Did you use the same pots both times when you put them in that box? Could be a bad gang, or something shorted to the case.

I have a feeling it must be somthing shorted to the case or a bad ground or something.  This enclosure has a lot of paint and gloss on it.  Do you think that it might not be grounding very well?  Sand around the jacks?  I only seem to be having problems with this enclosure.

No, your problem is clearly that the dual gang pot is malfunctioning in some way. You didn't actually answer my question -- did you use the same pots when you replaced the PCB?

I actually used a different Dual gang pot when I re-built it.   I did build another pedal yesterday and everything worked as it should!

  I have been scratching my head about this one for a day now.  I have built over 100 of these and never had this happen.  When the gain is off it seems to be semi normal.
as I turn up the gain it cleans up and gets a bit darker.  and as I keep turning up the gain around 3 O'clock the gain comes in and is super bright and brash.

I am not sure if its a mixed up part?
Or if its a bad part?
Or if it has to do with grounding?
Is it the new style of Orange LED I used for a first time? HAHA  I am really digging for the answer.

I built two in a row and put them in this enclosure and both times this was the result.

Power @ the Jack 9.39 Volts

What is the preferred / best way to wire the ground in this situation?

Wire Ground of the battery snap to the ground of the  9v DC Power Jack?

or

Wire Ground to the Sleeve of the Input or Output Jack?

A customer of mine as posed a potential problem with a Klon Klone he bought from me.  I have never heard of this or had this happen before.  any ideas?

Hi Shane...

I've had this problem twice in as many days and figured it is time to call for help...

One two occasions I've plugged my Klone in and turned on my amp (once with a silverface Princeton Reverb, the other with a silverface Champ) to hear loud feedback / hum through the speaker. The problem has been isolated to the Klone - no other pedal of any type created the sound using the same amp, cables and guitar.

The sound is quite loud and independent of any adjustments of the knobs on the Klone, and it makes the same sound with or without a guitar plugged in. It diminishes as I turn the amp volume down.

The first time it happened was late at night, so after attempting to diagnose it, I figured I'd deal with it in the morning and went to bed. It seemed to work fine the next morning after i swapped the battery,  though it seemed a bit "quieter," like i had to turn the gain up a little more than before. That might have been my imagination, though.

The second time it happened was just a few minutes ago. I've tried changing the battery but that wasn't the problem - the same battery was fine in other pedals, and the Klone made the same sound with the new battery. Nothing alleviated the problem.

Thoughts or advice? I've got the original packaging and can ship it back if you want to have a look.

I still love the pedal, and I know electrical gremlins can be a bitch to diagnose, so I'm not sweating it. Let me know how to proceed.

Thought I would share a recent build a customer ordered.  And I know you all like to nerd out on pedal guts!! 

As you can see I have not followed the D9E craze.  I am not a believer 

I soldered a Via on accident.. Will this ruin the PCB?

Its a 2 layer board.

   What will the difference be if I use a audio 10k vs a Linear 10K pot bot the volume/ output of a drive pedal?  Will there be a noticeable difference ?

It have been said that Finnegan when building the klon have sometime used Linear and Log pots but it was probably a matter of availability or what he had laying around like lots of builder also do wich create variants within the product, hence having a whole myth around it.

I personnaly prefer the Linear, the output is really well delivered and there's no «bunching» at the end of the pot.

Hi Shane. I'm usually not confident enough to answer questions here, but I think I have a good understanding of the difference between different pots. The first thing to remember is a 10k pot is a 10k pot. It's a variable resistor between zero and 10k. The difference is obviously in the range between zero and 10k.  Our ears live in a logarithmic world and that's why many volume or output pots you see are Audio or logarithmic pots, but the truth is even a linear pot can get you to the same variable resistance point and therefore sound exactly the same. The difference will be how much we have to turn the knob to get to that variable resistance point.  At 50% turn, the linear pot will get you 50% increase in resistance (in this case 5k). Notice how I didn't say 50% increase in volume because our hearing doesn't work that way.  At 50% turn on an audio/logarithmic pot, 50% turn will only increase the resistance by maybe 10-20%. We have to turn the knob clockwise by 80-90% until the resistance exponentially increases (just like our perceived hearing).   I hope this helps and if anything I said is incorrect, please correct me. Steve.

Great info thanks man!  I will be trying to get my head around this.  Mainly how an Audio pot works.  Linear pots seem logical to me.

Ok - so this morning I took a audio probe and checked all over the circuit.  I seem to be getting sound everywhere in the circuit except the part labeled " Power section " in the schematic included in the build instructions.  I took a magnify glass and closely inspected the traces.. they are all very clean with no bridges across to another trace.  I also double checked the placement of the electrolytic caps and the  BC549's .

I'm basically cooking pizza almost all day tomorrow for Lexa's party. We're going to figure out where to put almost 30 people in our little house. With board games.
