Love the artwork! I bet it doesn't sound to shabby either.

I like the labels on your pedal board. Reminds me of this:

Yup, sounds real good. And the labels are pretty cool but I can't take credit for that. Not my board.
It belongs to John Baizley of Baroness.

WOW!
That's some amazing work right there.
As far as the clear coat, I know I had some issues starting out. I just tried a few different brands until I found one that worked well.
This is the stuff I've been having pretty good luck with recently:

Very nice!

Is that a vero Tenebrion?

Not a Tenebrion but it looks like it's probably a pretty similar circuit.
It's actually a culturejam Box-of-Hall built with the heavenwithin mods.

That looks fantastic.  Is that an etch?  And where did you get the knobs?

Not an etch. I was going to etch it but my toner transfers just weren't working out. Ended up doing a waterslide decal. Sanded the top smooth, couple thin layers of clear, decal, more clear.

The knobs came from a forum member here, flanagan0718
He scored a BUNCH of these knobs and sold some of them off in the "buy, sell, trade" section a few months back.
Wish I would have ordered more of them. I still have a hand full but it'll suck once I run out. Might have to see if I can ask him where he got them for future reference....

Haven't tried spray paint. This was from a small can and rolled on. It doesn't dry very hard so I was a bit worried. I got a few good thick coats of clear over top of it though. Didn't seem to give at all under the pressure of tightening all of the hardware.
I want to try the spray paint too just to see how it compares.

Build Reports / Aion Electronics Cerulean w/mods
August 23, 2016, 11:26:04 AM

Aion Electronics Cerulean overdrive (Bluesbreaker) built to JHS Morning Glory specs. Added Bright cut mod, high gain mod, external presence control.
Used a Two-Knob-Job board from Barry at GuitarPCB.com and implemented it in a unique way. I used it to have two gain pots (green and red) but I trimmed a little off of the edge of the board so I could stuff in a 4PDT stomp switch and use the extra pole for clipping diode selection along with changing the gain pot settings. Green setting uses four symmetrical 1N914 silicon diodes and the Red gain goes with a combo of germanium diodes (1N34A) and mosfets (2N7000)
Graphic is a waterslide decal over glow in the dark paint. Couldn't get a good picture of it in the dark but it turned out pretty great.
I'll have to update later with a gutshot. It's a bit messy due to all of the off-board wiring that was necessary for the layout.

Tremolo into reverb in one box. I'll have to update with a gut shot later. Built it on strip board, only one little moment of panic. Had a direct short to ground from the +9v. Found a tiny solder bridge and got it cleaned up and put back together.

I built this as a gift for John Baizley of Baroness after having a chance to meet the guys before a show back in May. I delivered it to him at their Detroit show on 8/20 and he put it on his board, in the reverb loop of his gig rig for the show that night!
Pretty cool for any DIY hobby builder to have a build end up on the board of a pro touring musician....
But, this was extra special kick ass for me. Baroness has been one of my absolute favorite bands for a few years now. I've had the good fortune to meet all of the guys and see a couple of great shows.
Super good guys and they put on one hell of a live show!

First time I'm trying to link pictures from Instagram, hopefully I've done it properly......

Guess I goofed the Instagram links....

Do-over from Photobucket.....

Cool to see this one finished up. I know you've had it in the works for a while. Even had room to stuff in the order selector switch. Awesome!
And no doubt it sounds amazing.
Out of curiosity, what order do you prefer? Rat first or the OD?

Does everything else seem to be the same? Board, layout, other components....
Maybe a board revision that changed a couple of components/values?
If everything looks the same then I'd have to guess it's all in component tolerances. Could be as much as 20% for some parts.
Building pedals one at a time, it's easy for me to test every component to make sure they're close to the specified value. Somewhat mass produced products though, probably not so much.

Open Discussion / Live Wire cables for cheap!
August 05, 2016, 08:51:18 AM
So I stopped by the Guitar Center in Saginaw, MI last week just to have a look around. I saw a sign for a sale on all Live Wire cables. 25% off if you buy 2, 35% off if you buy 3, 50% off if you buy 4 or more. The guy there said that the packaging was going to change and it's easier to blow em out than send em all back.
I was thinking about picking up another patch cable making kit. The price went up to $93 for the George L's! That's a lot of money for five cables.
I decided to pick up some Live Wires in different lengths. I won't have "exact" custom lengths but for the $$ who cares. I can tidy things up with cable ties.
So I was looking at Musicians Friend yesterday and they have the same deal going. (makes sense, same company) So I ordered some more.
All together I've ended up with about 30 patch cables varying from 6" to 3' that would have been over $300 all for about $150
I hate spending money on cables but I've never had bad luck with Live Wires and for half price, no brainer.

Open Discussion / Re: Runoffgroove Splitter-Blender

Got an email from Brian Tremblay at Runoffgroove with a link explaining it much better. The JFET is a buffer used to keep the green channel at the same 1 Meg input impedance as the red channel when using the phase inversion. Depending on what effect is feeding the input, it may not be necessary.
There's also an improved design in the post that just uses one op amp for the input buffer in the splitter. You can then use the other half for the buffer before the phase inversion if needed.
Pretty good stuff if anyone's interested....

Thanks for sharing.
Do you do your masking with toner transfer? (laser printer/glossy paper, what paper do you use?)
Also, how long do you let them etch? Do you do anything for agitation? What about temperature?
I don't mean to nag, I just really want to find a better method for clean etching. And yours sir are perfection!
#238
WOW! Awesome looking build!
Your etches are amazing. I've been getting some pretty decent results but still not quite on that level.
Any chance you could share a quick run-down on your process?
Prep, masking technique, etchant used, time/temp, etc....
Would be greatly appreciated!

I wondered about it being a buffer too but then why wouldn't the "red return" have the same thing going on.
Not enough hours in the day but, as soon as I have some time I'll try breadboarding it both ways to see if there's any advantage to using it.......

http://geofex.com/Article_Folders/polarity_reverser/polarity_reverser.htm

Here's the article that the link takes you to from the runoffgroove project document. No JFET section here.
I've seen similar phase inversion designs before. I'm going to look a little closer at both again to see if there's something I'm missing. Still looks like the JFET section is unnecessary to me.......
