Hey Guys

I have been scratching my head about this one for a day now.  I have built over 100 of these and never had this happen.  When the gain is off it seems to be semi normal.
as I turn up the gain it cleans up and gets a bit darker.  and as I keep turning up the gain around 3 O'clock the gain comes in and is super bright and brash.

I am not sure if its a mixed up part?
Or if its a bad part?
Or if it has to do with grounding?
Is it the new style of Orange LED I used for a first time? HAHA  I am really digging for the answer.

I built two in a row and put them in this enclosure and both times this was the result.

Power @ the Jack 9.39 Volts

Power @ the front of R28 ( 47r resistor )

Power after passing through R28 (47r resistor )

Power @ the 12v Zenner

Open Discussion / Advice with 9v battery supply wiring!
January 04, 2015, 06:16:38 AM
Some customers, but not all have reported difficulty with grounding issues when using the battery only.

What is the preferred / best way to wire the ground in this situation?

Wire Ground of the battery snap to the ground of the  9v DC Power Jack?

or

Wire Ground to the Sleeve of the Input or Output Jack?

Some customers not all but some have reported difficulty with grounding issues when using the battery only.

Open Discussion / Help with a diagnosis
January 01, 2015, 02:59:46 PM
A customer of mine as posed a potential problem with a Klon Klone he bought from me.  I have never heard of this or had this happen before.  any ideas?

"

Hi Shane...

I've had this problem twice in as many days and figured it is time to call for help...

One two occasions I've plugged my Klone in and turned on my amp (once with a silverface Princeton Reverb, the other with a silverface Champ) to hear loud feedback / hum through the speaker. The problem has been isolated to the Klone - no other pedal of any type created the sound using the same amp, cables and guitar.

The sound is quite loud and independent of any adjustments of the knobs on the Klone, and it makes the same sound with or without a guitar plugged in. It diminishes as I turn the amp volume down.

The first time it happened was late at night, so after attempting to diagnose it, I figured I'd deal with it in the morning and went to bed. It seemed to work fine the next morning after i swapped the battery,  though it seemed a bit "quieter," like i had to turn the gain up a little more than before. That might have been my imagination, though.

The second time it happened was just a few minutes ago. I've tried changing the battery but that wasn't the problem - the same battery was fine in other pedals, and the Klone made the same sound with the new battery. Nothing alleviated the problem.

Thoughts or advice? I've got the original packaging and can ship it back if you want to have a look.

I still love the pedal, and I know electrical gremlins can be a bitch to diagnose, so I'm not sweating it. Let me know how to proceed.

Thanks!     "

Build Reports / RYRA Klone /w Pic's and Video
November 14, 2014, 07:16:28 AM
Hey guys

Thought I would share a recent build a customer ordered.  And I know you all like to nerd out on pedal guts!!  ;)

As you can see I have not followed the D9E craze.  I am not a believer  :-X

I soldered a Via on accident.. Will this ruin the PCB?

Its a 2 layer board.

Open Discussion / Audio vs Linear
July 18, 2014, 10:07:44 PM
Hey guys.

What will the difference be if I use a audio 10k vs a Linear 10K pot on the volume/ output of a drive pedal?  Will there be a noticeable difference ?

Hey Guys...  This is real cool.

Is it possible to make something remotely similar to this with a DIY build?

Tech Help - Projects Page / Darkside.. Help! G-2
July 10, 2014, 01:41:31 PM
I just finished up my Darkside build and have no power to the LED.  I am wondering if I miss wired the 9v power jack?  I did try flip flopping the two hot " red " wires on the 9v Jack but that did not help anything :o This is a little different wiring than I am use to.  I think I followed the instructions properly ;D ;)

So I ordered 1N5401's from Mouser here..  This is the exact ones I got.

The problem is..  they are HUGE!

Did I get the right ones>?

Problem is that they will not fit in my etch.  The leads are way to fat to fit in the holes... even if I drill the holes larger it will be larger than the traces that its supposed to thread through.

Great job here Bean!!!

This is a great pedal with lots of Klon-ish sounds and cool extra features in a really compact build.

socketed R20 - and put the standard Klon value 1.8K
Socketed C16 -       Put the standard Klon value 3n9

Diodes are socketed with

D1&2   1n34a
D3&4   BAT41

I must say though..  The switchable Fat and Cliping features are very subtle..  I would prefer something more dramatic.

So I got the build all finished up and put together.

While the pedal is in bypass I am getting a very loud Motor boat / Whine sound although the guitar signal is working...

When the effect is engaged I get nothing... nada..zero! :'(   --   Except the LED does work 8)

Help!

Do you think the IC's are bad?

Yesterday I etched a few PCB's

Today I decided to etch an enclosure for a customer.   And my etching solution seemed to be acting a bit different than I was use to.  Low and behold it seems to have transferred the copper from yesterday to the aluminum enclosure today..

After I cleaned it a little it came out this gray tarnished color..  I dont know if I try and clean it real well if it will all come off.  It did not etch into the aluminum at all,,  it is now raised where it is black and etched where it is chrome looking..  it basically made a reverse etch.

Have any of you seen this before?

Open Discussion / Sound quality on Etched PCB's??
June 18, 2014, 01:57:51 PM
Hey Madmen

How do you guys feel the sound quality is on a Etched PCB verses a production version?  I have been etching lately and just thinking to my self that these traces look really thin and wondering if they will not sound as good or maybe even be a bit more noisy?

Any opinions on this?

Hey guys

So I etched a few Sunking PCB's today..  My first time etching.

I am just a little afraid that the traces might not be clean enough.   I would hate to go and populate it and have a dead PCB..  If you can look at this etch and tell me if I need to do anything to fix it.. That would be very helpful!!

Peace

General Questions / LED not lighting up Help!
June 16, 2014, 11:31:01 AM
Hey Guys

I am building a Klone.. (Chimera) and I have two problems..

1.  The LED does not turn on.

2.  When the Pedal is engaged it is a bit more nosy/Feedback'ish than normal.

- Can these two problems be related?

Where should I start?

Replace the LED first?

Thanks so much for your help!

-Shane

Hey guys

Are you using a Dremel to drill your holes on an etched PCB?  And if so any specific models and brands you prefer?

Hey Guys

I am looking at purchasing Eagle..  What do you guys recommend I get?  EAGLE Hobbyist, EAGLE Light,  EAGLE Standard( Which seems a bit pricy )..  I am looking to build my own PCB's for personal use and possibly sell some of them if I get good at making them:)  Although mainly for my personal use.

Peace
Shane
