I'll try to be brief-ish ... if you're a bedroom player, I like tweaking the amz fat mod to lower the gain just enough to get rid of that harshness at the end of the dial and keep the frequency response more sane(if you do the fat mod, it really lowers the gain and leaves the tone dark at the same time). I do shotgun in the film caps to get more bass ala the keeley mods, and I like to convert the tone control into a skreddy type big muff control (flat/scoop/mid on a switch). If the guy likes extra switches, give him one for diode clipping options as well.

if you're a stage volume player, I tend to leave the frequency response of the pedal alone and just lower the gain by tweaking the fat mod as above and tweaking the tone stack some(I generally use the violet ram's head values).

used a fluke true rms meter and I believe they came in all of 100mv higher in Vf than 1n4148 ... and I'm thinking something of 1.6V of Vf for the series pair. Plenty of ways to get there that don't include breaking the bank.

6sl7 is a hifi octal preamp tube, mostly seen in guitar amps in early fender tweeds and later on in Ampegs.

so I'd like a word or two about the IT comments but I'm a bit busy solving the world's problems from the comfort of my couch ...

General Questions / Re: Desoldering Iron?
February 14, 2017, 04:20:36 PM
I haven't had a bad enough rework yet. I mainly rely on patience and technique to get me by. De-solder/Rework station is on the wishlist behind some atlas testing equipment and a modern o-scope.

as long as a party(any party) loses focus, involvement, or popularity at the local and state level for long enough, it opens up the opportunity for someone else to set the real rules of the game. voting districts, voter id laws, polling places, electoral college procedures, etc all controlled by state or local governments.
having lived in Kansas up until about August of last year, I can speak from experience that there are elected officials out there actively using voter id laws to suppress voting and manipulate turnout and results(they don't like Mexicans in Kansas, legal or otherwise because their population is growing). ironically the same elected official that worked so hard for voter id laws under the premise of battling election fraud also worked very hard to block investigation into voting irregularities that a professor of mathematics discovered. even more ironically, all the voter fraud cases he's tried(still in the single digits) have been double voting(voting in two states) and not the illegal immigrants he originally set out to catch. if this sounds familiar, this guy has the President convinced he lost the popular vote because a couple million people voted in this fashion. in case you haven't gotten your daily dose of irony, the President's inner circle and family is filled with double voters.

ATL ... only because watching them dismantle green bay was so satisfying that I'd like to watch them do the same thing to the pats

I'd go so far as to say that fsb as a community despises other people's success. that said, such particular themes are held in other "free the information" groups and it is par for the course. hackers hate it when people grow up and get jobs in IT Security for example.

I was waiting for the other shoe to drop and someone say something about function(fx) ... when I saw that shade thrown over there I pretty much quit going to fsb. it was childish, typical internet forum troll behavior I've seen a million different places.

my feeling on the matter is that fsb as a community doesn't want to pay for the information by buying and tracing as they have in the past and would prefer to bully said information out of the members of function(fx) and ideally other pedal makers.

when you're down to that kind of behavior is it really about information freedom or piracy? because it feels less high idealed than freedom and a little more dirty like piracy. I'd also remind fsb that they are A source of information, not the only source and ultimately people don't owe them anything for giving away information.  the old chestnut about teaching as a thankless job seems appropriate ... the reward is the result. maybe enjoy it when your membership goes off on its own and enjoys individual success.

I don't currently have anything vintage lying around in completed form ... here's a link to one I restored, owned for a while, and sold when times got tough. https://reverb.com/item/636201-sears-silvertone-1482-1960s-seafoam-green

there's a lot of information to be had there but the tone is rather catty as evidenced by this thread ... I don't know why they hate it when people outgrow their particular kiddie pool ... and I really don't know why they loathe other people's success.

2017 looks like the second half of walking dead, humans, and maybe catching up on a bunch of other series from the fall that I didn't get a chance to watch

its much better, I'd gladly change the hassle of unpacking for spending the holidays the way I did. plus I finally have everything out of storage which means I can get back to soldering. nobody needs to pay for shipping, I just needed to make sure I could cover myself to get through this.
