Audio/Video Demos / Re: My Little Klony
July 13, 2022, 11:13:05 AM
Thanks everyone!
We've actually been doing these for quite a while using boards from a couple of DIY suppliers and finishing the enclosures with decals and clear coat.
This is finally our official V_1 standard build using our own boards and UV printed graphics. Exciting times for this little shop!

Audio/Video Demos / My Little Klony

Finally sent one of our "My Little Klony" overdrives out for a decent demo video. Pretty happy with the quality and it's definitely much better than anything I could have managed on my own at this point. I really need to do some trial and error with my video equipment  ;D

I probably wouldn't make it for every session but I'd definitely jump on from time to time.
There are a handful of Madbeaners who have helped me out over the years and a few that I have somewhat regular communication with outside of the forum.
I think it would be a great way to increase community engagement and support!

Might work out okay but doesn't the Lab Series arrangement end up with a +/- 15v supply?

I just checked  the doc on this and yes, that does seem to be the case. I didn't realize it uses a 9v AC adapter to get +/-25v and then regulates down to +/-15v. It seems like 18v supply into a 15v regulator plus an inverter would have been easier

Sorry Aion, not trying to go negative on you, just reporting my curiousity ;D

Current handling was the main issue. The L5 was on the edge of 100mA based on back-of-envelope estimation, and could very easily exceed it if someone experimented with newer opamps instead of 4558s in their build, so it wouldn't have been the right solution. But I do have a redesign of the L5 underway that uses the DC modules!

Awesome! Will it still have the same control layout/drill template?
Any chance there'll be future offerings of custom printed & drilled enclosures with the nice lab series badges?

Looks like a really nice layout! Where do you get your PCBs fabricated?

These were from JLC PCB. I've had pretty good luck with them so far.

Pretty much the same as the discontinued Fat Pants Jr.
I've added pads for connecting pins 1 & 8 on the charge pump to allow for using other ones than the standard LT1054CP. I also added pads for using either an SMT or through-hole JFET.
I built a few of the old Fat Pants Jr. boards in 1590B enclosures with this same graphic. This is the first in a 125B with top-mount jacks using my new boards.
It really is a great little boost!

Excellent knobbage!  Those from BLMS?

YUP!

It's such a complex circuit and there are any number of things that could throw it's performance out of whack....
Did you follow the calibration instructions as far as injecting a 1kHz signal at the appropriate voltage and setting the distortion trimmer first?
Also, make sure you have the master volume all the way up and the compression at about 2/3 before adjusting the compression trimmer.

That looks awesome! I've still got a bug in mine to fix.

Looks amazing. Where did you get the enclosure from??

I ordered it from Aion FX. He did a couple different limited runs of them a few years back. I'm not sure how long ago the last run was or if he might be doing any more.
They are pretty nicely done though. They were powder coated and printed from Pedal Parts Plus.

I bought two sets of boards for this project soon after it was released. Sat on them for quite a while and eventually jumped on the chance to buy two of the custom enclosures during one of the limited runs. And promptly kept sitting on them.
I was talking to a guy who was interested in one of them so I got started building. That was almost three years ago! I've had them nearly completed for a long time, they just slipped through the cracks.
Well I finally got around to finishing up the last little bit of wiring and went through the setup/calibration process. Everything works as expected and they really do sound great.
Here's the one I'll be keeping for myself!

I've only ever used spade terminals that are crimped wire connections, yours are way more complex, are they to be used with banana plugs like these ones?

Grabbed the part # from your link and found them on Digikey.
These will work perfectly!

That's amazing!
I know pretty much everyone here is happy that Smallbear has been kept alive for the community!
Can't wait to see the first completed build of the new layout here too.
I think I'll share the wealth a little bit........ Head over the the PIF tab of the buy, sell, trade section!
