Build Reports / Re: Prickly Pear - fuzzy overdrive

'Nother Prickly Pear, with actual Texas dirt in the finish  :-\ ! The Yellow Shark is one of my first builds, back again with correct caps values and an OC44 Rangemaster in front. Can't say my offboard has gotten neater, I'm just not that guy I guess. Switchable input caps on the Rangemaster and a power inverter.

yeah I'll be interested to see if they can make it feel boutique but affordable.

"Available in a limited production run, each TB-2W features rare germanium transistors carefully tested for optimum tone, a three-way voltage selector, selectable true/buffered bypass operation, and a refined circuit design for ultra-consistent performance from pedal to pedal."

Kinda surprised they went with a power mode switch as a feature. I'm not familiar with running a TB at 12v.

Thanks David! The tone controls on the Silver Fox really work well with the StrangeMaster, super fun combo.

thanks guys! Bret608 you definitely should try boxing the Rangemaster with something. I liked the way it sounded by itself but I never run my amp loud enough for the Rangemaster to really work like it should with a cranked amp. I need to make another Rangemaster to pair with an old MB Honey Bee board I have since this combo worked so well together.

Looks awesome and sounds great too! I have an unboxed Rangemaster board that I now totally feel like using for something like this.

Build Reports / Prickly Pear - fuzzy overdrive

This started as an Effects Layouts Silver Fox board (BJFe Silver Bee) that I wanted a little more gain out of, and a Strange Master I never boxed up. I put the Strange Master in front of the Silver Fox and found out they sound pretty great together. I made a little demo vid since it's easier to just hear it than describe it, and I'm terrible at vids but hopefully you'll get the idea. Here's the Prickly Pear:

"For example, it's unlikely any coronavirus would survive as a stowaway on or inside packages mailed from China to the United States. "In general, because of the poor survivability of these coronaviruses on surfaces, that's in the range of hours, there's likely a very, very, very low if any risk of spread from products or packaging that is shipped over a period of days or weeks in ambient temperatures," Messonnier (of the CDC) says."

edit: quoted the wrong reply :-\
QuoteI feel horrible for asking this, but are you guys still ordering (or going to order) PCBs from Chinese fab houses, in light of all this?

It sounds pretty good, very smooth. I like these Vox Tonebender variants and this is a good one. I reduced the size of the output cap a little to reduce the low end a bit. It doesn't have quite as much gradual cleanup curve with the guitar volume as the Jack Deville version but there's still a good range of light distortion up to thick fuzz, it's just kind of bunched up at the end of the guitar volume pot rotation. Worth a build-up if you like Tonebenders.

It's just a regular waterslide decal, but I did get a new packet of Papilio decal paper, we have a better printer now, and I managed to line up the decal for a change. So, Harmonic Convergence?  :D

That labeling looks perfect.  How did you do it?

Hi Folks,
Here's an NPN Superbee I completed recently (except for forgetting I still need to glue in the LED). OC139s from the fine folks at Pedalhacker.

I'll have to check but I think it was both. Maybe I just need to try a plain vanilla Rangemaster and see how it works.

those look great! Did you have to do anything in particular to run the Rangemaster into the Fuzz Face? I have a ThroBak Strange Master I made that I want to run into a Ge Fuzz Face, it sounds great but also produces a really loud squeal with every Ge fuzz I've tried using it with.

So cool you made a complete set! What transistors did you use for the the MKI & 1.5?

I don't remember having trouble with the Bone Bender 1 (I used a J113), but I had problems with the BB2. Part of it was build errors but I kind of remember some squealing or something when I had the transistors inserted incorrectly. You knew the GT404s have an odd pinout, right? I didn't measure them so I don't know gains. Someone in the thread on tagboard mentioned getting oscillation until he did some trimmer adjustments. I don't think I changed any values on the BB1 but I'll have a look when I get the pedal from the office on Monday.

G.G., any build tips? I was revisiting them and I cant get rid of the oscillating squeal from the Bone Bender 1 unless I raise the filter caps so high that it sounds muddy.   Did you encounter anything like this? What gains did you use?  I built the one with a J113 in Q1.

For the Sparkle Face,  upgrading to high gain 2n1306's over the previous MP38A's I used was worth it.
