How would one go about running say 3 leds at once instead of one? Is it just a matter of running them together, like connecting all the anodes together and all the cathodes together and continue business as usual. Like 1 big LED that now would have 1 andode and 1 cathode made up of all 3? Or do I need to use to higher resistance resistor and somehow more power?

Open Discussion / PCB Layout for Musical Effects

Odale Carnals!

I want to start really understanding PCB layouts and home etching. Would ordering this book be a good place to start? I read a couple threads that mentioned the book, but was curious if anyone had any other suggestions or if this is the right place to start?

Open Discussion / Anybody know what this tool is?

My pops works for DWP out here in LA. He works on the power side, and gave me a bunch of his old tools that he said may or may not help me in my recent interest in pedal building and electronics in general. This is one of the tools he gave me and I have no idea what it is? It may not even be for electronics, but I thought this would be the place to ask if it was. Any of you homeboys ever seen one of these things? He gave some super nice sheer cutters as well. Flat angled and everything! Luckily I know what those are  ;D

Build Reports / Kablammer!

Odale Vatos! How are my brothers in solder? I built a pedal  ::)
Its suppose to be a box of rock. I got some really good advice on my last build report (especially regarding where I should put my power in relation to the LEDs in order to avoid crossing power and audio wires) that I wasn't able to apply to this build because I had already drilled and painted the enclosure. However, I do look forward to applying that helpful advice along with any and all that comes my way for my next build!

One of the problems I did run into with this build was that the boost LED was kind of going in and out for a bit. The effect worked fine, however, the switch was activating the LED almost like a momentary switch for a bit, only lighting up when the switch was depressed (not sad, but pushed down with my foot. HEYO!). Then after a couple stomps it would stay on. I resoldered the LED to the switch and it seems to be working fine now. I am also still getting a somewhat jolting classic "pop" when engaging the boost. I guess the pulldown resistor wasn't enough? I probably messed something up that I haven't figured out yet... Anyways, here are some pics.

Que Tal Vatos!

So I usually use a simple audio probe I built with a capacitor, instrument cable, and alligator clip to trouble shoot builds. This works fine, however I am always testing by myself and it gets rather annoying reaching down and strumming my guitar before I start probing. I was looking up signal generators and found the Tiny Tester on JMK PCBs site. It looks pretty cool and basic enough for what I need. I also saw the Testing Rig which incorporates the headphone amp circuit, but what I thought was really cool was all the switching options. Switching between a guitar signal and tone, switching between headphone and amp, and being able to bypass the circuit to reference your original signal (I really hope I understood that correctly?). I also saw on Small Bear a signal generator that comes with all the components and is a lot more basic. Out of pure laziness, I was considering that as an option. However, as I write this I feel like I am leaning towards the full on testing rig from JMK. I'm still pretty new to the forum, but I did noticed that JMK has a section on here, so I figured you guys would probably know best. I didn't want to post this in that section since I mentioned Small Bear, but thats probably just me over thinking things as usual... If any of you homeboys have used any of the above mentioned projects, please let me know what you think!

Build Reports / I built a pedal! Again...
April 03, 2014, 01:40:10 AM
Odale Vatos!

I built another pedal. This time I didn't get my brother to paint it as he was busy with work, so I was left to my own devices, and this is what I came up with. I call it  "John Doe-verdrive©". (You like how I put a © symbol on someone else's name and basically pedal?) Its a Red Llama. It will make more sense when you see it. I had some extra DPDT switches, so I used the millennium bypass method to keep it true bypass but still have an LED. I'm still striving everyday for that ever elusive beautifully clean wiring job!
My girlfriend hand sewed the bag that is underneath it in the pictures. I thought it was a cool way for us to incorporate our hobbies. Plus anything that can keep her busy and buy me more time with a soldering iron in my hand, I am on board with!

Build Reports / I built a pedal!!
March 25, 2014, 06:54:07 PM
Hi dudes,

So a couple weeks ago when I introduced myself a couple people asked to see some pics of some builds. Here are a couple pictures of a SHO I just finished. I really like these things. From the guts shot you will be able to understand my concern in regards to the neatness of my own wiring and the envy of all you homeboys with beautifully wired pedals. However, I think it is getting a bit better each time. And every time I see one of your guys' bad ass wiring jobs, it inspires me to slow down, be thoughtful and take just as much pride on the inside of the build as I do on the outside as well as the actual sound of the pedal. Plus, those 1590A's are so tiny, I always feel so clumsy and heavy handed when I try and wire those little guys. This pedal only has 1 knob, I have no idea how how people get multiple pots in there. And I have read the baby board guide over and over. One day...

I was going to check out the Guitar Pedal Expo this weekend in Van Nuys, and wanted to see what other Los Angelinos were going to be there? This would be my first time.  Out of curiosity, are the people that put it on going to respond to this post?

Odale Hombres! Happy Friday!

I seem to always be on the search for some decent micro flushcutters. I bought a solid pair a while back from Pacific Radio and they did the job fine, but seem to be going a bit dull. I was at an electronics store and bought some for a couple bucks as a replacement. No bueno, there is nothing flush or precision about them . I learned my lesson. I was curious if anyone has any suggestions, or preferences, or maybe no one has ever even really put much thought into it (I tend to over think things a bit). Anyways what do you use? I was gonna try and order something from amazon today. My local homedepot didnt seem to have anything that would suit my needs.

Thanks,

Hey Everyone! I was a little nervous about posting, so I reached out to Paul  ( I started off watching all the videos he posts on his youtube channel), and he told me I had nothing to worry about, and that this place wasn't like most forums. Everyone has mad respect for each other and their ideas. Which I am way down with it. Oh yea, another dude I know told me to quit lurking and say something already! So here I am...

Anyways, I'm relatively new to building but I'm sure like most of you, I really really dig it and fell in love rather quickly. I've got a few build under my belt but nothing crazy. Well, I just wanted to say hi and start off on the right foot! No more lurking for this hombre, I hope to be posting fairly regularly from here on out!
