out crime and ne'er-do-wells from his sleepy burg.

Nobody is sure if Super Whitey is a true albino or not.  It is said that you can tell true albinism by their pink eyes, but only criminals get that close to his vengeful gaze, and by then, it is too late...

This was fun.  Got the PCB from guitarpcbs.com during the BOGO sale.  Put it in a 125b.  Instead of the internal trimpot, I added an external pot for frequency control.  It creates so much of a change in effect, I wonder why guitarpcbs.com decided against using it.  As you can see, the knobs are a little short...I will fix that sometime.  No major problems with this build; it rocked quite well before I boxed it.  I am now 2 for 2 in the successful build department.  I would love to continue this roll, but I might have to take a hiatus for a bit...have to save my pennies for an upcoming anniversary, birthday, Christmas, etc...

FWIW, my C8 is the same as dropanchor's. The parts were either mislabeled or misordered, and we were to dopey to double check. My pedal works fine.

Eldanko, I highly recommend you get to this build!  It is very attack sensitive.  I tend to strum and pluck with my fingers, but when I use a pick with this pedal, it really distorts.  The tone knob is real subtle; you might want to look into using a different pot value or something.  It does the trick for me, but one of my friends was asking if the tone even worked.

Build Reports / First Guitar Build

While pryde set the bar super high with their 000 acoustic build (from scratch!), this feels feeble in comparison, but I am quite proud of my first electric build.  Here ya go...

I started putting this together in February.  I picked up the body, pickguard, and most of the hardware from Warmoth.  The body is alder, and I added a neck contour for better access to the higher frets that I will rarely use.  I stained the body with a red mahogany stain from Lowes.  The binding is actually not binding but unstained wood, similar to PRS style guitars.  The trouble with the Warmoth body though was that the edges were rounded off, preventing me from just using masking tape.  Instead, I picked up some liquid latex from a hobby store and using masking tape and a little freehand, I painted the stripe with a paintbrush.  After it dried, I stained the body a few times and then peeled off the latex.  The outer layer is nitro.  Some parts of the "binding" are uneven, but you will never see those pics.  The pickups are Seymour Duncan vintage stacks, and I coil tapped them using a push-push volume knob so I can get a raw Tele single coil sound.  There is a middle pickup cavity underneath the pickguard for the day when I get a wild hair to embrace my inner Bret Mason.  The neck was purchased from olivewoodguitars on ebay.  I was wary of buying a neck on ebay, but it ended up being extremely nice for under $150.

There are plenty of flaws in the finish, but overall, it looks and sounds great.

Gorgeous build!  I'd be timid to tackle this even if it was a kit!  It's on my building bucket list to put together an acoustic...maybe a tenor guitar or something. One day when my workspace consists of more than my kitchen table!  I love the attention to the detail work that you put into this.

I biased the transistors at 12v, and the pedal seems to work fine.  I might drop the voltage just a smidge for a little more gain.  One thing I noticed was that the tone knob doesn't change the sound at all when I turn it.  I might have a bad connection between the pot and pcb, or the pot itself might be bad.  Is it possible for the circuit to still produce sound if the tone knob is not connected right?

Being that I live in Kentucky, bourbon can be found all around the area. My decently priced fave I Woodford Reserve, but you can get a good bang for your buck with Buffalo Trace, Maker's Mark, or Larceny.

Sometimes it is all about finding a cheap one that is good. My dad burned a hole in his wallet solely drinking Woodford, so he switched to Very Old Barton and swears that it isn't too far off from Makers.

General Questions / Re: Ross distortion
July 11, 2013, 01:03:40 AM
I have one of these. My dad bought it new, and then I took it from him when I was a teen.  I have the box and sticker that camewith it. I would crack mine open and let you know, but it is stashed in a box in my closet somewhere (My wife thought it would be a good idea to have a nursery instead of a music room.  Who knew?). From memory, I would have to agree with the previous posters that it is a ground wire to the input jack.

The Ross distortion is an interesting pedal. Wooly for a distortion, not wooly enough for a monstrous fuzz tone. It will suck tons of tone though when off. The original jack is weird by today's standards. If you want to put a new one in, go for a more contemporary jack, but check on the polarity first.

Thanks for the advice. I, in fact, do own a multimeter. I used it on the test pads on the pcb and measured the bias at 12v, I was just curious if anybody has tried tweaking those numbers a bit.

Build Reports / First Build, The Supro
July 10, 2013, 04:21:17 AM
Recently, dropanchor812 asked me (in real life), "Deux yeux want to build a cool overdrive pedal instead of buying a neux JHS Superbolt?"  And I was like, "Deux I!  How deux we deux that, deuxde?"  And then he said, "We build the Supreaux Deux!"  With that, I will cease the "-euxs;"  I don't want to get booted off the forum with my first post for being annoying.

Without further ado (aren't you glad I didn't write 'adeux!'), I present...THE SUPRO.

I believe the pcb came from OftenFX.  Most of the parts came from Mammoth.  The guts are a little sloppy. Being my first build, I am not quite economical with wires, but the slop does provide a barrier so the populated board doesn't touch anything to short it out.  For the logo, I designed it on paper, made a stencil out of it, and after I sprayed it, I fine tuned it by scraping the enamel with a toothpick and using a brush to reapply if needed.  I sprayed a clear enamel over this for protection, but I still managed to create a nasty scrape with a wayward pair of pliers.  ALWAYS COVER YOUR DECALS DURING ASSEMBLY TO PREVENT DAMAGE!!!

I was worried for a day because I wasn't getting any sound out of it, but after twiddling around and biasing the transistors, it works marvelously.  This fits perfectly with the Tele that I just built.  I might fiddle with the trim pots a little more.  For those of you with this pedal, do have any suggestions for the trimmers?
