there are a few good octave ups, the whammy and another company i've forgotten the name of thats similar are examples.

For DIY the lowrider is a good option for close as you can get.

Open Discussion / Want a free Op Amp Muff PCB?
May 14, 2012, 06:39:56 PM
Rule is that you shouldn't use Google to answer. If you know it already, then post the answer. If you don't, hang on cause If nobody knows it I'll let you google it later on...

So, to get a free Op Amp Muff PCB, answer this question:

"What cell number was Princess Leia rescued from when Luke, Han and Chewie stormed the first Death Star?"

Reflowing isn't necessarily going to be helpful until we know what kind of voltages you're getting. If you don't know how to take voltages, you'll need a voltmeter or a multi-meter. Connect your black probe to ground, then use your red probe to check:

+9V
GND
Pins 1-8 of all ICs
Pins 1-3 of all transistors.

Likely you're IC is getting hot because power is leaking to ground or you are feeding it with too much voltage.

Welcome Tim!

Perhaps if you shared some idea what sort of PCB you're using? Are you using one that's etched or one that's manufactured?

I'm guessing you're using an etched one. If that's the case, are you looking at the side with copper traces on it, or are you looking at the side with no copper traces? You should be looking at the side with no traces, meaning that the the copper traces are downwards, towards the table. Then, you should be able to make it line up. Perhaps a picture will help us out if you can make that work.

I hate to say it, but I'd guess you bought something that was a piece of junk to start with. I don't know the brand, or even if it's a good idea to use a butane iron, but that doesn't look like something I'd want to mess with.

Other than the FV-1 I see a 074 and a 4049. What's the last chip?

Open Discussion / Re: NGD - Mascis Jazzmaster

I know some people like squier stuff, but I've never met a squier guitar I could really get along with. I know that's bizarre, but it's been my experience they've never played nicely. Mostly the necks and sound has disagreed with me, but I will say that those are problems that can be overcome with a good fret job, some sanding, and some upgraded pickups.

I've also never been interested in jazzmaster guitars, but that Mascis one looks fantastic.

I'll try and help if I can, explaining it from a different point of view.

Each effect still has an input and output jack. However the switchable jacks he used allow there to be a connection between the three (four?) effects in normal mode WITHOUT using cables. Just plug into the input of effect 1, plug out of the output of effect 4, and all the effects are connected in series.

By using the switchable jacks, you can 'break' the connection between effect one and effect two by inserting a cable into the output jack from effect one and into the input jack of effect two. Perhaps you want a wah pedal inserted there for example.

Taking it a step further, you can now make the order go Effect 1 > effect 2 > effect 4 > effect 3, simply by plugging a cable from the output of effect 2 into the input of effect four, then from the output of the whole unit into the input of effect 3, then from the output of effect 3 out to other effects or an amp.

Does that make sense? I think it does.

General Questions / Re: Baby Board Parts Question
May 09, 2012, 04:45:32 PM
It is not imperative to use 1/8 watt resistors, and those caps will work fine.

However, you need to be aware that there are size differences between those parts and the 1/8 watt and smaller caps that may make it difficult to fit them into a small enclosure. If you're planning on using a 1590a or 1290ns enclosure we recommend you look at getting parts from Mouser, or anywhere else you can find 1/8 watt and short caps.
