For what its worth, I'm getting the same white noise -- but It decreased SIGNIFICANTLY when I tried another PT2399. I think I'll still try changing some of these cap values to help reduce, but I read somewhere that PT2399 can sometimes have a hiss issue, and that did make a big difference.

Ok, I've been using Kester "44" rosin-core solder for a long time. But at times when I'm building a project with a white pcb or some other color, I'm not too pleased at the yellow resin that is left behind.

Do any of you use anything to clean it up? i've tried rubbing alcohol, but it seems to just spread around making the whole board sticky.

Is there a better solder to be used? I'd like my joints to be cleaner overall.

Tech Help - Projects Page / Taptation wierdness

Hey all!

Ok, so first time with the taptation chipset. I'm feeding into a de profundis, and it sounds great. The ony problem I get is tapping is somewhat funky... If I take too long to tap, it switches into basically 0ms delay (scale LED goes solid). Overall tapping seems a bit hit and miss. Is that normal for this thing? I've tried 3 different taptation chips, 3 different digital pots, and 3 different pt2399's. Same result with all. When I do get a good tap, the PT2399 is really close to the lighted tempo.

Help!

+1 on the burrs. Also, Sometimes after the water dries out the puckering will naturally stretch itself out. Use a good decal softener to help it adhear well and a piece of hard rubber works great as a squeegee...

Just to clarify, I'm basically going to put 4 rotaries, two in each opposing path (so you could go symmetrical with single device on each side, assymetrical or two devices in series one ach side), with a switchable pot for clip softening and a block to put a capacitor into. Should be fun. Mainly I'm looking for specific component names  -- what are your go-to favorites? If you're doing si or germ, what's your favorite?

General Questions / Suggestions for Clipping Diodes

I'm putting together a PCB that will allow me to dial in various clipping options in a typical symmetrical or asymmetrical clipping path. Also thinking about offering this as a project for sale to the community when I get it done.

I'm hoping you guys can throw some diode suggestions out there... I'm thinking about having 10 different positions for each diode in the path.

1n34a, bat 41, bat 46, etc....

Thanks Brian,

6k8 still got me the squeal but the 10k did the trick. I was feeling like maybe it was an issue with one of my components, because previous versions I've built with the exact same components didn't have this problem, or maybe I just didn't notice it ;).

Ok, so I've built 4 now all with the same issue (after having built many before with no squeal!). If I turn down the tone to 3 o'clock (about 75%) it cuts out. Same if I pull the 5n6 from the tone stack. W

1. the squeal is kind of a high-pitched whistle that stays at a constant frequency.
2. Pulling and replacing the zener had no effect on the squeal.
3. Tested both ICs in a known working box, and they are fine.
4. With an audio probe, I get squeal on all of the opamp outputs.
5. I don't get any squeal on pins 1 and 2 of the tone control, but I do on pin 3.
5. The squeal only happens with my telecaster, but not with my gretsch (with tvjones pickups).

It seems the only way to get rid of the squeal is to pull out the frequencies, but I'd rather not do that :)

What should I check next?

Ok, So I just put together another Kingslayer -- and I'm getting a crazy squeal when I max out the gain settings (i.e. OD clipping on, turn up the gain and the tone or the volume) and I get a high-pitched squeal over the top of everything. other than that it works as expected.

I realized that accidentally used a 7660SCPA instead of a 1044, so I swapped it out, but no change. Is it possible that the 7660 damaged something? Should I replace the TL274 and the zener diode?

So I was thinking it'd be nice to have the OD switch as a seperate stomp, sort of as a second stage. If I wanted to make the level of the clipping adjustable, could I just add a 100K linear pot to bleed the clipping to ground?
