Any thoughts? Going to try to take another stab at this tomorrow....

Tech Help - Etcher's Paradise / Woodcutter distorting

So I just build up the woodcutter and I'm going with a tele into a blackface style amp and with the compression over about 25% it turns into an overdrive pedal. Not too familiar with the circuit, but I took some voltage readings

As far as the opto was concerned I wrapped my LDR and diffuse green LED in electrical tape. Build doc doesn't say whether to wrap or not...

Q2 seems a tad suspect but I'm not quite sure where to begin. Any help is much appreciated

I would test the trimmer out of circuit if possible

General Questions / Power supply noise
September 17, 2016, 07:56:28 AM
Hey guys, not too sure about this one so I bring it to smarter brains than I. So I put together my friends board with a Voodoo Labs Pedal Power 2+. On the board he has a bunch of pedals including a klone I built him and a donner reverb pedal. The first donner reverb he had would make this noise whenever it was on- a high pitched squealing noise underneath everything no matter what the knobs were set to. He contacted the dealer and got shipped another one which we thought was good except with this one a squeal becomes apparent when both it and the klone are on but only then. I'm not super sure why this is happening as they are on isolated power supplies. The noise almost sounded like the klon charge pump oscillating however knob turning has no real effect on it. I tried changing charge pump IC's but the new one made it worse. Anyone have any ideas? Is it the reverb again?

General Questions / Re: Has anyone built the Turnabout?
September 15, 2016, 02:38:33 PM
Verified just means someone built it using that layout or PCB and has confirmed it works. He's saying if you want to use a layout that is known to work you can use the tagboard vero layout

Kings of Leon. They speak and sing in English but I sure don't know what most of their early albums lyrics are. I just kind of sing the vowel noises.

General Questions / Dark Box of Rock
September 03, 2016, 07:40:22 AM
This pedal seems a tad dark for my taste. I used the krankosaurus build doc and PCB. I've done some venturing into understanding pedals and circuits. From what I've read the box of rock has a big muff pi tone stack, which is a sort of balance between a lo pass filter (large value capacitor?) and a high pass filter (low value capacitor?). When comparing the schems of the krankosaurus and the box of rock they both use the same 47k 22nf combo for one filter while the krankosaurus uses 100nf and the other BOR schematics I'm seeing on websites uses a 10nf and both use an 82k resistor. Could this be the source of the darkness in my pedal? doesn't have the marshall upper mid bite until it's about 3/4 of the way up. I'd love to play with the tone stack calculator, however I have a mac and I couldn't find any that would work on my OS.

Collector voltage on Q3 seems a tad high. I think it's supposed to be aroun 5.5-6.5? maybe check your resistors around Q3 on the schematic.

General Questions / Re: Debugging A Fuzz Face...
August 30, 2016, 01:42:04 PM
The indicator LED shouldn't have anything to do with the sound of the pedal as it isn't in the audio circuit. I can't read the transistor type (big metal cans) but you can google "_________ datasheet" to find the pinout (which leg is base, collector and emitter). Then Q2 should have a bias of about -4.5v or 4.5v at the collector if I recall correctly.

Hmm yeah I just listened to that too. You're probably right. I guess I'm disappointed because it didn't sound like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_3EaBth7L8g which is what I thought it was based on. Thanks for all the help friends!

Just reflowed all the joints and nothing is changed. Super puzzled on this guy. Full on fuzz at 10 on the gain and at 9.8 a very very mild overdrive.
#13
Some pics for reference. Thought I had a 1kc pot handy to check that gain bunch up theory, but I didn't. Sad day. Any thoughts?

#14
Thanks for the thought I did that and it tests as normal!

Alright I checked and the parts are all correct. Anything I should check for with an audio probe with gain on full vs not? I'm a little stumped this is my first pedal in a while I've needed to debug and it doesn't seem as straightforward as normal. From what I've read these voltages seem fairly normal. In the madbean CSO it says to sub the gain pot for a 1KC to avoid the gain bunching up. Could that be what is happening here? Is that worth trying or is it something more fundamental?
