Open Discussion / Automatic wire strippers
January 07, 2011, 12:07:19 PM
I got a pair for cheap and I guess you get what you pay for!  Anyone have a recommended automatic wire stripper for our thin gauge wire that does not mark the wire up?  The ones I got were from harbor freight...
I found these ones but I don't know if there any good and they would be a pain to return.

Here is my Glitterrattii build for a friend.  It would have went smooth, but I neglected to look at the wiring diagram  ::) I didn't realize that the gain and treb were different...  Good thing I tested it first because I had a fun time boxing it  ;D  Enjoy!  O and thanks for the waterslide tips guys.  I perfected this one I think.

No guts, no glory...

Open Discussion / Waterslide decal problems
December 28, 2010, 12:48:46 PM
I'm having a heck of a time perfecting a waterslide decal process.  I usually don't worry about waterslides but I have a build for someone else in a trade deal...

Here's what I'm using a Brother Lazer Printer and Experts Choice Laser waterslide paper.  In the first attempt I printed then soaked for around 20-30 seconds in warm water.  I started to put it over the enclosure and some of the toner was falling off the decal.  I looked to the net..It was mentioned you should still clearcoat the decal first to protect it.  So I grabbed some clearcoat rustolium and sprayed the decal with two light coats.  I let it dry and then soaked the waterslide and slid it on to the enclosure.  This time the waterslide seemed to have shrunk a bit, more than I was happy with.  I imagine it was the rustolium that caused it to shrink??  I don't know..any help is appreciated.  The waterslide I'm working on now is for my zombii and I was hoping to get it right for my friends glitterattii build...

Open Discussion / Zombii
December 24, 2010, 03:49:05 AM
I just finished the zombii board.  Had to stop by the computer to check out some youtube clips.  The thing sounds so wickedly crazy I had to see if I didn't screw something up.  Nope it just sounds that bad...  It will be fun to play with the knobs once I've got it in an enclosure.  I turned the stab knob down and used my additional voltage pot on the testing rig to get some crazy fuzz swells.

Open Discussion / Aquaboy pcb out of stock

I went to purchase one and saw they were out of stock.  Will you be reordering these or do you have a new top secret analog delay on the way?  ;)

Build Reports / Fat Pants (Pre-fab board)
December 19, 2010, 01:26:36 AM
Plain old stock "Fat Pants" in a 1590A.  Easy build, should have been done in a quick night project  ::)

I tested the board before entry, sounded great!  Put the board in, wired everything up, and then there was nothing but some crackling (not ok  :D)  Took everything out and this time it didn't work hooked up to the testing rig.  Anyways, I had one of the pcb solder joints crack under the handling pressure from mounting.

LED is a flat top blue 5mm, color is PPP prismatic black, knob from mammoth.

Sounds "sparkly" too.

And the obligatory gut shot...  ;)

Open Discussion / Breakout board / Testing Rig
December 12, 2010, 03:30:22 AM
Finally rigged up a testing station based off of "The Amazing Beavis Board".  It's not pretty, wasn't meant to be, but it is functional.  It sure beats alligator clips and rats nest test setups  ::).  I followed the design of the beavis board, except I have two spare slots on the terminal strip if I want to use them for something else and I wired the voltage pot so it would sag as I turn it clockwise.  Took me about 3 hours from start to finish.  There has been testing rig talk previously here so I decided to post it for anyone was looking into this option.

Can you fit a aquaboy with a DD board in a 125B easily?

Open Discussion / 4049 chips

Is there a difference between the CD4049UBE and 4049UBN?  I've seen both of these listed for red llama schematics.  Can either be used?  I looked at spec sheets but it was like reading a foreign language for me.  :(

Open Discussion / Steve from Smallbear
November 22, 2010, 03:19:30 PM
I had the pleasure of meeting Steve from Smallbear Elec on Saturday at a guitar show in Philly.  He was really busy, seemed like a nice down to earth guy.  There was a pedal mod company there as well and they were very busy, maybe because they had two Klons.  Another vendor was selling a discontinued but in the box timeline.  I asked what he wanted for it...when he said $850 I laughed and kept walking.

Sounds pretty wicked!  The enclosure layout is a little unconventional and proved to be a challenge.  Enclosure is transparent red from PPP.

General Questions / Zombii Transistors
November 05, 2010, 11:45:52 AM
I'm looking for germainium transistors for the Zombi.  I've heard it said any decent ones will work.  The project docs say:

"Stock unit originally used AC128s. Any PNP GE transistors with
appropriate gain ranges will suffice. Suggested Hfe for Q2 is around 70
and for Q3 around 110."

I can't seem to find anywhere the list the gain for these on Small Bear.  I'd like to buy from him to save shipping from somewhere else...

Thanks

Open Discussion / Multimeter
October 19, 2010, 12:28:06 PM
Any suggestions for a good multimeter that won't break the bank.  My old sears one is no longer functioning properly.  I'd prefer it to read capacitance as well.  ;D

Open Discussion / Looper enclosures
October 06, 2010, 12:57:23 PM
I'm starting to assemble items to make a looper with 4 to 6 loops with a master bypass.  I'm having a very hard time finding a suitable enclosure.  All I can find are the long skinny hammond type, but they look pretty subpar as far as a design standpoint with the exposed edges etc..  Anyone know where to purchase one that is similar to this1smyne?  http://www.this1smyne.com/product_list/custom/looper/

O and by the way.  If this doesn't belong in this Forum please don't be afraid to tell me.  :) I'm not sure what the protocol is for non-madbean project discussions.

Thx

Open Discussion / Solder Iron Station
September 17, 2010, 11:40:21 AM
Anyone have any suggestions for solder iron stations.  I have a small Weller iron with a crappy radio shack stand.  The iron seems to heat up slowly and the stand is junk.   I'm looking for a good hobby type iron that will be sufficient for pedals.  The one I'm using does not do too bad, just looking to upgrade ;)  I'm also looking for suggestions on helping hands / and magnification..

What about solder diameter?  I recently got some stuff from small bear that seems a little thick...

Open Discussion / Decals over pre-painted enclosures
August 16, 2010, 11:16:08 AM
Anyone have experience putting decals over a pre-painted enclosure (like pedal parts plus)?  I have been painting my own and just clear coating the decal.  Cost wise it's cheaper to buy a pre-painted and saves me time.  I'm just wondering if there are any compatibility issues that I may run into.  Any suggestions or tips are welcome!  Thanks

Open Discussion / Parts kits
August 09, 2010, 05:15:49 PM
I'm looking to purchase the most common resistor and capacitor values that are used in pedal building.  I know some places sell variety packs but I don't want parts whose values I'll never use for years.  I'm just looking for a few common values for each that overlap a broad spectrum of pedals.  Anyone have any tips or suggestions.  Plus, is there any added value going for the metal film vs carbon resistors?
