Open Discussion / Re: Small Baggies

What an interesting contrast, you need them, I can't seem to get rid of them. I get so many small plastic bags with each order from Tayda that even though I try to throw them away, I keep on finding empty bags whenever I overturn or move something in my room.

Would this work for a 3mm dual LED?

Build Reports / Re: Pedalboard pics megathread

Last incarnation of my big pedal board

Guitar in -> Korg tuner -> Custom patchbay/splitter -> 1 signal out (currently to nowhere), other to board -> Bloviator -> Snow White Auto Wah -> Boss DF-2 (for boosts and feedback) -> Custom looper
Loop 1 Pitchshift: with Bit Commander -> WH-1 Whammy
Loop 2, a dual A/B loop, dirt loop: with Fuzz Factory -> Mayonaise III -> Little Green Wonder -> Stone Grey Distortion -> Decimator. clean loop: ?Lady (usually off as its supposed to be for a clean sound, except for leads)
Loop 3 Modulation: Ring Thing, Space Harp phaser, Shoot the Moon tremelo

From the looper -> AMT F1 preamp -> Pitchfactor (from there on stereo) => M9 => Nova Delay => RV-5 => back to custom patchbay and stereo out. Used to be to two Fender amps, nowadays, since I have that AMT preamp in the chain to two EHX Magnum 44 poweramp pedals and then straight into two cabinets.

This board is however being dismantled as I'm moving things over to a Pedal Train Grande board.

(Slightly) Smaller pedal board that I used in a Radiohead tribute band.

Line 6 wireless -> Custom patchbay with selectable input (between guitar and Kaoss pad) and selectable Pete Cornish buffer (for added fairy sprinkle dust) -> Korg tuner -> Whammy DT -> AMT SS30 Bulava preamp, for cleans, dirt and separate straight into a mixing desk out with cab sims. In the SS30's FX sent/return loop a Micro Amp for boosted leads and the Line 6 M13 for modulation, delays and reverb. From the AMT back to the custom patch bay and into the poweramp section of an amp via the FX return. Or not at all, thanks to the cab sim out of the SS30. It was pretty sweet no longer having to haul an amp along to gigs.

Small board for ad hoc configurations. In this case a Big Muff shootout.

Seven Big Muffs all at once. Awesome Muffage!!!

The cream of my rigs, my 19" rack unit of sonic doom!

With pedal board and MIDI controller.

This rig predates my current pedal building imagery trend for WH40K goodness henceforth the pedal pr0n. Its an awesome rig that took me years to build. Unfortunately, without roadies and a small truck there's no way I'm going to take it on the road with me. Which is too bad, because it works.

For those who want to know the signal chain
Line 6 wireless -> custom patch bay (I do love to make these things) -> TC tuner -> BYOC digital delay set to almost no delay at all (because I like how it colors my sound) -> Dunlop Wah -> custom looper
Loop 1: Boss DF-2, for boost and feedback
Loop 2: RC-2
Loop 3: WH-1 whammy
After the looper the signal goes back to the patchbay and to the 19" rack which has 3 GCX loopers with 8 loops each.

GCX-1: loop 1: Microsynth
Loop 2: Korg A3 multiFX, set only to the funkwah preset (think U2's Mysterious Ways)
Loop 3: POG2
Loop 4: Naga Viper
Loop 5: BYOC Screamer
Loop 6: Fuzz Factory
Loop 7: SFT
Loop 8: Dirty Little Secret

Between GCX 1 and 2 the Sansamp PSA1 is inserted as a preamp. The signal chain goes on from the PSA FX sent loop

GCX-2: Loop 1: Rocktron Hush
Loop 2: Rocktron Hush
Loop 3: Boss GE-7 (set for a clean sound with a little more highs and less lows)
Loop 4: Micro Amp (for leads)
Between loops 4 and 5 I inserted a custom signal splitter so from now on the signal goes stereo
Loop 5: Digitech DHP33 harmonizer L
Loop 6: Digitech DHP33 harmonizer R
Loop 7: Boss GX-700 multi FX L
Loop 8: Boss GX-700 multi FX R

GCX-3: Loop 1: Korg Kaosspad 3 L
Loop 2: Korg Kaosspad 3 R
Loop 3: Line 6 M5 L
Loop 4: Line 6 M5 R
Loop 5: Line 6 Echo Pro L
Loop 6: Line 6 Echo Pro R
Loop 7: TC G-Major L
Loop 8: TC G-Major R

From there on the signal returns to the PSA FX return loops. The output either goes stereo to a Marshall 8008 poweramp into a stereo cabinet, or it goes from the PSA cab sim output straight into a mixing desk. Which was how I planned to use this thing, and only use the Marshall and cabinet for stage sound.

Build Reports / Custom pedal looper
January 27, 2015, 02:13:12 AM
New custom looper day!

I will be upgrading this mess of a board to a new pedal train board soon and figured it could use a new looper to minimize current tap dancing.

The current custom looper I used only had 3 loops, pitchshift, dirt and modulation and it was becoming a chore having to do the extra tapdancing to handle the delays and harmonizer. A new looper was needed. The main problem being that my harmonizer and delays are run in stereo. So a solution had to be found to able to switch in stereo with a single stomp, which seemed to be rare as all DIY switching seems to be mono, and of course the signal had to be split at some point in the chain.

Ultimately I decided on the following chain that I felt was necessary for my needs.
- Loop 1 pitchshift, mono: mostly Whammy and the Bit Commander, the latter will probably be replaced by an EHX Pitchfork
- Loop 2 dirt, mono: not so much a single on/off loop as an double A/B loop which switches between a loop with my dirt pedals and a loop for clean sounds. Oddly enough I also placed a Big Muff ?Lady clone in this loop set for leads Preamp Send/Return, mono: I've been using an AMT F1 preamp as the basis of my sound lately between dirt and basically the rest. The AMT gives me the sound of a Fender Twin and allows me to either go directly into a mixing desk using its cab sim simulator or go directly into a set of EHX Magnum 44 power amps and whatever cabinets are available. Thus eliminating my need to haul extra amps along. Which I've done quite enough over the years, thank you very much!
- Loop 3 modulation, mono: Everything that goes swirly, woosh and chop chop. I'm thinking of adding a TC Electronic Dreamscape to add flanger, chorus and vibrato for even more swirly and woosh.
- Loop 4 harmonizer, stereo: Eventide Pitchfactor. Expensive as hell, but its one of the few harmonizers that will do more exotic scales then just major and minor. Does also a shitload of other stuff that scares me. Sometimes I lay awake at night, thinking how much it can do. And if it watches me thinking of it. I always catch it watching me......
- Loop 5 delays and reverb: because I worship at the altar of the Edge so I'm a delay whore. The nova delay is awesome! It would be even more awesome if it did both filter delay and had a looping function, then I could chug the Line6. Which is both huge and demands a separate power source.

This in itself would have been a herculean task, 21 jacks had to be wired up, but no, I had to be even more ambitious. There obviously had to be a splitter between loops 3 and 4 to go from mono to stereo. I choose the AMZ 2 channel splitter (http://tagboardeffects.blogspot.nl/2014/08/amz-2-channel-splitter.html). I also wanted to include a repeater buffer that would come after loop 2 so my dirt boxes would play nice with the stuff that would come afterwards. Luckily my only exploits into designing a vero layout was such a thing exactly (http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r19/Muad_zin/repeaterbufferV4.jpg). For further madness I also wanted to include an EP-3 preamp (http://tagboardeffects.blogspot.nl/2014/05/a-pair-o-preamps-echoplex-and-tillman.html), because I like things that give more brightness and clarity to my guitarsound, because I'm not into bassy dark sounds. Or maybe I'm just getting deaf (you think the sound at a concert is too bright and shrill? Explanation: a FOH sound engineer with hearing damage (higher frequencies are the first to go)). Anyway, I chose the version with the 18v chargepump for extra headroom. While the buffer and splitter are always on I decided to make the preamp switchable. In case it is too much (and I run into a sound engineer whose hearing is still intact). With so many gizmos I'd reckon that this would make this looper also a multi effect. Because I couldn't find any design for a stereo switch I settled on using a 4PDT switch and wire that up as a double millenium switch, with only one channel controlling the LED. With that much gizmos and stereo routing the wiring could only be a nightmare. And it was.

It took me two full days of soldering just to hook everything up. I spent the entirity of christmass working on this thing. For background entertainment (because I like to have some television on during soldering, as I can generally get the gist of whats on whilst doing something else) I watched (or oldered) during the entire Hobbit trilogy (extended versions of the first two installments) and the entire last season of Doctor Who.

After two days I was finally finished with the inside and it was time to start plugging things up to see if everything was working. With lots of apprehension and dread I fired it up and to my surprise, it being the most complicated build I ever made, there were only a few minor complications that were easily fixed. I have had much simpler circuits give me much greater headaches by comparison. Oddly enough the biggest headache was the LED switching as switching off the LED of loop 1 caused all the other LED's to go off as well. Weird shit that I solved by separating the grounding between the loop 1 LED and the others.

And then it worked.

Didn't have any more decal paper left at that time to do a proper cover so I went for a simpler look at first. But I didn't like it so after I finally managed to get some decal paper I went for something decent. Next stop, unpacking that huge pedal train Grande box standing in my hallway! NHPBD to follow.

For a 5mm dual colored LED this usually does the trick: http://www.musikding.de/Mounting-Clip-convex-for-5mm-LED

Unless you mean something else that is.

Quote from: GrindCustoms on January 24, 2015, 04:08:50 PMHahahahaha! Great description! But yeah... i think you're right about the buffer. :-\

Based on that I'm not sure if I would like to have this effect as a pedal. Internally inside a guitar however..... Vegas, baby!!!

It sounds like a bunch of Devi Ever pedals have gotten together to gangrape a Fuzz Factory and created a bastard offspring. Judging by that talk about input impedance I reckon this will not be a pedal that will do well sitting behind a buffer.

I really wish they would also provide metric listings for their products on their sites. All those listings in inches might as well have been Chinese to me.

I was afraid that they were going to come up with something bigger, as I have just bought what I thought was their biggest board. Would have been miffed if they had come up with something even bigger.

Maybe you should get something with presets? That way you don't have to turn knobs again.

This will come in very handy. Especially since the euro is plummeting and the dollar rising. And Tayda charges in dollars.  :'(

I quit a band once and rejoined two years later (I think, give or take). I quit because I became really frustrated with the singer's control freakage at the one hand and the total lack of ambition at the other. And I was also busy with other bands, making my own music, which was kinda taking off at the time. I made sure however to leave on good terms. I stated that I just couldn't do three bands at the same time anymore and that whatever differences I had where musical, not personal. From time to time I returned to help out where I could as a sound engineer, stage hand and guitar tech because I did enjoy spending time with these guys. Eventually their replacement guitarist quit as well to pursue his own band and they asked me back. I rejoined while keeping in mind that this time I would keep my expectations low. This band was just not going to be the next hottest thing, but just a group of friends having fun. And if the singer wanted to be the guy in charge, then he was free to do so. I no longer considered it my mission to push this band into the spotlight. My mission now was just to have some fun making music with my friends. With acceptance of other people's faults or should I say limitations comes freedom.

Damn you EHX!!!! I have too many of your big landscape boxes already! I can't possibly fit in another on my board.  :'(

Mad Professor Stone Grey Distortion. It managed to kick my trusty old Dirty Little Secret clone that had been sitting on my board since 2010 off my board. I find it to be quite comparable to the DLS in an A/B test, but in a band mix it seems to sit better in the mix. The Stone Grey was also tied with a Crunch Box clone, which I thought sounded just a little better, but because it was prone to squealing with the gain maxed the Stone Grey won.

Björn does seem to know how to make a tasty stompbox.  8)

+1 on the Ring Thing. Even more awesome with the 8 step sequencer.

Methinks the reason the PP2 dominates is because for the price its probably the best you can get. There are cheaper ones but their mileage may vary. There are better ones but they're more expensive. With the PP2 you know you will get every volt that you need for your money.
