On the new boards there are "OSC", "x2", and "x3" pads.  I'm back tracking thru Patreon docs but any idea what those are?

I bought a Standout from him a while back with a charge pump, looks like the charge pump is on another board hooked up right underneath to these pads.  So I assume these are only for split rail or charge pump additions to the board.

I love a great origin story.  Thanks for sharing, and thank you for all you do here.  Happy for you, and the way everything turned out.

Open Discussion / Re: Identifying a fuzz tone
March 04, 2018, 11:11:54 PM
Friend of mine showed me this Ray LaMontange album. It's a pretty great fuzz tone. I found some comment somewhere, believe it was Ray himself who made the comment, and he said it was a Marshall Supa Fuzz.

I actually built one with some Oc75s and yeah totally nails the tone. Rad sounding fuzz.

Open Discussion / Re: Custom Ear Plugs?
February 06, 2018, 05:46:09 PM
I have a set of Westone Tru earplugs. I'm using the 10 filters. They are awesome. It does take a bit to get used to, but so worth it. I play in 2 bands, one not so loud where I sometimes don't wear them, the other where I absolutely need them. I think I am going to upgrade the filters to a higher rating because I don't think the 10s are enough. For this group. The 10s are great though for going to live shows to see bands. My drummer I think has the 20s (not sure on the exact number as i think they changed their rating since I got them) and he thinks they are a bit too much. I used to play with a bassist that used a different brand. From what I understand the brand doesn't matter so much. It's more just to have them, and that they are in ear, so they are comfortable and protect your hearing. With the Westone you can easily change out the filters, so if you can afford it, get multiples and choose the best one for your situation.

Hope this helps, and good call on protecting your hearing. Wish I did this years ago.

External pot for Q - totally doable.  Generally you want a resistor in series with the pot because lower resistance might not give you a workable Q for a wah.

I'm not sure why you would put a pot in series with the main pot, I would think it would really mess up your sweep.

Check out Sabro Tone's wah schematic.

I heard R2 on that schematic can change the mids tone, haven't tried it yet myself.

Good luck!

Open Discussion / Re: Neck alignment on a guitar build
January 16, 2018, 12:24:17 PM
Agree with Frank, but also would ask about the alignment of the low e string. If there is no wiggle room there you might not want to do any mods to the guitar. Moving the bridge or shaving the neck could compromise the low e string. Can you get away with changing the string spacing on the nut? You wanna make sure the slots give enough space that the strings sit nicely with enough space to sit on the neck properly. Also did the nut come lose slip maybe down?  I'd also check the neck, did it warp? I'm not sure there is much you can do with a warped neck.

Awesome! Noticed there is no schematic in the Moodring doc. Is this intentional?

Hey Guys,

I've been playing around with Fetzer Valve style JFet gain stages
http://runoffgroove.com/fetzervalve.html

and was wondering if there is some sort of formula or pattern that could be used to convert this to an SRPP style gain stage.
http://www.geofex.com/Article_Folders/modmuamp/modmuamp.htm

The Fetzer is nice to control the gain with the source resistor on the JFet, but I was hoping to avoid having to use a trimmer to adjust the bias.  The SRPP style booster is nice because it self biases, but in my experimentation it seems to have much more gain and I would have to really play around with the source resistor and the capacitor between gate and source of the top JFet as it really changes the overall character of the tone either more bass or less depending on the cap.

I assume there is no direct sort of conversion and I'd probably have to rely on my ears to dial it in, but I was wondering if anyone has had any experience here and if there are any sort of patterns or design decisions that would help in the conversion.  Perhaps even it isn't even worth it and you need design your circuit with one or the other.

Appreciate any opinions any may have.

This is a great question. I've been wondering the same thing.

I was hesitant to add my affiliation because, it's new and may not pan out, and I didn't have any intent to sell anything on this forum.  I wanted to keep my side project separate from all the learning I get here.  But, at the same time, this site, the Madbean projects and documentation, and all you gurus here are the reason why I am where I am and I was afforded an opportunity to design, build, and sell some pedals.  It's way more fun than my day job.

I did suddenly realize that there were a few times that I suggested Nordstrand pickups to members here... I'm not at all affiliated with his pickups, I'm just really good friends with him and truly believe that his pickups the are bomb.  A real life fan boy.

Have you seen the following article from amzfx?
http://www.muzique.com/lab/pickups.htm using a transformer to simulate pickups between input and output buffers.

And here is a gut shot of the Earthquaker Devices Eruptor, which might be actually using this technique.

This is very impressive. I think the led needs to be powered by a carbon zinc battery for true vintage tone.
