How Do I? Beginner's Paradise. / Re: Why logarithmic pots?
September 11, 2012, 03:56:09 AM
Because sound isn't the same as electricity.

Basically, our ears hear logarithmically, they don't hear things linearly. For instance, it takes 10 times the power to get twice the volume. So a 100 watt amp is twice as loud as a 10 watt amp, not 10 times louder. If it were linear, it would be 10 times louder.

So, when we build pedals, we use A value pots for things like Gain and Master volume because that's how our ears work.

At this point, it sounds like you're doing the right things. The problem is that you're getting sound, so it's hard to find the point where it goes bad.

Keep working the steps. Voltages may help us look for things. Good pictures of both sides of the PCB would let us double check things for you as well.

First thing I'd suspect is either a wrongly labled part, or that you've put the wrong part value in place (i.e, 10K instead of 100K).

I too admire the approach to clipping Jon. I'll have to talk with you sometime about all the experimenting you've been doing!

That looks stellar Scott, I'm slightly envious.

Requests / Re: Reverse Reverb

Reverse reverb is some computer trickery in a studio. Otherwise, it's like reverse delay and requires more power computer control than the average DIY pedal uses.

Trimpots are non directional. Pins 1 and 3 don't matter really. Put it in so it fits, you'll be good to go.

If it's the one I saw in the build reports, it's either not the same as mine or it looks different in the light you had. This colour is brand new, they didn't have a picture up on the website yet when I ordered it.

Today, I had packages waiting for me:

CJ sent me a bunch of random parts. The caps were bigger than I was hoping for, but rad nonetheless.

Ian's friend sent me 4 enclosures - some 1590DDs and a 1790ns - which will become prototyping boxes.

Pedal Parts Plus sent me 3 enclosures (and some standoffs), including their rad new Blue Steel Sparkle!

Oh yeah, and Seeed Studio sent me 110 PCBS - 11 different designs that are either for my production, or are prototypes to be released! Stay tuned for more details, including a new Delay and some Taptation boards, the Standard Fuzz, the Wakizashi Boost, and more!

It must smell like Rich Mahogany and Leatherbound books.

It's kind of a big deal.

The clean, clear look is my favourite. I prefer it over crazy images on my own stuff as well. I really admire guys who can go all out with some fantastic graphics, but that clean, simple look is still my favourite.

Great work.

Potentially. Have you compared the schematics to analyze the differences?
