Good call.

The pads at one end look like boss.

I like it.  It doesn't do all the tricks the Mutrons do but it has a lot more character than the EHX's and the MXR.  This is the first one I've kept on my board and I use it for the odd triggered filter sweeps as well as a cocked wah for solos.

Build Reports / Re: Lab Series L5 preamp in a pedal
June 01, 2016, 07:14:02 PM
L5 is up and running.  I need to chase down an intermittent solder joint and I totally missed the fact that the voltage regs mount face down instead of face up (so the tabs fit over the diodes...duh...) but other than that it was a long drawn out build that fired up nicely.  I haven't messed around setting the trimmers yet, I was too busy screwing around with it.  It feels like the real thing and I can't wait to get my real L5 home to compare them.

I'll order an enclosure this week so I can get it boxed up.  I haven't been this excited about a pedal in a very long time.  It is a very serious commitment in terms of build time and money but no more so than building 3 or 4 of the boards we normally deal with. If you've successfully done a Laserwolf or any of the Bean big boards this is on par.  Just BIG.

Just an insane amount of work had to go into laying this thing out and major kudos to Aion for all the effort.

The clean blend on the 4:1 makes it pretty cool for bass.  It's become the mainstay on my guitar pedal board and doesn't sound as squishy as the Dyna/Ross variants.  It's pretty much a "is this thing on?" type of compressor.  I use it mostly to fatten up clean sounds.  It's also really quiet.

First builds? Man they look nicer than my current builds :-)

Nicely done. I really like the chorus. It's cool in that it's so good looking but also can't really be duplicated.

Agreed. I installed a Babicz bridge on a buddy's strat and even if it doesn't change the tone the precision and attention to detail go way beyond mojo.

Better a cork-sniffer than a cork-soaker I always say...

I like to think that it's our discipleship to educate the masses and spread the truth.  Ahhhh screw it, make a buck :-)

Great score.  I love the look of painted headstocks.  Adds a nice touch of class.  It's pretty tough to beat a Daphne blue guitar so a double score really.  Have fun with it.

the best mod I ever did to improve the sound of an MT2 was selling the pedal to someone else  ;)

Got a laugh out of that one.

Nice work, I'm glad you posted that. There's nothing like pulling a nice curl with a well set up plane. The smooth feel of it and all those smells coming from the wood.

I'm really looking forward to this one.  My old beater L5 is my main live rig so it will be cool to be able to A/B.  This is an insane amount of work to lay this thing out, but thanks for the time and effort!

One that hasn't been mentioned that I've used since it's original Shareware days is PaintShop Pro.  Corel owns it now and it's a nice (and much cheaper) PhotoShop wanna be with a few tricks of it's own.  Opens PSD files with layer structure intact.

Hard to beat the free CS2 as well.
