Build Reports / Re: BJF/Moodysounds Fuzzes!

You're right, I should just complete the set!

Nice builds!  I also made those using the Tagboard forum layouts.  Don't miss out on all the stuff that doesn't hit the main page..

I also used GT404's and built the "109 Face" to complete the set.   Those four fuzzes are Bjorn's reinterpretations of  Tone Benders mki mkii and silicon and germanium Fuzz Faces. They are excellent and sound great  with minimal adjusting.

Build Reports / BJF/Moodysounds Fuzzes!
April 28, 2019, 05:48:01 PM
Hi Folks,
Here are a few fuzzes from BJF/Moodysounds built from layouts over at tagboardeffects: the Sparkle Face, Bonebender, and Bonebender2. I put the Sparkle Face into the Ace of Spades box I already had, the Bonebender is in the hammertone box, and the Bonebender2 is the 1966 black-on-black. Both Bonebenders are using GT404s and really sound fantastic. They were super easy to bias, much easier than the Mark1 I made, in fact the hammertone Bonebender sounded great from the first so I never even tried to adjust the bias. Thanks to Bjorn and Moodysounds for putting these out for the DIY community, and to the lads at tagboard for the layouts. Definitely worth a build, all three.

I had never tried running a Rangemaster into a Tonebender, that's a pretty kick-ass old school sound!

Tooting my own Horn, 2019 edition!  8) I made some of the boss characters for Darksiders III and finally got around to making a couple renders.

Looks great! Do you have the schematic? I searched but came up empty handed.

How does this version sound compared to stock?

Maybe Storyboardist can chime in on how it's different than stock, the only info I have is the layout on his blog:

That is a great look.

I'm going to have to look up the circuit. Fuzz Faces have always struck me as a little meh.

With the fuzz and guitar volume all the way up it's got very squishy super smooth sustain.  I didn't realize how much range,  from boost, overdrive to pure fuzz you can get just by turning the guitar volume knob a little. I know that's old news since that how Fuzz Faces work, but it works great with my Tele. I didn't like it quite as much with the humbuckers on my Gretsch.

Build Reports / Black Beauty Fuzz Face

Hi Folks,
Here's a Fuzz Face variant I built up a while back from Storyboardist's Jack Deville (Mr. Black) Vintage 2-Knob Fuzz layout. I had tried a couple Fuzz Faces before but had never been that impressed, maybe I didn't understand how to use them, but this one sounded interesting so I gave it a try. It was ok, but it wasn't until I got it back out, put the right pot values in  ;D and tried out several different MP38A's that I found out I really like this circuit a whole lot. I was looking for something that would dirty up my super clean Fender amp, and it sounds great with my Tele. The enclosure is one of BLMS powercoats that I relic'd up with some steel wool and sandpaper, I thought it came out kinda cool looking.

good call on reflowing the solder joints, that seems to have fixed the issue. I think it was a dodgy solder joint on the DC jack, and a couple lugs on the stomp switch that looked kind of crusty.

thanks for the suggestions!

hi guys,
I built up a fuzz face recently with some MP38A's and I'm trying to track down some michrophonic behavior when the pedal is on. I first noticed it when I accidentally bumped the pedal with my foot and it made a really loud popping noise. So I started tapping around on it, the jacks, DC jack, stompswitch, enclosure, etc., thinking it might be a bad solder joint or something but wasn't able to isolate where the issue is. I can get the popping sound by tapping pretty much anything on the outside of the pedal. I suppose it could be a cold solder joint somewhere but was wondering if it's possible for transistors to be microphonic? Any ideas?

those are great! Pretty sure someone should jump on that Stargoon domain right away.

I used the perf layout I found over at Fuzz Central because it was a pretty compact layout. Sounded good but I don't have a real Bosstone to compare it with.  Not sure if it's 100% accurate since there are several versions, would probably be worth checking the layout against known schematics.

A Bosstone is pretty popular with steel players, and is a simple enough circuit to be 1590-able:

those are super cool! The industrial-looking unfinished ones look pretty nice too, have you done any that are left unfinished?

Cigars, gents! That sounds like a totally insane combo. Well done, the enclosure looks fantastic!

Beautiful collection!  My eyes were also drawn to the knobs on the Hype.  Very cool.
thanks guys! The Hype is using Contempo knobs from Small Bear. They're really similar to the knobs on my old Rat.
