General Questions / Reverb recommendations?
November 29, 2011, 11:07:55 AM
I'm looking to make a pretty basic hall reverb pedal that basically only needs hall size and volume controls. Is there any board you guys could recommend since we don't have one here at home here madbean?

General Questions / Re: Epoxy Resin
November 26, 2011, 09:44:53 PM
For all the people that have used this.

I'm looking for something that can give a durable finish over the rattle can paint jobs I've done. I've already chipped some of the spray on clear coats so this looks promising. The finished results are amazing but how durable is it? Powder coating is out of the question since I already have the paint. I spent so much time on the nice paint jobs that I want to make sure whatever I put on is STRONG

I think I'm in the same class as crash. You other guys make me feel bad for taking so long.

I always do a bunch at the same time so its hard to tell how long one takes. But everytime I always finish the board population and think "Oh man that was so fast. Why did I always take so long before?" and then I get to the wiring and get my answer. Another reason I take a long time is that I insist on being able to use a battery and never use anything bigger than a 125b so it can take a while to figure out how I'm going to cram everything in. And of course, that usually designing the decal so it fits with the layout. Then there's the painting which took me over a whole weekend to do 9 pedals (Now I learned to do it simultaneously so the enclosure is dry and ready by the time you finish your wiring. And I'm still trying to figure out how to put a more durable clear coat on them...

Oddly enough, I think the most time consuming and annoying part of building is jumping back and forth between mouser/smallbear/tayda ordering all the parts I need--and of course missing a couple

I know the zvex style is kind of out of the question now but any chance a ring mod is coming up in these wave of awesome designs you've been coming out with?

General Questions / Re: 1/4 jack, mono with 2 with nc
November 22, 2011, 06:43:54 PM
The only thing I can think of for that kind of switch is an optional output jack since the circuit is normally closed when the jack is empty and disconnected when a plug is inserted. It's basically the opposite of what you'd want for hooking up a battery

OK enough is enough. I'm getting very tired of telling you how great your pedals look......  ;)

Don't worry, no more builds for a while. Though I do have a Q-vibe waiting to be boxed and a piece of copper clad that I want to turn into a doombutter....

Are you using this pedal by itself or after another pedal. If you put it after a buffered pedal, it really tames the wild zombii. Just wanted to check before we get really in depth.

General Questions / Re: Tayda Pots - Knurled Vs Solid
November 18, 2011, 12:50:44 PM
I ordered all my pots from Tayda recently because their prices are so good. Your set screw knobs will work but there are a few issues with them. The set screw will tend to fall in the divot on the shaft so if you're completely anal about having your "all the way up" at 7 o clock instead of 7:05, it may not work for you. Also, I've found these shafts to be a bit taller than the smooth shafts I used to get from small bear so you can either live with the extra height on your knobs or i gues try to cut them down with a dremel or something. You can see the difference between my builds:

Knurled Shaft (Tayda)

Other than those, you'll be fine. You can always order knurled shaft knobs but I've been getting sick of them just for how hard they are to get off. Hopefully you only have to put them on once though

As a pharmacist, I am qualified to say that is just what the doctor ordered. I love it. Very creative!!

Haha thanks for the perscription. When I'm not building pedals, I'm a PhD student in neuroscience so this build let my nerdier side through a bit more than usual :)

Awesome finish and nice gutz. I may have to steal that idea one day.

I'm curious on the finish, after you sprayed the white, did you get any build up where the rubber band touches the enclosure (maybe too thick of a coat kind of thing) and if so, did you wet sand a little? If not, then cool. I guess the key would be not to spray too thick with the white.

I found that masking and respraying with rubber bands or masking tape would result in a definite difference in paint level but I decided not to try to sand it out of fear of messing up the whole thing. Just like how I tried not to white paint over any more green stripes than I had to. After I spent so much time laying the undercoat, masking, respraying, masking again, spraying, etc etc, I was much less likely to try to 'fix' anything since usually I end up worse off than when I started. I just forged ahead with the clear coat.

Dude all your finishes have been looking SICK!. They are looking awesome. Super clean builds too.
I have the Burst and am actually just now building another in the Black version. Hopefully I will get time to do a demo.

Thanks a lot! It's kind of sad that this was the last build I needed to finish. I've been living in a cloud of spray paint for the past week so I haven't even been able to play this thing more than a quick check to make sure the circuit worked. I'm gonna have to report back on a lot of these after I get some play time with them, probably make some demos too.

Build Reports / Neutrino (AKA Skyline)
November 17, 2011, 07:56:00 PM
For my neutrino, I decided to build the Black version since from what I read, it was a little brighter and cutting than the burst version (ironically named if you ask me). For the switch, I added the ability to switch between symmetrical (4 diodes) or asymmetrical (3 diodes) which seemed like one of the big differences between the black and burst versions.

Like my Egodriver, I decided to get a little crazy with the rubber bands. First, I tried to paint a bit of a red/black gradient. Then I masked the bands with some rubber bands. I really wanted to get some thicker bands but the closes I could do was just use multiple rubber bands which let a little white paint through when I put on that layer. I figure if I ever make other versions of the neutrino, I can use another city and paint the stripes a different color.

This is my last one of the batch I was finishing so I guess I'll have to get back to work on my Q-Vibe

Build Reports / EgoDriver (AKA SSRI)
November 17, 2011, 07:28:05 PM
This one's pretty nerdy but SSRI stands for Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor which is the drug that is usually used for treating OCD. This pedal was one of the reasons I started building. I really love how it can get crunchy but still maintain clarity between notes.

I got a little complicated with painting this one. First, I painted the whole thing green and used a bunch of rubber bands to mask it. Then I painted white over it to get all the green stripes.

Then I had to paint the parts that the decal was going to cover white so the designs will show up. I think I was a bit too conservative with this step since some of the elements still ended up on green, making it hard to read

Looks great!! I love my MB sabortooth as well.
One day I'll attempt to stick it in a 1590a w/ 9mm pots!
THAT would be awesome!

Another great looking pedal!! Your on fire.
Does your name crimtronix have anything to do with Crimson?

Thanks a lot! Nope much less meaningful than that. My last name is Crimi. I considered a play on "Criminal" but then it just sounded like my pedals were made by inmates...
