Thanks selfdestroyer. Good info here. I also 100% agree with you on small bears website. I'll have to check out BLMS. They sound pretty reputable.

Open Discussion / Parts sourcing
January 15, 2014, 05:39:05 PM
Hey Guys,
Kind of a newb and I have a few questions for you regarding parts sourcing. I've been using Tayda and Pedal Parts Plus for most stuff but I wanted to get some of your perspectives. I've noticed some of the parts I got form Tayda were junk and of lesser quality. I want to try and get away from using them but don't have a ton of money to throw around. Pedal Parts Plus I had no problems with they were just a bit expensive. So, here are some questions...

1. Who do you use for 3PDT and other switches?
2. Who do you use for passives, ICs,and transistors?
3. Who is the best quality with the lowest price?
4. Who gives the best hugs around here? (LOLZ just kidding)

Thanks for the feedback guys! Always helpful!

OK I guess I'll weigh in now. I both agree and disagree with the whole Tayda making boards thing.
We all should have seen this coming. I say "we" lightly because I've only been building for about a year and modding for 2. Tayda knows that most of their clients are pedal builders and about a month or two ago (maybe longer) they started asking for people to submit projects they use the parts on. I personally didn't submit anything because I didn't want them to take my design. Plus I work a lot with vero/strip board and didn't think they wanted that.  Also they are in the market to make money. They don't care what product they put as long as it sells (take a look at their ceramic capacitors for example). That's why most of the components they sell are of the fecal persuasion. The boards are probably going to fall into the crap category as well. The one up that we have on them (not including quality) is the community aspect. I've said it before but I don't know how many times I have turned to this forum, specifically, for tech help. If there is ever an issue whit a MB build or any other pedal related thing there are 30 or 40 people that know the answer and are always willing to help. They will be far from that kind of support. for example: I got an order from them over the weekend and there were 4 small issues with it, I have yet to hear back from them. I could post a tech question on this forum and have 10 answers and things to try in 20 min. So, Them making boards has no affect on me because i personally wouldn't order one from them. I can understand they want to make money but that's all they care about. They don't have a passion for it like us.

Tech Help - Projects Page / Re: Smoothie build question

Being kind of a newbie myself I have learned to double and triple check my capacitor polarities. I've made this mistake and tortured my self for hours over it. I also double check my resistor values before soldering too. Maybe that's my OCD. As for your build everything looks OK just check those out and makes sure everything is good. I would also look at the soldering and make sure nothing is bridged.

Mods / Looking For Ideas...

Hey Guys,
Yesterday I ordered 2 boards. I got the Smoothie and the Afterlife. Any mod Ideas on either of these? Thanks in advance.

Nice Etch. I would make the traces a bit thicker and the pads a bit bigger. I've been kicking around the idea of doing one with the LED and Resistor places.

This is the one I use. I've had it for a few years now. Works great! They recently came out with a smaller one, Thinking about grabbing one. This one cost me like $15. I had a cheapo from EBAY but that one was terrible. I suggest a slodapult. They Rule!!!

Yikes! That seems expensive. It's not really a company. I joke around and call it a "non profit organization". Not looking to make $bank$ but just get paid for parts and a little labor. Do i just trade mark the name?

Thanks Paul. I have found this forum to be completely invaluble. Some times i don't even have to ask the question i just do a search and find all my answers. I think when bean get back I'll grab one of those "pork barrels" off him.
