Build Reports / Binge Building.
March 05, 2024, 01:40:19 PM
After a drought of 6 years my building switch flipped to the binge setting..
I have to catch up to you guys.
I've built eleven pedals since December... what's that, three+ months?

Last one was VFE Choral Reef. Too my surprise it fired right up. Actually most of these didn't give me any problems.

VFE Projects / ALPHA DOG Question. [ANSWERED]
February 15, 2024, 09:05:50 PM
Will subbing R2 and R3 with 2M instead of 2.2M create any issue?
I looks like a voltage divider to provide bias to the circuit?

Cabintech Xvive MN3005 doc says pin #1 is GROUND
Anamorph docs says 15v should show on Pin #1
I'm confused.

I traced test tone all the way to the input to the MN3005 and then get motor boating on TP1 (output) and directly on the chips output. Tried both chips same result.

I need to burn 3 pics for the switching boards on VFE projects.
What I/o hardware bits and what software (I use OSX) do I need?
I saw the program download link on VFE..
Thanks.

I've read that the circuit the Misfit is based on (Ibanez MT-10) might need a mod to get rid of the some flub or low end going into the distortion section. I love circuits with pre distortion bass roll off controls. Would rather have a pot if that is possible.

Is the highlighted cap the one I need to lower, to raise the cut off frequency?
I read from 220nF to 100nF might be more to my liking.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks!

Chinese Transistor tester says:

hFE=   50.7
Ic=.     .59mA
UBE=   66mv
ICE0=  .63uA
ICEs=  11uA

That is in Chinese I think?
Is the Ic reading leakage?  Current / Collector = .59mA ?
I'm on the edge of setting up to do old school RG KEEN on a breadboard to figure out what is what...
unless you would be so kind as to tell me if there is a leakage reading or a calculation from that data in there?

General Questions / AION [Skywave gain issue?] SOLVED?
January 02, 2024, 08:53:47 PM
I built the Skywave. It has a trimmer to lower or raise the gain on transistor one. I have the trimmer/gain all the way down and there is too much gain for my taste... what should I change?

Attached is the schemo.

There is a switch for three gain structures. On the middle position is the least gain. The other two are too much fuzz and way too much fuzz. I realize this is a personal taste thing. I want to tame this beast so the middle position is rhythm hair, two is more hair and three is I give haircuts to the front row. As it is middle position, or lowest gain, I have to turn the gain pot almost all the way off for tasteful hairiness.

I have a  Colosulous (however you spell it) and a Flintlock flanger that I calibrated by ear but they both have sweep issues I would like to fix.

Would somebody school me on this topic?

VFE Projects / Anyone try matched 2n5457 in Tractor Beam?
December 14, 2023, 08:03:43 PM
Anyone try substituting matched set of 2n5457 in place of the specified 2n5952s in the Tractor Beam?

Thnx

Tractor Beam uses 16v Zener and is split rail ? (For switching board)

Requests / Random pitch modulation delay with drive.
December 12, 2023, 03:21:36 AM
I've been using a few cool plugins that I love the sound of one is the Waves Abby Road Reel ADT. It is an emulation of the vocal doubling technique using a tape deck they developed for the Beatles but it works great for guitar. You can modulate the delayed signal with waveforms but the one I really love is the random one.

If you have a dedicated amp to test your builds.. what is it?

I would love a small test amp.
Don't really want solid state but whatever works.

Open Discussion / What is the benefit of optical bypass?
November 22, 2023, 02:53:07 PM
While going through all of my pedal supplies, I found about 20 Opto-Tron boards from 1776. I have all the optical chips (H11F1).

My question is this:  What is the benefit over regular bypass switch?

I searched, everywhere, including this forum. I can't seem to find them anywhere.
Most are 11mm tall. What is considered "low profile"???
My head is going to explode.
Does anyone have a source?
A way to search? Low profile gives no returns.

Been dusting off my workbench.. finding some amazing memories buried under all the mess..So many projects. How has everybody been?
My last project was a Flintlock Flanger and it got the better of me. It was the first project that I couldn't figure out what was wrong. I also bought a Fractal and lost the spark to try and get a good sound through pedals. Well after crashing and burning, forced retirement and a fall into the whiskey bottle I ended up in rehab and have been clean for over 5 years. Just started to get the itch to build again. I got out the flanger and looked it over. Took me about 10 minutes to see what was wrong. A jumper was backwards.  Man. I spent weeks trouble shooting that thing. I think I have at least 30 projects waiting to be built and at least 15 waiting to be boxed... I have some of Rej's stuff from Grind so if anyone knows where his build docs landed that would be cool.  Went to the Philippenes over Christmas and New years. Gives you perspective on where you're at. I live in Southern California. Big difference... Got engaged to a Filipina and have been enjoying the 2+ year struggle with Immigration as my city gets overrun with immigrants that don't even need to get a visa... So anyway just tryin to stay alive..

Cheers!

High Leakage Diodes make for bad distortion sound?

I posted this in LectricFX help section. Any extra eyes would help. Odd voltages etc.
